Lunella finds herself without a date on the night of a school dance

  • An Aesop: It's not right to ask someone out just because you're afraid of looking lame for being single. Both people need to be comfortable with taking their relationship in that direction.
  • Alone Among the Couples: Lunella finds herself the only one without a date for the school dance. She at first tries to dance by herself, but the sight of everyone slow dancing with their dates makes her cry and hide in the bathroom.
  • Brick Joke: Marvin laments how the Mothmen have a habit of abducting him and subjected to space-leech related torture while being held as a hostage. When they catch up to him, they bring a canister of space-leeches.
  • Clone Degeneration: Lunella at first tries to make a date for the dance by cloning Bobby the Myth, but the clone quickly devolves into a Gonk blob. Doesn't stop fans from mistaking it for the real Bobby in the closing credits scene.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Even though he wanted to go to the dance with Lunella, Eduardo was already asked. He spends most of it looking at her longingly, and reacts with barely disguised envy whenever Marvin is brought up.
  • Fake Relationship: Lunella tries to get Marvin to pretend to be her date, trying to pass it off as an act that'll help him hide out from the moth aliens chasing him. She learns at the end that a few other students also faked relationships so they wouldn't be left single at the dance. They all feel that they should just enjoy being kids, only seeking a relationship when they finally feel comfortable enough to do it.
  • Foregone Conclusion: Devil already knows that Lunella's plan to use Marvin as her fake date will backfire. It doesn't take long for the Mothmen to track Marvin down.
  • Furry Reminder: Like Earth moths, the Mothmen are sensitive to light. They use this to track down Marvin and Lunella later exploits this to distract them and help him.
  • Homage: to Carrie when the Mothman in charge cries out "They're all gonna laugh at me!" when Moon Girl and Kid Kree dump punch all over him.
  • Let's Just Be Friends: Realizing how bad she messed up, and how uncomfortable she made herself and Marvin to try and form a date, they agree to just be friends for the time being.
  • Moth Menace: The villains of the episode are giant alien moth soldiers known as Zargarians, or simply Mothmen.
  • Secret Identity Change Trick: When she and Marvin resolve to fight off the moth aliens as Moon Girl and Kid Kree, Lunella loudly signals to Casey that she's going to go get them, leading her to shut off the lights so they can suit up. Funnily enough, their stilted acting is illustrated by the two of them turning into muppets.
  • Ship Tease: Eduardo has an extended romantic fantasy about dating Lunella when she asks him to the dance, but has to turn her down because he was already asked. She tries to fake a relationship with Marvin, and there do appear to be sparks, but neither of them are ready to pursue an actual relationship.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The episode's title is taken from the Generation X single of the same name.
    • The first of a couple prominent ones to Sailor Moon. When Lunella asks out Eduardo (in desperation), a fantasy sequence follows of them dressed as Tuxedo Mask and Princess Serenity.
    • Eduardo makes the memetic disgust face people use to react to Excalibur when Marvin is brought up at one point.
    • During their Secret Identity Change Trick, Lunella, and Casey resemble Jim Henson styled Muppets.
  • Tempting Fate:
    • Devil convinces Lunella to just enjoy herself without having to worry about other couples, but the moment she spots more during the dance, she leaves in tears, feeling out of place.
    • When Marvin arrives to ask for Lunella's help to hide him from the Mothmen, she takes advantage of the situation and has him pose as her date. Devil warns her how bad an idea this is and, soon enough, the Mothmen crash the dance.
  • Queer Establishing Moment:
    • Twice in just one scene: when Lunella searches one of the school hallways for a date, the first person she considers going out with is a girl. Unfortunately, that girl ends up getting a date from a boy before Lunella could ask her out. Immediately after that, she considers a guy, only to find that he’s going out with Anand (and with a kiss to boot!).
    • When the dance begins, we see Fawzia’s date turn out to be a girl.
