Recap / OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes S1E20 "Everbody Likes Rad?"

Go To

When Rad posts a video that goes viral, he tries to milk his fifteen minutes of fame.

Tropes:

  • Amusing Alien: Deconstructed; Rad's becomes famous entirely because people thought his alien interjection "Blorp!" is funny, not because of any humor he puts works into. When he's cast in a movie, he finds out he's been pigeonholed it's what basically science-fictional Uncle Tomfoolery.
  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • Rad's original video. He's about to launch a rocket when he falls through the roof, and the phone completely misses the rocket taking off.
    • While talking to Brandon, A Real Magic Skeleton and Drupe, Rad leans against a garbage can, which is gradually slipping. Just as he's about to fall flat on his face, a passing tiny Pteranodon lays an egg on his face.
    • Enid talks about another viral video about a guy bungee jumping off a bridge. Rather than being hurt by the fall, he gets burned by a Shoulder-Sized Dragon.
  • Celebrity Is Overrated: Rad becomes famous, but people only like him for one line, not any of the work he put into his video.
  • Continuity Nod: In "Presenting Joe Cuppa", Enid said her preferred form of humor is physical. Sure enough, she's the only one shown to like Rad's video for the slapstick he intended, not just because he said "Blorp!"
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?:
    • Rad gets cast in a (supposedly) big Hollywood movie, but finds he's been typecast as a one-dimensional stereotype—because he's an alien.
    • Rad being mobbed by fans plays out as a Zombie Apocalypse.
  • Foreshadowing: Rad begins the episode by explaining that he's OK with people laughing at a video where he gets hurt because "it's [his] joke". When the first feedback he gets besides his close friends is about how funny him saying "Blorp!" was, not any of the thing he was talking about earlier, it's an early hint that he's on the fast-track to disillusionment.
  • Funny Background Event: After Enid tells the story of the guy who had to set himself on fire because of his viral video, that guy can be seen behind K.O., engulfed in flames.
  • Inherently Funny Words: Most people find Rad saying "Blorp!" hilarious, no matter what's actually happening. Since it's apparently just a regular interjection on Planet X, Rad doesn't get why anyone cares, and wishes people would appreciate the work he puts into his jokes. The line itself is played ad nauseum in the background of several scenes just to take out any possible amusement for the audience.
  • Instant Web Hit: Rad's video makes him a celebrity overnight.
  • Man on Fire: Enid tells K.O. the story of a man who was shooting video of himself bungee jumping when he gets set on fire by a dragon. People liked that part of the video so much that the guy had to set himself on fire to satisfy his fans.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: The dragon who burns a man in the viral video Enid describes is the size of a small bird, but pretty much looks like a standard European dragon from mythology.
  • Questioning Title?: The title ends with a question mark because Rad's video makes him famous, but feels that everyone appreciation of him is shallow.
  • Shoulder-Sized Dragon: A tiny dragon appears in another viral video, setting a bungee-jumper on fire.
  • Shout-Out: One of the variations of the word "Blorp" that Rad is given to say is "Meep Morp".
  • Take Me to Your Leader: Rad was already resenting the fact that his character was a stereotypical alien whose lines were variations of "Blorp!", but it was seeing the line "Blorp me to your leader" that was the last straw.
  • Take That!: When Rad is recast in a film, everyone cringes at his replacement, who sounds quite a lot like Jar-Jar Binks.
