Tropes for the episode:
- Abusive Parents: Vern hits his son and decides to get rid of Andrew after he rejects him and his beleifs.
- Asshole Victim: Ryan's attack on Cudney is rather violent and completely motivated by self-interest but you'll be hard pressed to find someone who feels sorry for the unrepentant child-killer.
- Dirty Prison Guard: Vern has Andrew killed through Officer Lopresti.
- Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: Andrew tells Beecher he misses his mom.
- Et Tu, Brute?: McManus is hurt when Gloria doesn't agree to be a character witness.
- Even Evil Has Loved Ones: After learning his father suffered a stroke Carlo feels guilty as he hadn't yet apologized over their argument.
- Even Evil Has Standards: O'Reily is sickened when Cudney gloats to him about killing a child.
- Guilt Complex: McManus decides to not fight against Howell's false accusations, as he feels he's mistreated her and other women on an emotional level.
- My God, What Have I Done?: Beecher is utterly guilt-ridden when he realizes his plan to cause Andrew's death worked.
- Insane Troll Logic: Kenny has Poet humiliate Said because, in his mind, the Muslims screwed him over, when in reality he lost fairly to Khan in a boxing match.
- Lack of Empathy:
- Unlike Beecher, O'Reily and Keller aren't at all repentant over what they did to Andrew.
- Kenny's reaction to his wife's death is to feign grief in front of McManus then laugh like it's a big joke once he's out of earshot.
- Poet and Pierce express condolences in front of McManus, then laugh along with Kenny when he leaves.
- Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: if Said hadn't give Poet permission to write in the previous episode, he likely wouldn't have been humiliated here.
- Nice Guy: Mukada offers his support for Clayton if he ever needs it.
- Pay Evil unto Evil: Cudney sees his murder of the son of the doctor who aborted his baby as this.
- Star-Crossed Lovers: Said choses Tricia over his position as the Muslim leader.
- Ungrateful Bastard: Poet humiliates Said over his attraction to Tricia when the man previously went out on a limb to help him get paroled.
- Redemption Equals Death: Andrew is finally beginning to stand up to his father and abandon the Nazi ideology he was raised with, but ends up dying in solitary via a heroin overdose arranged by his father before he can put things right.
