Recap / The Flash 2014 S 7 E 1 Alls Wells That Ends Wells

Go To

The season 7 premiere of The Flash.

Tropes:

  • All for Nothing: All those years, Eva has been desperate to escape the mirror world and get back the life stolen from her...only to discover she doesn't have one as the real Eva was killed and she's been a mirror duplicate all this time.
  • Arc Words: "Run, Barry, run," pops up again as Harry's last words to Barry.
  • Back for the Dead:
    • In a manner of speaking - as Nash is charging the artificial Speed Force, he hands control of his body over to H.R. Wells, Sherloque and Harry so they can each have a moment to say goodbye to Barry.
    • Sam Scudder, the original Mirror Master, returns only to be swiftly killed by Eva, his successor.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Rosa Dillon plays the wounded girl who just lost her lover, who was always second-fiddle to his plans....until she reveals that she was actually the brains behind their two-men operations and sold Sam out to Eva, throwing Cecile off-balance with her powers by exploiting her fear in the process.
  • Broken Pedestal: Nash for Allegra, when she finds out that he risked Barry's life because he was too afraid to sacrifice his own. After his Heroic Sacrifice, she changes her mind.
  • The Bus Came Back: Rosa Dillon, a.k.a. The Top returns for the first time since all the way back in Season 3.
  • Call-Back: In addition to Harry, H.R., and Sherloque, Barry briefly takes on the mannerisms of Wells the Grey, a wizard version of Wells who showed up as a quick gag back when the Council of Wells were introduced.
  • Continuity Nod: Barry and Iris are shown finishing a "takeout world tour", with a Big Belly Burger bag and a bag reading "I (Heart) Gotham"; Barry notes in dialogue the Kansas State Fair funnel cake was Clark's recommendation.
  • Dead All Along: The real Eva was killed in the original experiment and the Eva we've been focused on was a mirror duplicate all along.
  • Dramatic Shattering: Eva smash the picture frame of her and Carver happy together, after being reminded of Carver saying that she's not really Eva.
Eva: You don't control me anymore.
  • Fake Shemp: Sam Scudder only appears on screen for a second before being shattered like a mirror.
  • Hannibal Lecture: Rosa towards Cecile during their first dialogue. Cecile turns it right back to her during the second time, though.
  • He's Back!: With the artificial Speed Force running, Barry has his powers back.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Nash gives his life to power the artificial Speed Force.
  • It's All My Fault: Allegra immediately blames herself when the collective minds of the Wellses end up in Barry, though Nash quickly shoulders the blame himself.
  • Mind Rape:
    • Eva messes with Iris by presenting her with visions of herself mocking her over her situation.
    • It’s revealed that Top's vertigo effect is just one of many of her powers, and she is perfectly capable of psychic torture herself. Cecile shows her that two can play at that game, though.
  • Mood Whiplash: Barry bouncing between the different Wells personas goes from humorous to dangerous when it turns out that his mind can't handle it and will shut down if it's not fixed before his speed is used up and he loses his Healing Factor.
  • Mythology Gag: Chester reads a book called Quantum Gravity & The Universe by Dr. Meena Dhawan. In the comics, Meena Dhawan is a speedster by the moniker of "Fast Track".
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Nash accidentally causes all the other Wellses to Body Surf into Barry, which puts him in mortal danger as soon as his remaining speed runs out.
  • No Body Left Behind: Nash's body completely disintegrates after his Heroic Sacrifice.
  • No Historical Figures Were Harmed: Harrison Orson Wells, who is a thinly veiled copy of...well, Orson Welles.
  • "No More Holding Back" Speech: When Cecile talks to Rosa about her past fears, the latter initially reacts mockingly, thinking that she is trying to appeal to her inner goodness. Cecile however was just channeling her fear to project it into Rosa, forcing her to be truthful with her.
  • "Not So Different" Remark:
    • Eva tries to argue she's on the same side as the Flash as they both want Blackhole gone, but Barry simply retorts that if Eva was telling the truth then she would’ve already let Iris out of the Mirror World.
    • Played straight when Harry explains to Nash that all the other Wellses were just as broken as he once.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: It turns out Rosa's entire ditzy act is just that, she's a twisted manipulator whose powers can warp emotions and using Sam as a cover before selling him out to Eva.
Cecile: Scudder's ditzy girlfriend...It was all an act.
Rosa: I was always the brains. Sam was just the pretty face.
  • Once More, with Clarity: Eva remembers her last encounter with her husband who groans on how "my wife died" and "you're not even human." As it turns out, this wasn't a That Man Is Dead moment; he was trying to tell her that the real Eva died and she's just another mirror duplicate.
  • The Purge: Eva has been busy destroying every remnant of Black Hole.
  • Put on a Bus: Ralph and Sue are stated to be "way off" the grid in light of Eva framing Sue for Carver’s murder; this is due to Hartley Sawyer being fired from the series last year.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Eva, masquerading as a part of Iris's consciousness, gives her one, calling her weak.
  • Reduced to Dust: Nash, upon his sacrifice, is disintegrated.
  • The Reveal:
    • The Sam Scudder we met back in Season 3 was actually a mirror clone of him. The first one ever created by Eva.
    • While Barry’s suit is held within the Flash Ring, it’s revealed that the cowl is instead generated separately by (what appears to be) the same nanotechnology that generates Supergirl’s second costume.
    • Eva was killed in the original experiment and this entire time, we've been watching a mirror duplicate.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Eva's willing to let millions of people die (via detonating a supersonic jet containing Black Hole's tech over the city) just to get back at her husband's organization.
  • Shout-Out: Chester, geeking out upon meeting Wells the Grey, excitedly asks him if he knows Gandalf.
  • Spotting the Thread: Iris quickly deduces that the hallucinations she's having are actually Eva screwing with her.
  • Superman Stays Out of Gotham: As usual. The heroes fret that they have only three minutes before the plane will explode above Central City. No one even thinks of calling in Wally, or J'onn, or Clark, or Kara - this is somewhat justified, as Wally is in the same boat as Barry thanks to the death of the Speed Force, whilst the opening episode of Supergirl (2015)note  was originally scheduled to air prior to this episode before production came to a halt due to COVID-19.
  • Survivor's Guilt: Nash feels horrible for being the only Wells left alive.
  • Tomato in the Mirror:
    • After killing him, Eva callously tells Rosa Dillon that Sam Scudder was just a mirror duplicate and not the real Sam.
    • In the final moments of the episode, Eva sees footage of the night of the particle accelerator explosion, and realises that she's just a mirror duplicate - the real Eva never entered the Mirror World, and instead died upon hitting the mirror.
  • Wham Episode: Nash and all the other Wellses are gone, Barry has his speed back, and Eva discovers that the real Eva died the night of the Particle Accelerator explosion and she was actually a mirror duplicate.
  • Wham Line:
    Eva: I died...Everything I thought was a lie. I'm the mirror duplicate.
  • Wham Shot: Eva watching the video of her accident...only now seeing her own body dead and the realization she's a Reflection of the real Eva.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Due to Barry still running on 1% of his speed, Eva makes short work of him at the beginning of the episode.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: When Nash thinks that he's not a good man like the other versions of himself, Harry reassures him that they were all just as broken as he when they first met Barry, and they became better.
