Go To

Grandparent Trap: Ronnie Anne gets worried that Hector and Rosa's marriage is in trouble after watching a relationship talk show.

Miss Step: Ronnie Anne learns the art of baile folklorico - and that her Tia Frida is one intense instructor!

"Grandparent Trap" provides examples of:

  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: According to Camila's talk show, one of the warning signs that a romantic relationship is in trouble is excessive bickering—right after hearing this, Ronnie Anne notices Hector and Rosa bickering and is worried that their marriage is on the rocks. In the end, Hector and Rosa explain to Ronnie Anne that even if they do tend to argue a lot, they do it more as a way of blowing off steam and it doesn't mean they don't love each other anymore.
  • Blaming the Tools: Hector denies having gained weight, claiming his shorts shrunk instead.
  • Blatant Lies: Hector claims that he doesn't hide snacks in his shoes, only for Rosa to take off his shoe and reveal an assortment of junk food.
  • Crying a River: Tia Frida's Ocular Gushers are taken up to eleven here. While watching Camila, she cries so hard she floods her apartment with her tears. At one point, the apartment is half-flooded and Lalo swims in the tears with Carlitos riding on his back, and at the end of the episode, the apartment is completely flooded and Frida, Lalo, and Carlitos are all dressed in scuba suits.
  • Gross-Up Close-Up: During Hector and Rosa's romantic dinner, which Ronnie Anne, Carlota, and CJ have set up, we get a good look at Rosa's aged face.
  • Hammerspace: Apparently, Hector keeps an assortment of snacks in his shoes.
  • I Resemble That Remark!: On the TV show Camila, Camila says that Rosa is too controlling, after which Rosa tells Hector to get up off his chair.
  • Moment Killer: Just as Hector and Rosa are about to do a toast to their relationship, Carl interrupts by dressing up like a ninja.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The episode's title is based on the 1961 Disney movie The Parent Trap.
  • Senior Sleep-Cycle: Ronnie Anne mistakes Hector's habit of sleeping on the couch for a sign that his and Rosa's relationship is doomed—Rosa later says that Hector likes sleeping on the couch, which Hector confirms is true and claims that the reason behind it is because the couch is closer to the kitchen.

"Miss Step" provides examples of:

  • Brits Love Tea: One of Ronnie Anne's training exercises involves trying to carry a tea tray in a fast-moving train without spilling a drop of the tea. Naturally, an English tourist in the train accepts a cup full of the tea.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: Frida acts like this while training Ronnie Anne to build up her strength and balance for baile folklorico.
  • Extremely Protective Child: Upon hearing his mother cry, Carl threatens to beat up whoever made his mother cry.
  • Injured Limb Episode: Subverted. At the beginning of the episode, Carlota seems to sprain her elbow, leading Ronnie Anne to take her place. Later on, it turns out that Carlota faked her injury to get out of baile folklorico training. Then Ronnie Anne fakes an injured foot for the same reason. Finally, Maria herself pretends to have broken her leg.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Upon thinking that Maria has broken her leg for real, Ronnie Anne and Carlota feel guilty for killing the Casagrande's baile folklorico tradition and confess to having faked their own injuries. Frida also apologizes for being too strict of a trainer. Maria later reveals she was also faking at the end of the episode just as the showcase starts.
  • Obfuscating Disability / Playing Sick: Not only does Carlota pretend to sprain her elbow, but she convinces Ronnie Anne to pretend to fracture her foot and Maria herself pretends break her leg, all of them to get out of Frida's intense baile folklorico training.
  • Ocular Gushers: Frida does this multiple times, most notably after she is convinced that every female in her family won't be able to dance.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Invoked by Frida, who tells Ronnie Anne that all dancers of baile folklorico must "maintain the joy" at all costs.
