"Oni-Chan. I am Hawk Moth. I'm giving you the power to track down Lila Rossi and make sure she never gets close to your loved one ever again. Adrien Agreste is way too innocent to be wary of her. Of course, she'll persuade Ladybug and Cat Noir to stop you from accomplishing your duty. You must therefore bring me their Miraculous to punish them for their naïveté!"
Hawk Moth

Ladybug and Cat Noir challenge Kagami, now Oni-Chan. Jealous of Lila, she wants to stop her from getting close to Adrien... Forever!

Tropes:

  • Badass Normal: Kagami slices down a tree in one swing. With a bamboo sword. And this is before she gets Akumatized.
  • Blatant Lies: As usual, 99% of the things that come out of Lila's mouth.
  • Bridal Carry: Cat Noir with Kagami.
  • …But He Sounds Handsome: Inverted. Cat Noir complains about how so many girls keep falling for Adrien and asserts that he's better, which is, of course, ironic enough that Cat Noir represents his inner and truer personality. He's promptly beaten up by Oni-Chan for the insinuation.
  • Call-Back:
    • Tikki stops Marinette from transforming into Ladybug when she became frustrated over Lila while in a pile of trash bins, preventing a repeat performance of "Volpina".
    • Kagami still has the rose Adrien gifted her in "Frozer".
    • Gabriel brings up that Natalie has been duped by Adrien’s schoolmates before after learning that Lila tricked her way into the mansion while he wasn’t looking.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Lila's pursuit of Adrien begins to take on new levels of self-centered possessiveness as she shows a level of disregard for Adrien's personal boundaries that makes the worst of Marinette's Stalker with a Crush tendencies look downright innocent by comparison. She stages a photo of her kissing Adrien and sends it to everyone on her contacts list (which apparently somehow includes Nathalie) for no other reason than she found pictures of Kagami and Ladybug in his room.
    • And, likely due to her Akumatization, Oni-Chan manages to go even further with it, gushing about Adrien's alleged perfection and refusing to stop attacking Lila until she agrees to stay away from Adrien.
  • Consummate Liar: Lila's habitual lying is shown to be so ingrained that she apparently can't help trying to lie to people who already know she's lying.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Another rare episode where Adrien has more focus than Marinette, to the point his transformation is the only one shown.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: When Gabriel learns that Lila has been in his house without his knowing, he doesn't waste any time and creates a supervillain to kill her.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: When you get down to it, the main conflict is about one Clingy Jealous Girl attacking the other Clingy Jealous Girl over a boy. Sure, one is a Consummate Liar who manipulated Adrien and broadcasted the façade of being his girlfriend on social media, this being the catalyst for the other to be corrupted into a supervillain, but the trope is still there in spirit. Throw in Ladybug and you have three girls crushing on Adrien out for each other's throats in a spinning wheel, Lila even going so far as to manipulate things with the hope of either Ladybug or Oni-Chan to take each other out to thin out the competition.
  • Dramatic Irony:
    • As stated above, Oni-Chan adamantly defends Adrien's superiority to Cat Noir.
      • Even better, Kagami's previous Akumatized form Riposte was dead-set on killing Adrien, her Akumatization fueled by hatred over her defeat against Adrien. As Oni-Chan, she is dead-set on killing Lila because she assumes that they are dating, her murderous goal motivated by her affection for Adrien.
    • Gabriel recruits Lila under the pretense of protecting Adrien from bad influences. Lila is unaware that Gabriel originally saw her as such a bad influence he created a supervillain to assassinate her (and most likely still does, it's just that now he also sees her as useful).
  • Entitled to Have You: Lila, Kagami, and to a lesser extent Marinette, all towards Adrien.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Lila refrains from taking pictures of Marinette after she fell into the trash bins and posting them online because it would be "too easy."
  • Everyone Has Standards: Lila, wanting to adore everything about Adrien, is disgusted at Plagg's stash of Camembert.
