Recap / Orange Is the New Black S03E13 "Trust No Bitch"

Go To

Miracles and conversions occur, but Piper and Caputo know that some situations can't be dealt with through spiritual means.

This episode provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Acquired Situational Narcissism: Piper immediately develops this after getting her lover Stella sent to MAX for stealing her money. And it only gets worst from there.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Instead of just one character's flashbacks, a variety of them are shown. Almost all of them involve the characters' experiences with religion and they're all set during their childhood, varying from Cindy being around six or seven years old, to Janae being in her mid to late teens.
    • Brook's childhood involved her mom being a Tiger Mom. She tells Brook that there is no heaven or hell and that she'll only be remembered for her accomplishments.
    • Morello's flashback involves the first time she received communion at church.
    • Gloria's flashback involves finding out that she is having a son and not a daughter, most likely due to Tia's Santeria magic.
    • Boo's flashback involves her being shocked by a microwave plug, realizing that there is no God.
    • Janae's flashback shows that her parents are Muslim and that her father disapproves of her exposing her skin running track.
    • Black Cindy's flashback shows that her father was very much a fire and brimstone preacher who gave her hell at the dinner table for sneaking some food in the middle of prayer.
    • Healy's flashback involves him running to church due to something involving his crazy mother. He then meets a homeless bum he thinks is Jesus...until he throws up and passes out on top of poor Healy.
  • Bittersweet Ending: While many of the prisoners are frolicking at the lake due to the wide open fence, the episode ends with all the veteran COs quitting and the prison getting packed with as many new inmates as possible (at least two full busloads).
  • Book Ends: Just as the series began with Piper self-surrendering to Litchfield, one of the scenes involves Judy King looking to self-surrender at Litchfield.
  • Chekhov's Gun: During Piper's search for a cellphone, she had found cigarettes, lighters, joints, even a shiv made out of Jolly Ranchers. Even the screwdriver from season 1 is slipped in!
  • Cliffhanger: The last scene involving Alex has her cornered by Kubra's assassin blended in as a CO.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Young Morello is shown to be more concerned with her communion dress than actually taking communion, showing she believes more in the glitz of religion than religion itself.
  • Destructo-Nookie: While consummating their wedding night, Morello and Vince have sex so rough, that a bag of chips falls loose from the vending machine.
  • Face Palm: Norma does this during her latest group gathering.
  • Frame-Up: Piper frames Stella by placing several objects (lighter, marijuana cigarettes, cigarettes, jolly ranchers shiv, screwdriver, ect.) in her bunk and ratting her out to the police.
  • Get Out!: Norma has to point out to Leanne that she's not welcome in her bunk anymore after all of her fuck-ups.
  • Longing Look: Healey and Red share one during Morello and Vince's wedding vows.
  • Making Love in All the Wrong Places: Morello and Vince consummate their marriage by having sex against a vending machine.
  • Oh, Crap!: Alex, when she is cornered by the assassin Kubra sent after her.
  • Put on a Bus to Hell: Due to Piper sneaking in contraband in Stella's bunk, Stella is sent up to Max just hours before she's about to be released.
  • Properly Paranoid: Alex is proven right when it turns out one of the new COs is the same assassin that works for Kubra.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Most of the prison staff leaves after Caputo is given quite the pay raise by the corporation that owns the prison. Luschek also has this reaction when all the prisoners start running for the open fence.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Soundtrack Dissonance: Foreigner's "I Want To Know What Love Is" plays through to the end credits as the new inmates arrive and overcrowd Litchfield.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Bell allows Morello and her new husband, Vinnie, to consummate their marriage against the vending machine, which knocks a bag of chips loose!
  • Tattooed Crook: Piper becomes this first with the "Trust No Bitch" tattoo Stella gives her, then an infinity symbol that she gives herself.
  • Title Drop: The title comes from the white ink tattoo that Stella draws onto Piper.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Poussey gives one to Norma and her group for not helping Soso.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: As a child, Morello refuses to eat a communion wafer in church because she believed it would make her fat.
  • Vomit Chain Reaction: Poussey gets one of these after having to force Brook to throw up the pills, calling it “sympathetic vomitting.”
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: Poussey, unluckily, has to be the one to stick her fingers down Brook's throat to get her to puke up the pills she OD'ed on. Happens again in Healy's flashback with the homeless bum who looks like Jesus passing out on top of him.
