Recap / Peg + Cat S1E3 "The Messy Room Problem"

Go To

The episode begins with the Neighbour Ladies gardening and Peg tidying her room. She explains that she is doing so because her mother is having company over and she'll show the visitors Cat's drawing of circles. She wonders how he drew them so perfectly and he explains that he used a cup. Peg plans to draw rectangles with her favourite crayon, which she calls "Little Bluey", but cannot find it. She searches but still can't find it, creating the episode's first problem. Cat perceives Peg as sad, which makes him angry and he begins frantically searching, making a mess in the process but succeeding in finding "Little Bluey". However, there's another problem: the guests will arrive soon and the room is now messy. Cat then notices Peg's underwear, which makes them both laugh.

Ramone then walks past with an accordion and Peg and Cat block the window by holding things (Peg a record and a frisbee and Cat a basketball and a beach ball) so that he doesn't see the mess. Ramone explains that he's arrived early to play music for Peg's mother's guests and invites Peg and Cat to jam. Peg lies that they are exercising by lifting circles. Ramone says that technically the balls Cat's holding are spheres. He then explains the difference and walks off to practice accordion.

Peg then explains to Cat, who is trying to stuff a giant toy banana into the trash, that while her things are too important to throw away, she can sort them. Cat doesn't know what sorting is, so Peg explains. They then begin sorting Peg's things, singing about it as they do.

When they're done, the Pig, who was under Peg's bed, spills flags onto Peg's floor. He comes out wearing a triangle pendant around his neck and toy pizza slices on his feet and playing a triangle. Peg says, "What is it with you and triangles anyway?". He begins to sing their praises, but Peg interrupts, asking Pig to help her re-sort the triangles. He's reluctant but she promises to let him borrow her bathing suit with the triangle design. She gets it out of her drawer but yellow gumballs spill out of it and onto the floor. It turns out that Big Mouth, who was hiding in the drawer, put them there. She asks if he took them and he shakes his head, but then blows a yellow gum bubble. Peg allows him to borrow her yellow crayon in exchange for helping to finish the sorting. They then all break into the song again.

However, the Neighbour Ladies give Peg and Cat two bags of hand-me-down clothes, insisting on doing so even when Peg tells them to give the clothes later. The bags are too heavy for them and they spill the clothes. To make matters worse, some autumn leaves blow in, followed by pine cones and hats. So they resume their sorting.

They're nearly done, but the universe doesn't want to allow the "freaking out" scene not to happen, so when Cat tries to put the underwear in the closet, a bunch of round objects roll out, prompting the usual freak-out because, due to it all being round, Peg doesn't know how to sort it (and Pig sits on a beach ball and Big Mouth chews on a record). Peg gets her usual moment of inspiration from seeing Cat roll a ball, reminding her of the "spheres vs circles" thing she learnt earlier. They sort the spheres from the circles, completing the tidying up.

Then, the guests (namely Ramone and the Neighbour Ladies) arrive and Ramone admires the spheres and Peg shows Cat's drawings. The Neighbour Ladies asks why Cat only drew circles in the picture and so Cat sings about how he likes circles and doesn't want to draw other shapes.

This episode provides examples of

  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: Ramone once puts a beret on Cat.
  • Aliens Speaking English: Big Mouth, an alien, says, "Who knew?" and sings along to the sorting song.
  • Amusing Alien: Big Mouth blows bubbles with Peg's gumballs and tries to eat a record.
  • Anthropomorphic Food: Peg has a toy banana with a face.
  • Big "NO!": Peg and Cat shout, "No!" when given clothes at an inopportune time.
  • Buffy Speak: The pseudo-word "sorty" is used during the song about sorting.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The undies that Peg and Cat giggled about early in the episode end up causing trouble when Cat puts them away and objects roll out of the closet.
  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander: The Pig hides under Peg's bed and plays with her triangles, an example of his goofy behaviour. Big Mouth also exhibits some of his own goofy behaviour by hiding in Peg's drawer and trying to eat her record.
  • Exposed Extraterrestrials: The naked alien Big Mouth features.
  • Extreme Omnivore: Big Mouth tries to eat a record. Especially strange for him, as he usually only eats objects that are both yellow and small enough for him to eat.
  • Musical Chores: Peg and Cat sing about sorting Peg's things while doing so.
  • Musicalis Interruptus: The Pig tries to sing about triangles, but Peg interrupts him.
  • Pun: When Peg asks Cat if he's ready to sort, he jokingly says, "Sort of."
  • Say My Name: As usual, Peg asks, "Ramone?!" when he arrives.
  • Scatting: Cat does a lot of his "doo-doo-doo" type noises during his song at the end.
  • Shaking the Rump: During the sorting song, both Peg and Cat shake their butts a bit.
  • Snark Ball: The usually-sincere Cat says, "Yeah, right" to express disbelief.
  • Speak in Unison:
    • The Neighbour Ladies read out the title in unison.
    • Peg and Cat shout, "No!" in unison when the bags of clothes are weighing them down.
  • Tempting Fate: Peg asks how things could get worse after spilling the clothes, and then objects blow into the room.
