The Octonauts use the recently created GUP-Z, (Z1, Z2, Z3, Z4, Z5, Mega Gup Z, and Gup Z Mantis Shrimp Mode), to save many creatures, including an Omura's whale, some chinstrap penguins, and many more creatures from various volcanoes and one giant volcano.
The episode has the following tropes:
- Calling Your Attacks: Done when the GUP-Z is in 'Mantis Shrimp Mode'.Peso: Hammer claw, go!!!
- Call to Agriculture: Tunip and the Vegimals are farming when lava begin oozing and the volcanoes are about to erupt so they have to work fast and rescue the sea creatures in danger there.
- The Cameo: The Crab and the Urchin appear a few times in the movie and Tunip rescues them with the GUP-Z5.
- Chekhov's Volcano: The Ring of Fire, itself.
- Climactic Volcano Back Drop: Happens near the end.
- Coconut Superpowers: Happens literally when the Coconut Crabs use their coconuts to lure the Omura's whale, with the GUP-Z4 with Shellington and Dashi in tow off the deserted island.
- Cool Boat: This movie marks the debut of the GUP-Z.
- Deserted Island: Shellington and Dashi get stranded there where they discover an Omura's whale after a giant wave hits them, but thanks to their new friends the Coconut Crabs, they managed to return underwater.
- Don't Celebrate Just Yet: After the GUP-Z rescues all the animals outside the volcano, Dashi happily exclaimed that they made it, before sounding worried as she warned that they must quickly leave, as the volcano was about to erupt. But just as Barnacles declared that they should do so, Peso interrupted the captain to tell him that the former saw creatures inside the volcano.
- Earn Your Happy Ending: Well, the sea creatures the Octonauts have rescued are relocated to another area and the Chinstrap penguins have found a new island whom Tunip dubs as 'Vegitoa'.
- "Everybody Laughs" Ending: This happens in some episodes of the show. Here, the movie special ends with the Octonauts laughing when the Vegimals dance to Captain Barnacles' training video about Octo-Aerobics.
- How Do I Shot Web?: Happens to Professor Inkling when he gets put in charge of the Octopod while Peso and Barnacles visit the Chinstrap penguins (Peso's relatives). He eventually learns to stay calm like Dashi and then finds the button that launches the life rafts. Later on, he learns to steer the Octopod to pick up the rest of the Octonauts due to the Chinstrap penguins' eggs hatching in the Launch Bay.
- House Fire: Subverted when Kwazii and Tweak witness a fire spreading in the upper level of the Octo Repair Station and they rescue themselves by escaping to the bottom via an Octo-Chute, landing in the compost room at the bottom level.
- Humongous Mecha: The GUP-Z in 'Mantis Shrimp Mode', only for a limited battery, according to Tweak.
- Instructional Film: Used as a Running Gag.
- Morning Routine: Each Octonaut does this near the beginning.
- No Time to Explain: Happens several times throughout the movie special.
- Opening the Flood Gates: During the tsunami, a door in the Octo Repair Station opens, flooding it.
- Running Gag: Someone turns on one of Captain Barnacles' training videos, of course.
- Rising Water, Rising Tension: Kwazii and Tweak struggle to escape a flood that inadvertently went into the Octo Repair Station.
- That Was Not a Dream: After Captain Barnacles asks the crew if they had slept well the previous night, Kwazii tells everyone about his strange dream of eating seventeen kelp cakes, and felt full, before burping, causing him to realize Exactly What It Says on the Tin.
- Tour Guide Gag: Inverted with Kwazii who asks many questions as Tweak takes him on a tour through the Octo-Repair Station.
- Trailers Always Spoil: All the English and Chinese trailers have the GUP-Z in "Mantis Shrimp Mode" appearing.
- Transformation Sequence: This is done in an Animesque style with the GUP-Z twice: the first occurs when all five parts merge together into one MEGA-GUP and the second when the GUP-Z changes into 'Mantis Shrimp Mode'.
- We Work Well Together: The moral of this movie. The Omura's even said this several times throughout the story and then the Octonauts said it towards the end of the movie after the Omura's whale thanks them and right before Inkling picks them up with the Octopod.
