Recap / Runaways (2017) S02E07: "Last Rites"

Go To

It's time for the Runaways to stop Jonah, once and for all. But while the kids scramble to stall out Jonah’s plan, the parents unexpectedly arrive. Will PRIDE fight against their own kids or join their ranks against the powerful, and vengeful, Jonah?

  • Accidental Murder: Frank, when he tries to wrestle the gun from Destiny's brother Oscar, accidentally sets off a shot and kills the young man.
  • Beam-O-War: Karolina and Jonah engage in one.
  • Big "NO!": Karolina drops one when she sees Nico lunging at Jonah to impale him with the Staff of One.
  • Blow You Away: Nico uses the staff's power to escape the dig site by riding on a hurricane.
  • Come with Me If You Want to Live: A villainous example. After her first decline, Jonah unsuccessfully tries to pressure Karolina into coming with him by having the ship accelerate and thus causing big destruction.
  • Curse Cut Short: Seems Jonah is about to deliver an Atomic F-Bomb after getting impaled but he merely collapses.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Jonah emotionally manipulating and grooming a young Leslie and encouraging her to end the contact with her mother is eerily similar to the practices of Scientology. And sexual predators.
  • Enemy Mine: The Runaways first team up with Geoffrey and then with the rest of their parents against Jonah on the dig site.
  • Flashback: The beginning of the episode shows Jonah and a young Leslie at the deathbed of the latter's father David, and Jonah grooming her to be his next bride.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Despite knowing what he did, Karolina initially refuses to believe that Jonah would hurt her or her friends.
  • How We Got Here: The start of the episode shows scattered images of the Runaways and PRIDE members scattered on the ground, with Jonah looming over them.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Geoffrey refuses to discuss the murders he and PRIDE committed, as he thinks that Jonah is the more pressing matter.
  • I Lied: Jonah lied about the ship not causing an earthquake when taking off.
  • Internal Reveal: The rest of the Runaways learn that Jonah is Karolina's father and that they have been meeting.
  • In the Back: How Nico kills Jonah.
  • Living Ship: The alien ship seems to be alive.
  • Mid-Season Twist: A mild one, but the overriding arc that has carried the show up this point is more-or-less resolved, leading to a number of out-of-nowhere plot hooks showing up at the last minute to keep the conflict going.
  • Mind over Matter: Nico can now call the Staff of One to her hand willingly.
  • Moral Myopia: Karolina blaming Nico for the death of her father, forgetting that he had murdered her sister.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Nico is horrified after killing Jonah.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Gert and Karolina pull this card on Alex in regards to their parents for his plan to destroy the ship with sentient beings on it.
  • Oh, Crap!: Everyone's reaction when Jonah appears at the dig site.
  • Revenge:
    • Destiny Gonzales' brother tries to ambush Frank for the death of his sister.
    • Nico kills Jonah in a fit of rage for murdering Amy.
  • Sarcastic Confession: Jonah straight-up admits trying to kill Geoffrey.
  • Shout-Out: The alien ship is compared to the Death Star and Karolina falls with style down the dig site.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: Everybody seems to feel a certain bit of sympathy for Jonah when he dies, Karolina most of all.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Jonah gets extremely angry when Victor and the Yorkes destroy the ship.
  • We Can Rule Together: Jonah invites Karolina to join him.
  • Wham Line: Jonah seemingly not recognizing Karolina during his last moments and speaking with an Australian accent.
Jonah: Where am I? Why are you crying?
Karolina: Dad. Dad, it's me. It's your daughter Karolina.
    Jonah: Who are you?
  • What Measure Is a Non-Human?: Gert and Karolina advocate for saving the aliens on the ship and the group reluctantly agrees. The parents however have no such moral boundaries.
    • Inverted with Jonah, who doesn't give a damn about lives not of his own species.
  • You Killed My Father: Despite everything he did, Karolina is not happy after Nico kills Jonah.
