Recap / Static Shock S 3 E 12 Toys In The Hood

Go To

Virgil attends a class trip with the new teacher, Ms. Moore, in charge. A giant monkey robot stops the bus, however, and Static finds he's out of his depth. Fortunately, a familiar red and blue figure comes out of the sky, revealing he's tracking down the villain Toyman. Meanwhile, Ms. Moore isn't what she seems, and takes interest in Daisy.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Achievements in Ignorance: Toyman had no idea that Static existed (and is in no hurry to learn his name once made aware), but the fact his soldiers are made of plastic makes them a formidable foe for an electrokinetic superhero.
  • Apologetic Attacker: Toyman is sniffling beneath his mask as he kills Darci. He didn't want to do it, but the other choice was die in a massive explosion.
  • Bait-and-Switch: It seems at first that Toyman is after Darci again, to make her his. It turns out they've done a Villain Team-Up so she can kidnap, replace and impersonate a high school student.
  • Betrayal Insurance: Toyman installed a failsafe in Darci's new body that melts her, and he throws away the antidote.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Static and Superman save Daisy from Toyman and Darci's schemes. Toyman realizes, however, that Darci doesn't love him and she's too dangerous to keep alive, so he activates her failsafe and kills her.
  • The Bus Came Back: Darci, the robot model from Superman the Animated Series, comes back; she's posing as a teacher at Dakota High. Toyman finds her.
  • Carrying the Antidote: After Toyman activates the failsafe to melt Darci's body, he taunts her that he's the only one with the antidote. She begs him to help her and give it to her, but he simply tosses it away in front of her and lets her die.
  • Character Development: A villainous example; Toyman finally gets the memo that Darcy isn't interested in him, and that Superman isn't interested in Darci either. So instead of going all Yandere and targeting her in a dramatic fashion, he just kills her and lets the police arrest him.
  • Chekhov's Boomerang: Darci's failsafe. Toyman reveals that he made some adjustments on it to kill her if she betrayed him again.
  • Clark Kenting:
    • Clark of course shows up to interview Virgil and Richie about what they saw.
    • Darci in the meantime wears her hair in a bun and thick glasses. This is more justified since Darci has been presumed dead in a helicopter crash.
  • Crossover: With Superman: The Animated Series, although if the past couple of episodes are any indication, this episode takes place during Justice League.
  • Damsel out of Distress: Daisy frees herself from the table she's strapped to at the nearest opportunity, and briefly grapples with Darci, who has become her Body Double. When Darci tries to claim Daisy is the clone, Daisy threatens to punch her lights out.
  • Depending on the Artist: Superman is normally drawn with black dots for eyes, but here he has more comic accurate, realistic looking blue eyes.
  • Didn't Think This Through: So did Darci really forget that the last time she tried to kill Toyman that it went all pear-shaped?
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Static is annoyed that Toyman tends to ignore him and then not bother to remember his name.
  • Easily Forgiven: Superman has forgiven Darci for trying to kill Lana, and for trying to kill Toyman in her first appearance.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: Superman assumes that Toyman has come for Darci again, and as Clark Kent offers her protection. This is actually a logical explanation. He finds out her plan is a bit more complicated than that.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Daisy is shocked that her teacher is a robot who wants to impersonate her and take over her life.
  • Graceful Loser: This time around, Toyman isn't too brokenhearted about being sent to prison. He's sadder about losing the robot he loved.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: When Darci grabs a ping pong ball and Static is about to charge, Toyman quickly tells him that the ping pong ball is a device that can take out a whole city block. He then sadly activates the failsafe and lets the police arrest him.
  • Matryoshka Object: Toyman's giant robot monkey, which releases smaller robot versions of itself to fight off Superman and Static, while one of them kidnapped Daisy.
  • Moral Event Horizon: In-universe, Superman decides not to help Darci after she assists in kidnapping and impersonating a high school student.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: If Darci hadn't been focused on getting rid of the real Daisy, she could have killed Toyman and made it out of there long before Static was able to out her as a robot.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: So just how did Superman find out Darci was in Dakota? We'll never know.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: After activating her failsafe, Toyman reveals he has the antidote. Darci begs for it, but Toyman tosses it away and watches her die.
  • Redemption Rejection: Darci refuses Clark's and Superman's help to deal with Toyman before she's outed as a robot.
  • Save the Villain: Clark realizes who Darci is and talks to her in the privacy of the school bathroom. She refuses his help, saying that she's for her own plan.
  • Spot the Impostor: Darci becomes a mirror image of Daisy, right down to her DNA. Even Superman can't tell them apart with X-ray vision. Static finally does by generating everyone's bioelectric aura; due to being a robot, Darci doesn't have one.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: Superman has it for Darci, up until she works with Toyman to kidnap Daisy and impersonate her.
  • Taught by Experience:
    • Toyman has made toys laced with kryptonite and plastic that manage to incapacitate Superman and Static.
    • Also he made some upgrades to Darci's failsafe since she threatened to kill all of them.
  • Villain Has a Point: Darci is quite correct that she doesn't owe Toyman anything because she doesn't love him.
  • Villains Want Mercy: Once Toyman's failsafe starts to liquefy Darci's body, the latter begs him to give her the antidote, even calling him her "love" despite betraying him yet again. Toyman instead just destroys the antidote, having already gotten wise to Darci's tricks.
  • Yandere: When Darci betrays him again, Toyman kills her. Not that he's happy about it.