  • Evil Is Petty: Upon seeing the fencing team photo with Adrien and Kagami close to each other and then seeing Ladybug's photo, Lila immediately talks Adrien into a selfie with her kissing his cheek and then sending the selfie out to a number of contacts, which somehow include Gabriel and Kagami, which was apparently enough to break the latter's heart and send her into tears and vulnerable enough to be Akumatized.
  • Evil Versus Evil: The first part of Oni-Chan's rampage has her targeting Lila.
  • Heroic Bystander: Tom Dupain tries to be this when Oni-Chan shows up looking for Lila. It doesn't work.
  • Hero Stole My Bike: When following Lila and Adrien, Marinette "borrows" a bike from Juleka, who is left standing on the sidewalk utterly baffled, holding Marinette's backpack. At least since she knows the owner, we can assume Marinette returned it later.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard:
    • Oni-Chan snatches the rope summoned by Lucky Charm out of the air as soon as it appears and ties Ladybug up with it, making her the first villain to use Ladybug's own Lucky Charm against her. However...
    • The bound Ladybug later turns Oni-Chan's own power against her, forcing her to swap places with her and making her the one tied up. This was most likely the intended use of the Lucky Charm all along.
  • In Love with Your Carnage: When Lila effortlessly manipulates the supervillain out for her head into not only agreeing to leave her alone, but killing Ladybug on her behalf, Hawk Moth absolutely gushes at her display of pure malevolence, and immediately wants to team up with her.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: As Lila drags Adrien off to go to his house, Marinette scoffs that there's no way Adrien's hulking bodyguard will allow it only to watch in astonishment as he does just that.
  • Irony: The last time Kagami was Akumatized she tried to slice Adrien in half. This time she vows to protect him and declares her undying love.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Lila deduces that Gabriel's parenting has led Adrien to become more isolated and lonely.
  • Knight Templar Parent: Evidence seems to indicate that Hawk Moth's primary goal in this episode is not the heroes' Miraculous, but to have Lila bumped off because she's a bad influence on Adrien. For once, he doesn't raise any complaints when his Akumatized minion prioritizes their own revenge over getting him the Miraculous, and his recruitment speech to Kagami even seems to encourage this behaviour, only mentioning the Miraculous in the context of "the heroes are going to show up anyway, so you might as well give it a shot". Of course, when Lila impresses him with her capability for evil, he quickly changes his tune and now sees her as a valuable potential ally.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: All of Lila's deceit and lies catch up to her in many ways: initially angering Gabriel enough to want to send an Akumatized villain specifically to deal with her; said villain is Kagami, who as Oni-Chan hunts her down non-stop for her deception; finally Adrien/Cat Noir is fully disgusted with her actions and realizes she won't change at all, first telling her off as Cat and then also as Adrien. All Lila can do is stare in shock and disbelief once all is said and done.
    • Subverted in the end when she impressed Gabriel Agreste so much that he makes an alliance with her.
  • Love Interest:
    • This episode reveals that Kagami has a genuine crush on Adrien. This also serves as an Internal Reveal for Adrien himself via his alter-ego.
    • At the end, Adrien flirts with Kagami after their fencing match. He says he wants to be worthy of her, a slight echo of her words as Oni-Chan: "...he's the only one worthy of me, the only one I... will... ever.. love!"
    • When Lila declares her love to Adrien, her horn does not react.
  • Loves My Alter Ego: The first thing Kagami does after her new Akumatization is find Adrien, give him a Declaration of Protection and go after Lila. When Cat Noir jokes with Oni-Chan about how much better he is in comparison to Adrien, the infuriated Oni-Chan says he'll never be as perfect as Adrien and sends him flying into a nearby billboard (which, of course, is an ad for Adrien the Fragrance).
Cat Noir: [to the Adrien billboard] What are you smiling about?!
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Before this episode, Adrien, while aware of her Consummate Liar tendencies, was still sympathetic to Lila. Lila's actions in this episode cause him to realize what a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing she is. Of course, the Pinocchio Nose Oni-Chan gave Lila gave her away everytime she lied and revealed her deceptions. In the end it was Hawk Moth who rattened her and did her and also himself a great disservice.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Aside from frequently getting as close to Adrien as possible, Lila also snoops around his room and touches his personal belongings, from finding Plagg's stash of Camembert to Adrien's photos of Kagami and the fencing team and Ladybug.
