Recap / Orange Is The New Black S 04 E 1 Work That Body For Me

Go To

"Work That Body For Me" is the Season 4 premiere, picking up right where Season 3 left off. The inmates frolic in the lake, while the staff scrambles to maintain order with over 100 new inmates and the guards on strike. Caputo orders more guards in all the chaos. We find out Alex' fate. Suzanne and Maureen, AWOL after the lake, wander in the woods. Luschek bonds with the new celebrity inmate.

This episode provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Acquired Situational Narcissism: After getting Stella thrown into Max, Piper starts walking around with a big ego and acting narcissistic towards all the inmates as if she controls the place.
  • And I Must Scream: Alex discovers that her hitman is still alive but because of his beating from Lolly, he is unable to move or speak. Only breathe. This prompts Alex to Mercy Kill him.
  • Almost Kiss: Suzanne and Maureen almost kiss before the alarm goes off at the prison.
  • As You Know : The guard and Chang point out that Litchfield's inmates have escaped through the hole in the fence.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Lolly has spectacular timing.
  • Bigger Is Better in Bed : Lorna's new husband.
Lorna: "Italian" don't rhyme with "stallion" for nothing!
  • Body in a Breadbox : You'd think that with all the hijinks in the greenhouse Litchfield would guard or monitor it a little more closely.
  • Catholic School Girls Rule : Played with. Morello went to Catholic school, and used the loafer for unusual purposes.
  • Conspiracy Theorist: Lolly offers several theories, each wilder than the last.
    • The reason Chang doesn't go out to the lake is cause she thinks it's polluted. Turns out she's quite right as a lot of the girls start feeling rather...itchy.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle : Lolly kicks Aydin to death.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Judy King reacting to Luschek tampering with Caputo's cookies by farting on them.
Judy: And they say the art of gift-giving is dead.
  • Disposing of a Body: Frieda, Alex and Lolly slice up Aydin's body and plant him in the garden.
  • The Dog Bites Back: As payback for how Piper treated her last season, Flaca outs Piper as the "gangsta" ring-leader of the inmates to the new inmates who have killed people.
  • The Dreaded: Piper thinks she's this when two female inmates run away from her. In actuality the two inmates were running outside to the lake.
  • Everybody Has Standards: Suzanne may be "Crazy" but even she couldn't handle Maureen's level of crazy and ditches her in the forest.
Suzanne: Now, she wanted the fairy tale. I didn't. I just wanted dinner.
  • It's All About Me: Squirrel calls Piper out on this as Piper blocks her path and believes she's the reason people are running to the lake.
Squirrel: Jesus, Chapman. A little magic happens around here, and you make it all about you, like you made it happen.
  • I Love the Dead: Kubra is implied to be one when he texts his hitman Aydin for a picture of Alex's breasts while she's still "dead". This disgusts Alex.
  • Mercy Kill: Alex gives this to Aydin when it turns out he's weak, but still alive.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Lolly kicks Aydin's throat in until he's dead. Subverted when it turns out that he isn't actually dead, and Alex has to strangle him
  • Noodle Incident: Whatever was in Maureen's rap sheet, it was enough to make Caputo cringe.
  • Oh, Crap!: Caputo, when he realizes that Judy King has been switched over to his prison.
  • Odd Friendship: Luschek strikes one up with Judy King.
  • Powder Keg Crowd: Aleida lampshading how overcrowded the prison cafeteria is now.
Aleida: It's sardine time, bitches. We're a for-profit prison now. We ain't people no more. We're bulk items.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Piper thinks everyone respects and/or fears her at the start of the episode, before Chang tells her she's just full of hot air and that no one cares. Later she attempts to intimidate another inmate into bunking in the upper instead of the lower bed in an obvious attempt to posture in front of someone, but Red talks her down without much effort. By the end of the episode she does get respect, but only by a new inmate who thinks Piper is a top dog in prison due to Flaca lying to her, clearly to get back at Piper for last season.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Suzanne runs right the hell away from Maureen when it turns out she's crazier than she is!
Suzanne: I don't want to do this any more! (Runs away)
  • Shout-Out: Kubra's hitman's cellphone ringtone is "Bad Day" by Richard Powdter.
    • Maureen compares one of the female buttocks in Caputo's computer porn to "a Kardashian".
    • The song that plays over Alex and Lolly despising of the body is "Last Resort" by Papa Roach.
  • Suspiciously Apropos Music: The song "Last Resort" by Papa Roach plays out as the prison fame goes to Piper's head and Alex, Lolly and another inmate have to cut up her hitman's dead body in pieces.
  • Tampering with Food and Drink: Luschek steals one of Caputo's cookies and then purposely farts on the rest.
  • Take That!: After Lolly kills the guard and sends a pic of "dead" Alex she refers to a photo of a dead woman's breasts as "Cosby dream porn."
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Chang when she sees how over crowded the prison is with 226 inmates.
    Chang: Motherfucker.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Subverted, and rather hilariously. First, Piper struts through the empty prison, where no one notices she's now a thug. Then the few remaining guards suit up in riot gear...only for the real riot team from Max to show up.
  • Too Much Information: The girls have this reaction to Lorna consummating her marriage to Vinnie.
  • Victoria's Secret Compartment: Alex to Lolly in an infamous hilarious example.
Alex: I have a cellphone between my tits and keys in my twat. You think now is really the best time to socialize?
  • Visual Innuendo:
    • One of the riot guards looks like she's about to fellate another Litchfield riot guard as she's fixing his pants.
    • One of the Litchfield riot guards is getting his pants pulled by another male guard with a lot of grunting and pulling.
    • And one of the other Litchfield riot guard holds a whacking stick weapon between his legs long enough for the camera to linger the close-up shot.
  • You Didn't See That: Caputo tells Maureen to forget about the porn on his computer when she's in his office.
