Recap / Supergirl (2015) S6E1 "Rebirth"

Go To

Having absorbed the powers of Leviathan, Lex enters the next phase of his plan: taking over the entire world.

Tropes:

  • All Your Powers Combined: Lex gains the combined powers of Leviathan save Gamemnae, the only one Brainy didn't manage to shrink into his capsule.
  • Anguished Declaration of Love: Brainy tries to explain himself and tells Nia he loves her when he's stuck on the other side of the glass in an irradiated room, fully expecting to die.
  • The Atoner: With her company gone, Andrea admits she was wrong transforming CatCo into a "clickbait media farm" and wants them to get back to hard-hitting, actual journalism.
  • Beyond the Impossible: Nia pushes herself so far at the beginning of the episode that she is actually able to use her Astral Projection to physically interact with the door panel to save Brainy.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Lex is depowered, arrested, and has his knowledge of Supergirl's identity erased, but before all that can happen he succeeds in trapping Supergirl in the Phantom Zone.
  • Broken Pedestal: Thanks to Eve's testimony against him, Lex becomes this to the rest of the world with all his misdeeds aired to the public. By the end of the episode, he is back in prison again.
  • The Bus Came Back: Otis Graves is Back from the Dead in this new universe.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Alex's Morph Weapon, the "Hand of the soldier", ends up saving the day twice, first against Gamemnae, then against Lex.
  • Could Say It, But...: After Lex is arrested, Lillian tells him, "I want it on the record that I'm resisting the urge to say, 'I told you your obsession with the Kryptonian would end like this.'"
  • Demoted to Extra: Eve is back to being a guest character. For some reason, she isn't classified as a Special Guest like other downgraded regulars.
  • Disney Death: Lex kills Supergirl through kryptonite poisoning, but Lena set up a protocol beforehand to revive her with concentrated yellow sunlight as soon as the satellites are destroyed.
  • Double-Meaning Title: There are a number of rebirths in this episode:
    • Kara, resurrected from death by Kryptonite poisoning.
    • Catco, with Andrea deciding to return it to real journalism instead of clickbait articles.
    • Lena, showing that she truly regrets her turn to evil and returns to the light and fully accepted into the Superfriends.
    • Brainy and Nia starting afresh.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Lillian is clearly taken aback a bit when Lex reveals his plans, but only objects when he says that he also plans to kill Lena. She has to actually threaten him to agree to spare his sister—and Lex has been rendered an immortal being with actual powers, and he reluctantly goes along with it.
  • Homoerotic Subtext: Several of Kara and Lena's scenes have romantic undertones, including the scene were they refuse to say goodbye prior to Kara's suicide mission.
  • Hypocrite: Kara pulls this card on Lex, pointing out how he, who always hated Superman and herself for being aliens who decide humanity's fate, now has alien DNA running through his veins as well. Naturally, Lex twists it around and nearly kills Kara.
  • It's All My Fault: Brainy naturally blames himself for allowing Lex to become so powerful, but Lena is quick to disavow him of the notion, claiming that she is the most responsible.
  • Jerkass Realization: Brainy realizes his mistakes in hurting Nia to protect her.
  • Killed Off for Real: Gamemnae is killed after Kara uploads the Anti-Life Equation into her mainframe.
  • Kryptonite Factor: Jarhanpurium in Lex's case, which is made from the Jarhanpurians' destroyed homeworld.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: At the end of the episode, Lena uses Myriad to erase Lex and Lillian's memories of Supergirl's secret identity, as well as anyone else's who worked with them and knew.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After Bernando essentially throws his daughter to the wolves despite her loyalty to him all these years, Andrea accesses his computer and has him buy up all the shares of Obsidian, shortly before the company goes bankrupt.
  • Locked Out of the Loop:
    • This episode confirms that Kelly does not know Kara is Supergirl.
    • William is fed a story that Kara is working for Cat Grant to cover her absence.
  • Mental Fusion: J'onn and M'gann join forces in a Martian ritual known as binding to stop all of Lex’s satellites that are orbiting Earth at the exact same time.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Rebirth is a recurring Arc Words in the DC Universe. Recently, it is also the title of a 2016 reboot that saw aspects of the TV show incorporated into comic Kara's story such as being adopted by the Danvers and working for the DEO.
    • Brainiac-5 accesses the Anti-Life Equation to end Leviathan once and for all. Said equation is the ultimate goal of Darkseid himself. Additionally, Brainy is able to activate the Equation easily. In Justice League, Lex Luthor was told that the only people who could solve such an equation had to be twelfth-level intellects, of which Brainy is included.
    • Alex's new codename, Sentinel, in the comics was used by the golden age Green Lantern Alan Scott in the 1990s.
  • Negated Moment of Awesome: Initially, as Nia's attempt to fire the Jarhanpurium on Lex misfires.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Kara tells Lex that by taking alien DNA into himself and trying to guide Earth on what he believes to be the right path, he's become a lot like the Kryptonians he despises. Lex is still able to spin this to his own twisted notion that he's still the planet's savior.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: Lex plans on doing what the Anti-Monitor couldn't do, destroy all life on Earth and beyond, with only for his brainwashed followers remaining.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: Despite stating that Lena shooting him is "water under the bridge", Lex brought it up again after she sided against him.
  • Out-Gambitted: Lex gets outplayed by Kara and her friends in the end, because for all his intelligence, he is predictable.
  • Out of Focus: William only appears in two scenes.
  • Real Life Writes the Plot: Kara is sent to the Phantom Zone and is staying there for most of the first 7 episodes to cover Melissa Benoist's maternity leave. She filmed all her scenes for the Phantom Zone when she returned to filming in January 2021. These were edited into episodes 2 to 4, which were filmed in Autumn 2020 with the rest of the cast.
  • Season Finale: Technically, as this episode was originally intended to be the Season 5 finale before the COVID-19 pandemic halted production on the series.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: While Lex is threatening to reveal Supergirl's identity and implying that something may happen to Kelly if he doesn't go free, Lena punches him across the face. Alex approves.
Lena: Sorry, did you want to do that?
    Alex: No, family first.
  • Taking Up the Mantle: Alex takes up the moniker of "Sentinel", which was used by one of J'onn's comrades in arms, N'orr Cott.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Bernardo blames his daughter Andrea for the loss of his company, despite her sacrificing everything for him (both Pre-Crisis and Post-Crisis). For that, she sold all her stocks to him, so he would deal with the financial problems alone.
  • Video Wills: Kara uploads one to the Fortress's computer, in case Lex kills her.
  • Villain Song: After having seemingly killed Kara, Lex does a rendition of "We are the Champions" from News of the World (Queen). J'onn interrupts him before he can finish it.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?:
    • We never learn who the true head of Leviathan is. Or if they're still a threat.
    • The contents of the video about Lex and Lena that Mxy left for Kara in the 100th episode is never addressed.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Kelly encourages Andrea, who is heartbroken after her father blames her for the company's failure.
