“The ski resort is having a contest? And the girl with the right athletic ability and elegance earns the title Moon Princess? Cool! But how will I have a chance to win if I'm trapped in the freezing snow?! Either way, I better get out of here before I catch a cold. I am Sailor Moon! In the Name of the Moon, I'll punish you!”
Usagi Tsukino

(DiC Episode: "Ski Bunny Blues")

The girls head out to a winter ski resort, with some unexpected help from Yuuichirou, to partake in a surprise Moon Princess skiing contest. Both Usagi and Rei participate and come across a treacherous obstacle course made by Kunzite's Winter Youma: Blizzar.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Achievements in Ignorance: Usagi manages to be one the last two contestants of the skiing contest. She does this despite having no expertise and while crying all the way.
  • Affluent Ascetic: Rei questions why a rugged rich boy like Yuuichirou would rather spend his time training at her temple rather then any other high class place and he answers that he wants to be a better person. Usagi insists that he just wants to be with Rei.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Rei is delighted to hear Yuuichirou offer her and her friends a place to stay during their ski trip. However, she isn't too crazy on the idea of him tagging along. She eventually changes her mind as the episode progresses.
  • Big Fancy House: Yuuichirou's parents own a mansion of a cabin and allows the girls to use it during their ski trip.
  • Demoted to Extra: Luna and Artemis only show up for one scene which is them napping on a warm kotatsu while the girls are on their trip. The same can apply to Makoto, Minako and Ami who missed out on the Dark Kingdom plot.
  • Friendly Rivalry: Both Usagi and Rei compete against each other in the skiing contest.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Rei uses Yuuchirou turning into ice as an opportunity to transform while Usagi calls her out for her cold-heartedness.
  • Half-Truth: Minako plans on telling the cats that they'll be going to the ski resort to do some serious training. The type of training they'd do is up to their interpretation.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Yuuichirou takes a chilling attack meant for the girls which turns him into a Human Popsicle.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Endymion accuses Kunzite of not taking the Sailor Guardians seriously based on how he analyzes them on a shallow level.
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: Sailor Mars urges Tuxedo Mask to remember how he always fought alongside the Sailor Guardians and wanted to protect Sailor Moon. This would help in weaken some of Metallia's control over him.
  • An Ice Person: Along with manipulating the arctic terrain, the Winter Youma can freeze people or create icicles as spears.
  • Idiot Ball: Apart from Minako commenting on the strange coincidence, not once do the girls consider that the skiing contest for the Moon Princess is another trap by the Dark Kingdom. It's especially concerning since this is the third scheme that was tailor made to identify and target Usagi.
  • I'm Standing Right Here: Usagi is crushed that the youma believes Rei to be the Moon Princess and not her.
  • Locked in a Room: Usagi and Rei end up trapped in a snow bank by Blizzar. It's here that they work out their issues involving Mamoru with Rei accepting her loss and encouraging Usagi to give it her best.
  • The Lost Lenore: Kunzite is still devastated by Zoisite's death and is driven to succeed in his honor.
  • Mistaken for Badass: Blizzar accuses Rei of being the true Moon Princess because of, in her words, her looks, her athletic ability and her elegance. Not that she's complaining.
Rei: Oh! So you think that too, huh? You're awfully honest for a monster.
  • My Significance Sense Is Tingling: Rei's psychic intuition kicks up when Blizzar begins to manipulate the terrain to wipe out the contestants.
  • Not Bad: Rei thinks this of Usagi when she sees her passing her during the racing course.
  • Not Helping Your Case: Usagi starts to get cold feet when she sees how high they're going. Yuuichirou assures her that the destination is much higher.
  • Nothing Is the Same Anymore: Rei accepts that Mamoru isn't her destined lover and is supportive of Usagi getting together with him.
  • Now You Tell Me: Rei is pretty annoyed that Usagi came up with the idea to turn into Sailor Mars so they could melt the ice after her initial escape attempts failed on her.
  • Oh, Crap!: Usagi gets this when she sees the size of the mountain where the Moon Princess contest is being held.
  • The Promise: While giving Usagi her blessing to pursue Mamoru, Rei promises to chastise and punish her if she isn't living life as happily as she can.
  • Rule of Symbolism: Tuxedo Mask's black roses turn to red when he remembers his feelings for the Sailor Guardians.
  • Running Gag: Minako getting proverbs wrong and being corrected by Ami first appears in this episode.
  • Secretly Wealthy: Rei and the girls are amazed to learn that Yuuichirou comes from a loaded family.
  • Ski-Resort Episode: Usagi convinces her friends to go to the mountains for an upcoming skiing contest.
  • Snowlems: Played with Blizzar. She still resembles a monster woman but her costume contains little snowmen that emote whenever she's attacking.
  • Smooch of Victory: Sailor Mars gives her unconscious prince a kiss on the cheek to thank him for always trying to save her.
  • Terrain Sculpting: Thanks to her being a frozen themed monster, Blizzar can manipulate the snowy field to her advantage in order to wipe out the participants and find the Moon Princess among them.
  • Tsundere: Rei acts like this to Usagi. Despite having a heartfelt conversation in the snow which improves their friendship, Rei still belittles her in front of their other friends.
  • Villainous Rescue: Endymion manages to intercept two of the youma's attacks against the Guardians.
  • Who Dares?: Sailor Mars chastises Blizzar for daring to freeze her Yuuichirou.
  • You Shall Not Pass!: Yuuichirou cries this out when standing in front of a giant snowball to prevent it from advancing to his princess. It doesn't work.
