“You dare turn a kid's hero like Red Man into an evil monster?! And force him to use Lake Ahan's famous Marimo Algae Balls as a weapon against innocent people?! I bet the Hokaito Site Seeing Association didn't give you permission to do that, did they? I am Sailor Moon! In the Name of the Moon, I'll punish you!”
Usagi Tsukino

(DiC Episode: "Tuxedo Melvin")

Thanks to some misguided advice from Usagi, Umino decides to turn into "Tuxedo Umino Mask" in order to win Naru's heart. As he does so, Zoisite comes up with a scheme to steal Sailor Moon's Rainbow Crystal using the damsel in distress as his key pawn.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • All Part of the Show: Some of the kid attendees believe that Sailor Moon's battle with the youma was part of the Red-Man show.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Zoisite succeeds in stealing Sailor Moon's Rainbow Crystal.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Zoisite gets away with a Rainbow Crystal and Usagi is concerned that Tuxedo Mask isn't as much of a reliable ally as she believes him to be. On the plus side, her mission to get Naru and Umino together turned out to be a success.
  • Call-Back:
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Zoisite's motivation in stealing the rest of the Rainbow Crystals is so his boyfriend Kunzite can pay more attention to him and not their queen.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Umino is mercilessly beaten by the monster Akan.
  • Declaration of Protection: Tuxedo Umino Mask vows to protect Naru even if it costs him his life.
  • Dub Name Change: As Redman was/is unknown in North America, the DiC dub called the characters "the Wacky Wrestlers".
  • Fighting Your Friend: Zoisite tries to turn Naru into a monster so Sailor Moon can give up her Rainbow Crystal. It doesn't work out since he ends up turning Red Man into a monster instead.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: Akan attacks people by throwing algae balls at them. The kicker is that they can trap a person into a giant algae ball that can suffocate them if they're in for too long.
  • Hostage Situation: Zoisite convinces Sailor Moon to give up her crystal by threatening the lives of the park goers, Naru included, with suffocating algae balls.
  • Improbable Weapon User: Tuxedo Umino Mask uses tempura shrimp to fight the Monster of the Week.
  • Internal Reveal: Luna reveals to the girls that she comes from the moon.
  • Mistaken for Badass: When Zoisite first goes to Naru's house to turn her into a monster, he runs away when he sees Umino believing him to be Tuxedo Mask who managed to catch on to his wicked plan.
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: Zoisite modifies the Dark Crystal to turn humans into monsters.
  • Relationship Upgrade: Impressed by Umino's resolve, Naru decides to accept him as her boyfriend in the end of the episode.
  • Skewed Priorities: After Luna reveals her true lineage, Usagi asks if there really is a rabbit who makes mochi candy on the moon.
  • She's Not My Girlfriend: Naru insists that she and Umino are just friends, much to Umino's displeasure.
  • Shipper on Deck: Usagi can sense potential romance between Umino and Naru so she pushes the boy to become cooler so Naru can truly love him.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Naru and Umino go to see a Red-Man live performance.
    • Umino plays a Street Fighter arcade machine at the Crown Game Center.
  • Super Zeroes: Umino tries his hand at being a superhero to impress Naru. But his sub-par performance leaves her feeling embarrassed for the two of them.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Akan has this reaction when Umino challenges him to a fight.
  • You Owe Me: Naru tells this to Usagi after she reluctantly accepts to go to the Red-Man show with Umino.
