Recap / Static Shock S 3 E 13 Romeo In The Mix

Go To

Frida and Daisy win a chance to direct a music video for Lil' Romeo, who agrees to do it if he gets to meet Static since they say he and Gear will be part of the project (without Virgil and Richie's consent). Meanwhile, a new Bang Baby called the Leech is kidnapping other Metahumans to absorb their powers and become the ultimate Metahuman criminal. He manages to kidnap Hotstreak, Ebon, Talon, and Static himself, leaving Lil' Romeo to rescue his hero.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Ascended Fanboy: Lil' Romeo really wasn't interested in this contest, until Bernie assured him that Static would appear and that he could wear a similar costume. He's also glad to work with Gear.
  • Brought Down to Normal: What happened to Static, Talon, Hotstreak, and Ebon after Leech kidnaps and imprisons them.
  • Call-Back: The producer behind the contest is Bernie Rast, and Virgil remembers what a disaster it was to work with him last time.
  • Chekhov's Gag: Lil' Romeo's Static lookalike costume leads to Leech accidentally abducting him instead.
  • Chekhov's Gun: When cornered by Leech, Lil' Romeo remembers Static telling him about his weakness to getting wet when he's charged up, so he sets off the sprinkler system to take out Leech.
  • Dramatic Irony: Leech manages to incapacitate Gear but otherwise ignores him, saying a Power Parasite like himself has no use for someone that relies on technology. He's unaware that Gear is a Bang Baby whose power is enhanced intelligence.
  • Evil Is Petty: Hotstreak locked up Lil' Romeo and Static because Lil' Romeo didn't give him an autograph.
  • The Ghost: The Teen Titans are mentioned again, this time with a "green one" stated to be a member, possibly suggesting Beast Boy.
  • Gilligan Cut: Virgil insists there's absolutely no way he's ever working on this project and then we see him in costume on the set.
Gear: Y'know, I admire a brother who sticks to his principles. You wouldn't happen to see one around, would ya?
  • Hoist by His Own Petard:
    • Lil' Romeo managed to take down Leech (who had reabsorbed Static's powers) by activating the building's sprinkler system, shorting him out. The rapper points out that although Leech absorbed Static's power's he also absorbed his weakness to water.
    • Leech manages to send one of Gear's gadgets back at him.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Ebon, Hotstreak, and Talon (who were still depowered) locked and abandoned Static and Lil' Romeo in the building with Leech. By episode's end, they are arrested as Gear points out how easy they were to catch without their powers.
  • Money Is Not Power: A similar principle. When Leech kidnaps Lil' Romeo, he threatens to sue Leech if he doesn't let him go. Leech says he doesn't care before using the rapper as bait to trap Static.
  • Off Screen Moment Of Awesome: Leech got Ebon shortly before the opening scene.
  • Power Parasite: Leech's power is to absorb the powers of other Metahumans he touches.
  • Pre-Asskicking One-Liner: Right before Lil' Romeo sets off the sprinklers, he tells Leech, "You're all washed up!"
  • Something We Forgot: After Leech is dealt with and handed over to the authorities, Static and Lil' Romeo see Ebon, Hotstreak, and Talon already in custody.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Lil' Romeo helps free Static and his enemies from their cells to get away from Leech. Ebon thanks them by locking them inside the building with Leech while they make a getaway.
  • What Kind of Lame Power Is Heart, Anyway?: After incapacitating Gear, Leech taunts him by saying his powers aren't worth absorbing.
