Mr. Brittas: We have the odd trouble maker, Horatio, just like anyone else. But you can't judge a place by a couple of headlines in the national press.
Gordon Brittas telling his brother Horatio about some of the leisure centre's past incidents.

  • Date First Aired: 28/01/1993

It's the anniversary of the centre's opening today, and Brittas has created some events to mark the occasion. However, Brittas' plans for a swimming gala are hindered when Colin reveals that they're out of oil. The culprit for this is a leak in the oil tank, created due to rust generated from the piss of pubgoers. Brittas promptly gets Colin to collect what's left and store them.

Meanwhile, a group of people from Guildford have come to the centre who are so keen on using the centre facilities, they've even come prepared for Brittas' usual bureaucratic measures. Also at the centre is Horatio, Brittas' twin brother. Horatio has been at the Brittas' family household for a little while, and Helen has been struggling thanks to being told to cut down on her usual anti-depressants. However, Horatio is planning on leaving for Lebanon, and Helen is glad to see him go.

Unfortunately, Colin's attempt to collect the oil are complicated when Brittas' order of oil comes in, forcing him to store it in the weights room. Additionally, Horatio is having a Crisis of Faith - he's realized that maybe the Dream that both he and Brittas pursue is not good, that he is simply a pain in everyone's ass, and that ergo, he's not going to Lebanon. The staff have also figured out the purpose of the group from Guildford - it turns out that they're from the local leisure centre there and they're on a staff outing. They're also there to play a game called "I Spy Brittas", where participants get points for getting Brittas to do one of his quirks.

Brittas eventually finds out that Colin is storing oil in the weights room. Although there is nothing he can do at the moment, he decides to store a stash of fireworks that Julie has brought into his office. Unfortunately, an incident involving sunlight, Horatio's glasses, and the fireworks leads one to go astray and hit the oil stash in the centre, causing a fiery explosion. On the positive side, at least, the Guildford staff enjoyed their time there. As such, when Horatio talks to them and hears their pleas not to let Brittas abandon his dream, he is convinced not to abandon his Dream after all and heads off to Lebanon after all.

Tropes in this episode:

  • Acquired Error at the Printer: The badges which are supposed to read "I've been to Whitbury Leisure Centre & swum in the pool" instead read "I've been to Whitbury Leisure Centre & swum in the poo". In a variation, the l is still there, but it's positioned in a way that it's not clearly visible.
Mr. Brittas: It says "pool". The l's got pushed 'round the corner a bit, that's all.
Julie: Well, it definitely says "poo" on mine.
  • Alliterative Name: A company called "Whitbury Wielders" comes to fix the problem with the leading tank.
  • Arrow Cam: After Brittas accidentally sets off one of the fireworks, the camera briefly shifts to the POV of the firework as it launches into the gallons of oil that were being stored away.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Laura lets out a big "What!" upon learning from Brittas that a lot of oil is being stored in the building.
  • Continuity Nod: Horatio mentions that assassination attempts have been made against Brittas before, something seen in "Assassin" and "That Creeping Feeling".
  • Copycat Mockery: Laura briefly adopts Brittas' accent when she's discussing the "I Spy Brittas" game with the rest of the staff (specifically the part involving getting Brittas to say "Don't worry, I'm dealing with it").
  • Crisis of Faith: Horatio is suffering from a crisis of faith during the episode, believing (rightly) that his attempts to follow the Dream is just leading to tears and violence. He snaps out of it by the end of the episode when he is told by the group who went to the leisure centre about how they enjoyed Brittas' presence there and how they don't want Brittas to abandon his Dream.
  • Drinking Game: Whilst not alcoholic, the "I Spy Brittas" game effectively functions as one of these otherwise, with participants getting points for getting Brittas to do one of his quirks.
  • Fatal Fireworks: Brittas brings up a box of fireworks to his office, where one of them goes astray and collides with the oil being stored in the weights room. This leads to a fiery explosion and tons of injuries.
  • Guns in Church: Apparently, someone shot at Horatio in his church just as he was about to announce the next hymn.
  • Heroic BSoD: Horatio considers giving up his faith in this episode after a series of unfortunate experiences as a priest.
  • It Runs in the Family: Brittas' brother Horatio is quite similar, having a dream of uniting the world whilst causing more problems than solutions.
  • Milking the Giant Cow: Brittas' many hand gestures give out bonus points in "I Spy Brittas".
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Brittas makes Colin and Linda store oil in the weights room, which leads to the destruction of the centre.
  • No Medication for Me: Helen has been forced to cut down on her anti-depressants in light of her pregnancy. She’s not pleased, especially since she’s been forced to deal with both Brittas and Horatio.
  • Obnoxious In-Laws: Helen is greatly annoyed by her husband's brother staying at theirs for a while and is horrified when Horatio begins to have doubts about his Dream, seeing as it would mean that he wouldn't be leaving their household.
  • One Drink Will Kill the Baby: A variant involving anti-depressants; Helen has been forced to cut down on her intake of anti-depressants whilst she's pregnant with her twins so that they're not negatively harmed by it.
  • One-Shot Character: Mike, Steve and Wendy.
  • The Reveal: We find out in further detail exactly what Brittas' Dream is.
  • Series Goal: This episode reveals that Brittas' goal in life is to unite the world through sports.
  • Sibling Team: It’s revealed that twin brothers Brittas and Horatio have the same Dream, and that they decided when they were children to work together to achieve it - Horatio is focusing on the spiritual side, whilst Brittas is working on the physical side.
  • Solar-Powered Magnifying Glass: In a variant, Brittas puts his brother's glasses on top of a sheet of paper near a box of fireworks. The sunlight is reflected through the glasses and ends up lighting the box of fireworks beside it.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: At the end of the episode, one of the fireworks lights up and collides with the gallons of oil being stored in the building, leading to an explosion and fire.
  • Titled After the Song: The episode title is a reference to the song "Two Little Boys".
  • Unseen No More: Horatio has been mentioned a couple of times since "Mums and Dads", but this is the first time he has actually appeared on-screen.
  • Urine Trouble: The cause of the leak from the tank? Drunken pubgoers pissing on it.
  • What Could Possibly Go Wrong?: Brittas, trying to resolve the issue of oil being stored in the weights room, asks "What can happen in a couple of hours?". Cue everyone deciding to take the opportunity to take stuff up there which would have a negative reaction with the oil, with Carole taking a fire-eater, Gavin and Tim a lit birthday cake, and Julie a box of fireworks.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: The steps towards the Dream are revealed to be an example of the two Brittas brothers' idealistic nature, with such points as the setting up of a World Government, and the abolition of war.
