Recap / 6teen S2 E4 "Fish and Make Up"

Go To

Airdate: November 24th, 2005

Caitlin annoys her friends with stories about her new boyfriend Wade, and Nikki ends her friendship with her because of that. Meanwhile, Jude gets a pet fish.

Tropes:

  • Amplified Animal Aptitude: Jude's fish. He is horrified (and actually screams from inside his bag!) and Jude is offended when Wyatt decides to eat sushi right in front of them.
  • Amusing Injuries: Jen being thrown down the stairs into a cactus is played most for laughs, though in-universe her friends react with appropriate horror.
  • Artistic License – Biology: In this episode, Fish has eyelids and is able to blink. But fish in real life do not have eyelids, and therefore are not able to blink.
  • Big "SHUT UP!":
    • Nikki screams this to Caitlin when she starts to talk about her boyfriend Wade again. Thus starting the feud.
    • Nikki and Caitlin simultaneously yell at Jonsey to shut up when he tries to Change the Uncomfortable Subject by attempting to tell the girls about his new job in the woman's fragrance department.
  • Break the Cutie: Jude, when Fish died.
  • Companion Cube: Jude receives a pet rock from Caitlin and Nikki at the end of the episode to replace Fish.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": Jude's fish is named just Fish.
  • Feud Episode: Between Caitlin and Nikki after an argument between them blows completely out of proportion. They get back together in the end at the funeral of Jude's pet goldfish.
Nikki: You're right, Caitlin! I don't want to listen to your stupid stories, because I'm not your real friend! In fact, we're not friends at all!
  • Funny Background Event: Jude and Star quietly walking away when they notice Caitlin and Nikki are arguing with Jen, Wyatt, and Jonesy in the middle. Fortunately for them, Caitlin and Nikki didn't notice them.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: The first time that Caitlin cries in this episode.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Caitlin keeps constantly talking about her latest boyfriend Wade endlessly to the rest of the gang. This not only annoys them, it also annoys everyone else around her. She was completely unaware that other people were glaring at her to shut the hell up since her talking was distracting (Caitlin holding up the line at the coffee shop and talking during a movie, it's a wonder she wasn't escorted out of the establishments for holding up businesses).
  • Never My Fault: While Nikki snapping at Caitlin for talking nonstop about Wade is understandable, Caitlin gets defensive and refuses to stop, calling Nikki a cow for not wanting to listen to her stories.
  • No Cartoon Fish: Averted with Fish, which makes his sudden death sadder.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Jen, Jonesy, and Wyatt when Nikki and Caitlin caught them trying to secretly hang out with the other.
    • Again, when they noticed before Jude that his pet fish died.
  • Overly Long Gag: Caitlin urinates for twelve seconds straight... and then she gives one last push at the end.
  • Please Wake Up: When Jude notices that Fish is belly-up and unresponsive, he thinks he's asleep and tries to shake him awake. He wonders why he won't wake up, and then it sinks in for him.
  • Potty Emergency: Caitlin ends up holding it all day due to being unable and unwilling to come over to Nikki's side of the mall to use the washrooms. She takes full advantage of the situation when she's forced to come over to Fish's funeral.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Nikki was already seething in annoyance from Caitlin's constant talking about Wade over and over. She talks about it again one time too many that Nikki finally screams at Caitlin to just shut up.
  • Shout-Out: The movie that Jude and Fish are watching at the beginning of the episode is called Kill Phil.
  • Silence Is Golden: Most of the time during the teens' second attempt to get the feuding parties back together, Played for Laughs.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome:
    • Jonsey attempts to use perfume as a breath freshener. It just ends up causing a burning sensation in his mouth.
    • In this episode, Jude provides a crash course in how not to take care of your pet fish:
      • Leaving Fish in the same bag he got him in the whole time.
      • Trying to feed Fish popcorn and soda by throwing the human food right into his water. Later after that, Fish is discovered to be dead.
  • This Is My Side: When the feud goes From Bad to Worse, Caitlin and Nikki split their working sides of the mall up. It comes back to bite them later.
