Recap / Peg + Cat S1E1 "The Chicken Problem"

Go To

Peg, Cat, and the Pig are at the farm, planning to have a picnic with pie. Peg talks about how everybody has a piece of pie the right size for them, but then she notices that there is one extra slice of pie. She does not like the idea of no one eating the pie, but Cat brings a chicken over to take the last slice. However, the rest escape and begin to run amok. This is trouble because the farmer (who is out in his cornfield) outright said not to let them escape.

They try to carry chickens back into the coop but can only bring ten back. Peg tries calling the rest but they don't listen. She decides to make them race into the coop, but the ten ones in the coop race out instead.

They wander into the barn, where Ramone is making a liquid that makes corn stalks grow taller. Peg asks Ramone for help with the chickens and he brings out two wheelbarrows and a pram, then sings to them to come in. They do, and then Ramone leaves. They try to push the wheelie things but they're too heavy, so Peg has her freak-out. She then notices Cat with a slice of pie and has an idea: organize the wheelie things by size like they organized the pie. This works and the episode ends with the farmer joining in on their picnic.

This episode provides examples of

  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal:
    • At the beginning, the cow and the other pig are seen wearing shower caps.
    • Peg draws Cat wearing a bow tie and glasses when talking about his perceived intelligence.
    • At the end, the Littlest Chicken, Cat, Pig, and the cow all wear hats.
  • Amazing Technicolor Wildlife: Cat is his usual dark blue self.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Peg narrates the opening, then later tells the audience not to ask pigs for math advice.
  • Catchphrase: This is the first appearance of the "Big problem", "You amazing genius cat", "Totally freaking out", and "I do what I can" catchphrases.
  • Character Tics: Peg is seen doing the flailing limbs thing usually associated with her freak-outs twice, although the first time she is only partially freaking out.
  • Delicious Distraction: Pig (and to a lesser extent, Cat) get distracted by the pie.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": Not only is there Cat, this is the first appearance of Pig.
  • Funny Animal: Cat and Pig walk on two legs.
  • Nearly Normal Animal: It's unknown where the farm animals fit on the Sliding Scale of Anthropomorphism. They can talk, but they don't say much and the chickens actually say the word "cheep" a lot. They mainly live like farm animals but are occasionally seen doing people-y things like wearing hats.
  • No Name Given: The farmer and most of his animals are unnamed.
  • Vocal Dissonance: The cow has a big deep voice despite being female.