  • Parental Neglect: It is clear that Lila doesn't get to see her mother very often and that she suffers greatly because of it.
Benigna Rossi: Hi, darling. Your breakfast is on the table, your lunch is in a bag, and your dinner is in the fridge. I'll be home late tonight again, but I'll do my best to be there this weekend.
  • Pinocchio Nose: Oni-Chan gives Lila a horn that grows whenever she lies.
  • Poke the Poodle: Lila is more than a little bit amused when she sees Marinette inside a pile of trash bins and doesn't waste the chance to taunt her. Also doubles as a very rare genuine Pet the Dog moment for her when she declines the opportunity to publicly humiliate her over it.
Lila: I could take a photo right now and post it online, but that would be too easy.
  • Punny Name: Oni are ogre-like monsters from Japanese mythology, while "-chan" is a diminutive suffix typically applied to girls. It also sounds like "Oniichan", a term for addressing an older brother.
  • Save the Villain: Downplayed, as Ladybug and Cat Noir don't actually know how evil Lila really is, but they still protect her from Oni-Chan. Even after she fakes a leg injury to try and get Ladybug killed, Cat still protects her, albeit while calling her out on her dishonesty.
  • Sinister Surveillance: Since it is unlikely that Lila had Gabriel's email address, he most likely obtained his copy of her selfie by covert means, like tapping Adrien's phone once he knew there had been an intruder.
  • Something about a Rose: The akumatized item is Kagami's rose from Adrien, pressed and preserved as a keepsake of her feelings for him. This extends to Oni-Chan's motif, from her symbol when someone receives her message on their phone to the style of her bokken.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Marinette goes further than ever before, commandeering (and crashing) Juleka's bike, and building a tower of trash bins to scale the Agreste Mansion wall and spy on Adrien.
  • Telephone Teleport: Oni-Chan's power is a variant. She can switch places with people who receive her message on their cell phones which the horn she gave Lila transmits.
  • Tracking Spell: The horn that Oni-Chan puts on Lila's forehead allows Oni-Chan to teleport to her instantly, switching places with a person nearby when they open a text message from the Akuma victim (the phone number is supplied by magic).
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Lila, to the surprise of no one.
  • Villain Team-Up: At the end of the episode, Gabriel and Lila make an official alliance, despite the latter not knowing that he is Hawk Moth.
  • Villainous Crush:
    • Oni-Chan swears a Declaration of Protection to Adrien before going after Lila for her deceit. Ironically enough, when Cat Noir jokes about how he's better than Adrien, Oni-Chan proceeds to pummel him before declaring how Adrien is "perfection incarnate" and that there's no other man she'll ever love than him.
    • Lila states that she loves Adrien while still under the Pinocchio Nose curse and it doesn't react at all. Which at the very least means she believes her feelings are genuine. However, Lila also tells the truth when she says the only thing that would make her give up Adrien is getting rid of Ladybug...
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: She's definetly not his girlfriend per se, but as Oni-Chan, Kagami acts like that and she's unwavering about protecting Adrien from Lila. The methods are anything but suitable, but she's right about Lila being bad news.
  • Woman Scorned: When Kagami sees Lila's picture of her with Adrien, she is furious enough to slice a few trees, even severing one completely, with a simple bokken to the point that the sword starts falling apart. Granted, the trees were small and thin, but Kagami's fury is not to be trifled with.
  • Would Hurt a Child: While previous episodes have established that Hawk Moth isn't averse to Akumatizing children or having them become collateral damage to his Akuma victims, this episode takes it to a new level by having him create a supervillain specifically to murder the teenaged Lila.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Lila pretends that her ankle is twisted to get Cat Noir to take her away from Ladybug's battle with Onichan. Cat is not impressed when the deception is revealed.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Oni-Chan, coming from the world of martial arts, saw Ladybug summon a binding weapon and chose to grab it and use it against her. She didn't realize it was meant to be a piece of a creative solution and so she ended up trapping herself.
