Recap / Peg + Cat S1E2 "The Space Creature Problem"

Go To

Peg and Cat are playing a bouncing game with Richard on his home world the Purple Planet. Richard finds Peg and Cat's bouncing funny. Peg then loses her favourite marble. She chases after it but there's a problem: they don't know which of three craters it fell into. Richard gets a bit teary-eyed, but Peg is more optimistic and begins searching in one of the craters. Richard asks to search in the second one and Peg says yes and asks Cat to look in the third. Cat sneezes and blows the marble out of one of the craters. Peg catches it so begins to play the ukulele. Richard wants to bounce while singing but Peg fears losing her marble again. Richard then takes out a safe and reveals that its code is 100. They open it up to reveal a blankie, that apparently he never uses but likes to know it's there. They then put the marble in and break into "Problem Solved".

Cat waves at a strange spaceship, which then begins to approach them. Peg and Cat begin to run away and Richard worries that they'll leave him alone with the spaceship. Peg is still scared but she decides to be brave and face the spaceship's driver. The doors open and out come the 100 chickens with a pram full of corn, and the Pig. Cat begins to eat the corn and Richard begins showing the chickens around. They then see a sleeping blue alien. Peg enquires about the alien and Richard says that the alien's name is Big Mouth and he only eats things that are little and yellow. Big Mouth then wakes up and starts chasing the chickens. They hide, so he goes back to sleep, but there's still the problem of getting them into their spaceship before Big Mouth gets them.

Richard gets choked up again and Cat doesn't sympathise, but Peg reassures him that they'll solve the problem. Richard asks if Pig has any ideas, but Pig only burps, disappointing Richard and Cat. Just then, Ramone shows up wearing a jet pack, space boots, a utility belt, and a hat with antennae. He reveals that he's been collecting space rocks for NASA and shows them some. He asks if they want to see him collect a hundred rocks, but Peg and Cat think that would take too long and be too difficult. However, Ramone shows them a method to make it easier and quicker: using trays that hold ten rocks each and allow him to pick up ten at a time. He then demonstrates and collects the hundred rocks. Peg asks if they can use the trays to pick the chickens up and put them into the spaceship and Ramone says yes.

So (after Peg plays with her marble a bit), they climb into a flying device holding the trays and begin flying around. They accidentally wake up Big Mouth, who follows them. Finally, they go into a huge crater where the chickens are at and begin scooping them up. However, Big Mouth appears in the crater. Ramone scoops up the rest of the chickens and they leave with the chickens in tow and Big Mouth following them. Ramone then leaves to keep working and Richard lies down to take a nap on Big Mouth, which Pig points out.

They escape with the chickens and put them in the spaceship, tying it to their own, and Richard goes home because his mother called him. Peg then goes to get her marble back but freaks out because she's forgotten what the number 100 looks like but has her 'eureka' moment when Cat accidentally makes a 100 shape by lying next to two craters. They begin to take off in their spaceship but Big Mouth holds it down. Cat, however, distracts him with baby corn and they set off. Peg sings "Problem Solved", then a bird directs them to a galaxy shaped like the number 100 and they sing about the number 100.

This episode provides examples of

  • Aliens Speaking English: Richard is an alien but speaks English fine.
  • Animate Inanimate Object: Peg and Cat pass a celestial body with a face.
  • Artificial Gravity: Both Peg and the chickens' spaceships evidently have artificial gravity, judging by the fact that their occupants don't float.
  • Artistic License: The Milky Way isn't really shaped like a 100.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Interruption: When Richard scoops up ten chickens, he says, "I have a—-", but then Cat sees Big Mouth and interrupts with, "Big Mouth!". Richard takes offence and says, "I do not have a big mouth!".
  • Catchphrase: Peg says her "big problem" catchphrase twice, Ramone says, "I do what I can" once, and Peg says, "totally freaking out" once.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The baby corn seems insignificant at first, but then it becomes useful later when Cat uses it to distract Big Mouth.
  • Civilised Animal: The chickens live on a farm, act like chickens generally, and go "cheep", but they also went to space.
  • Delicious Distraction: Invoked when Cat distracts Big Mouth from the chickens with the baby corn.
  • Dissonant Serenity: Cat doesn't seem bothered by the fact that the chickens are in danger of being eaten.
  • Exposed Extraterrestrials:
    • Downplayed for Richard, who wears only bracelets.
    • Played straight for Big Mouth, who doesn't wear clothes.
  • Jerkass Ball: Perhaps "jerkass" is too strong a word, but Cat acts a bit meaner than usual when he says, "Oh, sheesh" as a response to Richard being sad.
  • Pun: When Richard is showing the chickens around, he says, "This is the rock that I rock on!" and starts rocking out on a literal rock.
  • "Setting Off" Song: Downplayed for the song at the end, which is mainly about the number 100, but also about how they're on their way home.
  • Space Episode: This episode involves Peg and Cat visiting an alien planet.
