Recap / The Lion Guard S1E1 "Never Judge a Hyena by Its Spots"

Go To

Summary: When Kion gets separated from the rest of the Lion Guard, he finds himself lost in the Outlands where he meets Jasiri, a friendly female hyena, who rescues him and helps face off against Janja and his clan.

This episode contains examples of:

  • An Aesop: It's pretty much right there in the title: Don't assume you know what someone is like before you get to know them.
  • Artistic Licence – Biology: You'd think Jasiri knew that spotted hyenas are excellent pack hunters, meaning lions kind of do have a good reason to chase them away, being rivals for food. Still, it's true that hyenas will clean up completely every part of their meal, right down to eating the hide and the bones (spotted hyenas have incredibly powerful jaws and very strong stomach acid). Also, while most hyenas are active hunters, in some areas of Africa, they do, in fact, prefer to scavenge for food.
    • Jasiri can take on most of Janja's clan but he pins her with ease. You could argue that Janja is incredibly strong for a male, but even so in real life, all Jasiri would need to do is glare and he'd start fawning just to catch some tail.
    • Jasiri is also smaller than any of the male hyenas (in real life, female spotted hyenas are generally bigger than males), though this may be due to her still being a juvenile (she's about the same size as Kion, whereas a full-grown Shenzi easily dwarfed a cub Simba).
  • Bilingual Bonus: "Sisi ni sawa" actually means "We're the same" in Swahili.
  • Blatant Lies: After being surprised by Jasiri during their first encounter, Kion awkwardly claims that he knew she was watching him all along.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: The scene where the male hyenas first attack Jasiri — you have a group of thuggish males with greedy, hungry looks on their faces surrounding a young lone female. Before they jump her, one of them shouts, "Me first!" The position Janja pins her in at one point does nothing to make the scene look less suggestive of.. something other than roughing her up or eating her.
  • Fantastic Racism: Kion is under the assumption that all hyenas are evil, and neither understand nor respect the Circle of Life. Jasiri is quick to call him out on this.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Kion and Jasiri, and by extension Jasiri with the rest of the Lion Guard.
  • First-Name Ultimatum: Bunga ends up on the receiving end of one of these from the rest of the Lion Guard.
  • Good Colors, Evil Colors: A way to tell Jasiri is not mean like Janja's clan is by her fur color; she is tinted a faint purple, while Janja and the other hyenas are a sickly grey. Jasiri also has Innocent Blue Eyes, unlike the other hyenas' black and yellow eyes.
  • A Handful for an Eye: Jasiri kicks some dust into several hyenas' faces.
  • He's a Friend: Kion keeps Jasiri and the rest of the Lion Guard from fighting when they meet.
  • Incredibly Long Note: Kion hits one during the song, drawing out the word "spots" at the end of the bridge.
  • Ink-Suit Actor: Jasiri's facial features resemble her voice actor, Maia Mitchell.
  • I Resemble That Remark!: Kion protests Jasiri's assertion that to be male is to be foolish—while he is trapped in a thorn bush after having failed to heed Jasiri's warnings about it. She points this out.
  • Kick Chick: Jasiri attacks mostly with her legs while battling Janja's clan.
  • Meaningful Name: Jasiri's name means "brave" in Swahili.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Kion and Jasiri sing about this, though Kion is rather skeptical at first.
Jasiri: Sisi ni sawa, we are the same!
  • Title Drop: Kion gives an approximate one during his duet with Jasiri.
  • Twitchy Eye: Fuli develops one of these when Beshte forgets to ask a rhino directions to Flat Ridge Rock, instead spending several minutes conversing with the rhino about mud baths.
  • Use Your Head: When Janja's clan attacks Jasiri, she headbutts one in the midsection just as he leaps at her. When Kion joins the fight, he slams his head against a hyena's. The hyena is knocked out, but Kion is only slightly dazed.
  • Visual Pun: In the song, whenever Kion and Jasiri mention "At the end of the day, it's like water and rain", they are next to a water puddle.
  • Vocal Dissonance: Kion's voice while singing is much more adultlike and sounds somewhat Jamaican in this episode.
  • What Measure Is a Non-Cute?: Jasiri, though the artists did their best to make her look cute.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Jasiri's message to Kion during their Friendship Song.

Sisi Ni Sawa (We're the Same)

In "Never Judge a Hyena By Its Spots," Kion tries to lecture the hyena Jasiri about the Circle of Life. Jasiri, however, reveals that she actually already knows all about the Circle of Life. Not all hyenas are slobbering, mangy, stupid poachers, nor are they all like Janja and his clan that Kion is having issues with in this episode. The two have a song number in which Jasiri teaches Kion that she's really a lot more like him than he thinks.
