Molly has to train a goat for her agriculture club's training demonstration at the county fair.

Tropes:

  • An Aesop: Giving kids whatever they want is no way to be a parent; moderation and discipline are ultimately better for them.
  • All for Nothing: After all the trouble Scratch went through to get a pile of food fried by Turkey Tina, Totes eats the whole thing before he could even taste it.
  • Arc Words: "Command, Click, Reward."
  • Behavioral Conditioning: Scratch plans to use Mr. Bates' clicker to condition Pete to be his proxy at the county fair.
Pete: That’s weird. Why do I suddenly crave a cracker?
  • Bittersweet Ending: Molly's lack of discipline towards Totes gets the McGees (sans Darryl and Grandma Nin) a lifetime ban from the fair, while Scratch's attempts at getting fried food crashes and burns. Nevertheless, Molly has learned how to be more assertive and makes up for her failure by having Totes work at the park by trimming grass like a lawnmower, enabling Totes to lose all the gained weight.
  • Call a Human a "Meatbag": Scratch calls Molly and Libby “meatsacks” when trying to get them to let him use their bodies to bring food to the deep frying booth.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Molly is instantly enamored with Totes the goat’s cuteness and remains so much so that she can’t bring herself to train him properly.
  • Dagwood Sandwich: Scratch gives Pete a ten-foot-high pile of food to deep-fry at Turkey Tina's booth.
  • Deep-Fried Whatever: Scratch becomes obsessed with a booth at the county fair that will deep fry anything.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: The leader of the 3A Club runs the program like a boot camp.
  • Everything Makes a Mushroom: Scratch's enormous culinary concoction going into the deep fryer at Turkey Tina's produces a mushroom cloud of fryer oil.
  • Extreme Omni-Goat: Downplayed, but Totes gets so used to getting food whenever he wants, he chews on the McGee's front porch and attacks Scratch's deep-fried food tower right in the middle of the training demonstration.
  • Fictional Counterpart: Molly is a member of Brighton's local 3A ("Animals, Agriculture, and America") club, a nod to the American 4H clubs.
  • Guilt by Association Gag: Sharon gets banned from the county fair along with Molly, Pete, and Totes, despite not doing anything to warrant it.
  • Hand Gagging: Scratch slaps his hand over Molly’s mouth to stop her from gushing over Totes the Goat while Mr. Bates is talking.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: Scratch turns into an inconsolable mess after Totes eats his tower of fried food before he could even taste any.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Scratch was actually right when he told Molly that she's training Totes to be bribed with treats.
  • Literal Metaphor: Mr. Bates warns the girls that without proper training, the goats will "walk all over you". This is shown to be quite literal in Libby's case.
  • Persona Non Grata: Molly’s poor handling of Totes gets her and her family (except Darryl and Grandma Nin) banned from the county fair for life.
  • Plumber's Crack: As Scratch is admiring the sights of the county fair, he accidentally looks right at a man’s exposed butt crack.
  • Pun-Based Title: The episode’s title is a play on the phrase, “Go your own way”.
  • Puppy-Dog Eyes: Every time Molly tries to discipline him, Totes gives her puppy eyes, and she instantly caves in. Sharon remembers that Molly used to do the same thing as a baby. Mr. Bates warns everyone to not let the puppy eyes fool them.
  • Serious Business: As head of the 3A Club, Mr. Bates takes his job very seriously. He even tells the girls that raising goats is "serious business."
  • Temporary Bulk Change: Totes the goat becomes quite fat from Molly spoiling him. He manages to lose the weight after Molly gets him a job trimming the grass at the town park.
  • Training Montage: The song “G-O-A-T” plays while Scratch successfully trains Pete and Molly unsuccessfully trains Totes.
  • Training the Pet: While not a traditional pet, Molly is tasked with training a goat so it can enter a competition for her 3A Club.
