Recap / SMG 4 SMG 4 News

The most reliable news source out there 💯

SMG4 and SMG3 have their very own news channel! But as they and their news team try to report all the daily, zany happenings in the Mushroom Kingdom to their fellow watchers, SMG3 causes as much trouble as he can for his fellow co-host, who is gradually worn down by his Jerkass behavior on-air.

Tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch: When Meggy sees she gets to interview the greatest basketball player, one might assume it's Michael Jordan or Luigi (with good reason). But to her shock, it's... Mario, somehow obtaining the title through some zany basketball moves.
  • Big Ball of Violence: One breaks out between SMGs 3 and 4 when the latter attacks the former for hijacking a news segment just to ridicule him.
  • Big Eater: When the camera pans to Meggy before she's ready, she's slurping a huge bowl of ramen… and around her are at least 48 more. This is one of the rare times we see Meggy's appetite rival Mario's.
  • Call-Back: Several.
    • Luigi appears as his "Mr. L" persona from Super Paper Mario but in this universe was last seen in "If Mario Was Spiderman".
    • During the restaurant scene we see the usual Toadette with Toad (the latter tied up) and Swag with Sonic. On a much sadder note, Melony is sitting at the end table alone hugging her Axol plushie and Axol Jr.
  • Downer Ending: The SMG duo's news channel goes awry, and it culminates in an angry SMG3 hijacking the entire station with the news team still inside and dragging it- and himself- into a black hole right after SMG4 bankrupts SMG3's coffee shop in retribution for ruining the show.
  • Driven to Suicide: Boopkins is convinced that he is a terrible weatherman after seemingly causing horrible fires in various areasnote , so he throws himself out the nearest window to end it all... from the ground floor.
  • Evil Is Petty: Why are the Wario Bros robbing the bank today? They need the money for tickets to Disneyland. Journalist Bob doesn't see the issue in it and even joins them.
  • Fun with Subtitles: The chyron appearing throughout most of this episode often has a joke poking fun at whatever is happening or just happened onscreen, such as one of SMG3's attempts to promote his business during a news segment being labeled, "Chief broadcaster determined to get dying store off the ground". Some of them don't even make any sense at all, most notably "Strange top-hatted horse spotted near Showgrounds", when the episode depicts no such thing.
  • Funny Background Event: Why does Sonic look so concerned on his date with Swag? Because Chris is against the back wall with a sniper rifle aimed at his head.
  • Overly Long Name: Whimpu's villain name is... long. So long that before he can complete the process of announcing it (quickly, mind you), the scene cuts to something else.
  • Right Way/Wrong Way Pair: SMG4 does his very best to make sure their news channel stays afloat by reporting actual happenings and maintaining a professional attitude. SMG3... not so much; he constantly hinders SMG4's progress, shamelessly plugs III's Coffee and Bombs any chance he gets, and outright hijacks one segment just to slander SMG4 on-air.
  • Running Gag: The news chyron making snarky, funny jokes about the news channel's happenings.
  • Swapped Roles: The very first segment revolves around a brigade of firefighter cats rescuing Steve from high up a tree.
  • Take That!: SMG4's commercial is one to the iPhone. Almost immediately after, SMG3 does an entire segment of this to SMG4 by having characters react to his outdated memes.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: What does SMG4 have to say when he realizes the news station is going into a black hole, with him inside? "Would you look at that?" He says this while Meggy and Boopkins react more appropriately with a Jaw Drop.
