Recap / Moon Girl And Devil Dinosaur 2023 S 2 E 11 Roller Jam

Go To

A former friend of Pops’ rolls back into town and their rivalry threatens to ruin a celebration of skating.

  • An Aesop: It's always best to talk out your issues and form a solution, especially when those issues happened a long time ago. Allowing them to bottle up and resort to petty and violent squabbles can ruin the vibe for those around you.
  • Accidental Aiming Skills: While Brian Glory is trying to challenge Moon Girl a second time, she is trying to get Pops and Vernell to make up. As the two start fighting again, Moon Girl tries to appease them by offering to let them use her bubble gun; as she does, she accidentally fires and hits Brian, unaware he was even there.
  • Attention Whore: Brian Glory is an athlete that has excelled to the top of every wheeled activity there is and challenged Lunella to see who is the better skater. When he's snubbed, he returns as Blue Streak to crash the Roller Jam and prove himself the best skater of all, shouting "Me, me, me!"
  • Brick Joke: Casey makes a cover-up about Lunella building a regenerative, cryogenic, cooling tower while Moon Girl is helping in Roller Jam. In the end, Lu comes back and...
Lunella: I was... building a regenerative, cryogenic, cooling tower.
    Casey: That's a real thing?!
  • Call-Back:
    • Lunella tries to help Pops and Vernell talk about why they are fighting in the first place so they can end their feud, same as how and she Casey fought while retrieving an experimental bomb from Devil before talking things out.
    • Brian Glory got his Blue Streak costume from the same garage sale that Kat Swan got her dog-controlling whistle. The camera quickly pans over her to him in the flashback detailing this.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Vernell gets invited to Roller Jam because Lunella just invited everyone in her grandfather's address book, not noticing all the "do not talk to this person ever" notes in red ink next to Vernell's information. Because for some reason she was fighting a tentacle monster and doing the invitations at the same time.
  • Homage: to TRON when Brian shows up as Blue Streak. Pops and Vernell have gold and orange tracer lines to Brian's blue and Lunella's pink.
  • It's All About Me: Brian's goal is to prove he is the greatest skater. Once he barges into Roller Jam to make this known and endanger everyone, Pops and Vernell get a wakeup call that their feud almost did the same thing.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Brian Glory ends up serving as a walking reference to Sonic the Hedgehog. Ranging from assuming the iconic Sonic Adventure title pose, his whole gimmick being going fast and styling in blue, and taking up the name "Blue Streak" for when he crashes the Roller Jam in his new costume.
    • A Star Butterfly look-alike can be seen in the crowd at Roller Jam, alongside someone dressed like Monkey D. Luffy.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: Pops and Vernell's constant petty sniping over the disagreement in their past.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Pops and Vernell used to be best friends and champions of the feeling of community Roller Jam promoted. When Vernell fell during a big performance, and Pops went on without him, Vernell felt abandoned and left. They had since formed their own roller rinks in opposite sides of the US.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Pops and Vernell's feud escalates to the point where Roller Jam is suffering a negative vibe. Moon Girl tells them that enough is enough because the event is about the community coming together through unity instead of competition.
