Recap / Maya And The Three Chapter 3 The Rooster

Go To

Maya makes it to Luna Island and sets out to find the Rooster Wizard, the first of her prophesied allies.

Tropes present in the episode:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Cipactli stifles a giggle when Maya mocks Cabrakan as "the god of terrible husbands".
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Rico was a street rat who was accepted by the Gran Brujo into the Academy due to his extraordinary natural affinity for Peasant Magic. Unfortunately, this makes the other students and adults alike shun him for being unable to use "proper magic".
  • Animal Motifs: Luna Island is all about roosters. Several seen semi-flying around, one is perched on the Gran Bruja's back, and their legendary hero is called the Rooster Wizard.
  • Bait-and-Switch Compassion: As Cabrakan is gearing up to sacrifice Maya:
Cipactli: Do not sacrifice this child.
Maya: Listen to her, she's making a solid argument!
Cipactli: Lord Mictlan is too powerful, we cannot hope to defeat him. Let's bring her to him, like. We. Planned!
Maya: What? No, bad argument! Bad!
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Cipactli lets Maya go instead of letting Cabrakan sacrifice her. In return, Maya and Rico come back to free Cipactli from a bunch of boulders. Cipactli is grateful and vows to protect Maya from Lord Mictlan when the times comes.
  • Big "NO!": The Gran Bruja's response to Maya's demands.
Gran Bruja: So will I, the Gran Bruja, join your misguided quest? NOOOOO!!
  • Both Sides Have a Point: Shockingly, Cipactli and Cabrakan on the subject for sacrificing Maya for themselves. On top of it generally being an atrocious thing to do, Cipactli cites the risk of Mictlan killing them for insubordination if it fails. A ’’perfectly reasonable’’ argument given what we’ve seen of Mictlan. However, Cabrakan citing Mictlan’s mistreatment of them and his desire to protect themselves against him makes his motive a little more understandable.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: The one-legged beggar Maya encounters early on turns out to be Rico, the former Gran Brujo's protegé and the only wizard on the island who can use the powerful Peasant Magic.
  • Cool Old Guy: The Gran Brujo is a cheerful and upbeat old man who's nothing but encouraging to his students, especially to the timid young Rico.
  • Creepy Child: The two kids Maya, Rico and Chiapa encounter in the woods. They sound like adults, have skull tattoos on their faces and pointy teeth, and move like something out of a horror film. Turns out they're two gods in disguise: Cabrakan and Cipactli.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: Peasant Magic, a powerful type of magic that can be used without a wand but is thought to be impossible to control. When Rico unleashed it as a child, he destroyed the Academy and would've taken out more of the island if not for the Gran Brujo containing the blast.
  • Dare to Be Badass: The Gran Bruja hates Rico's guts, but her final words to him are a challenge to prove her wrong by joining Maya's quest and showing her that her father was right to have so much faith in him.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Rico was an orphan who was accepted into the Luca Island Academy after demonstrating his affinity for Peasant Magic, a feat which also earned him the scorn of the adults and the other students. It's implied that the Gran Brujo was the only one who even believed in Rico, and he gave his life to protect the boy from a wild spell Rico cast after being shamed and humiliated during a talent show in the Academy.
  • Dying Wish: The Gran Brujo used his last breath to ask his daughter and Rico to look after one another. After he died, the Gran Bruja immediately went against her father's wish and exiled Rico.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Cabrakan was more than willing to kill Maya for his own gain, but also assured the girl he'd give her a quick and painless death.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: It's implied that the Gran Bruja was jealous of the trust and affection her father, the Gran Brujo, had for young Rico, as well as the fact that he gave his staff, Estefan, to Rico instead of her. This jealousy is further implied to be one of the reasons she went against her father's Dying Wish and exiled the boy immediately after her father's death.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Cabrakan has a very short fuse, especially if someone starts insinuating that he isn't strong. Maya uses it to anger him enough to cause an earthquake and make a bunch of boulders fall on him.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: The Gran Brujo contained Rico's outburst of Peasant Magic inside the Academy and protected Rico from the backlash of his wild spell, at the cost of his life.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Cabrakan is defeated by the earthquake he caused in a fit of rage after Maya taunted him that he's not as strong as the other gods.
  • Inept Mage: Rico is believed to be this by every other wizard in Luna Island. In truth, he's just timid and scared of his power; with Maya's encouragement, he taps into his true power and helps her defeat two powerful gods.
  • Instant Costume Change: Rico changes from his peasant clothes to a fancy wizard outfit with a flourish of his hand.
  • It's Quiet… Too Quiet: Maya is concerned by the lack of guards on the borders of the Jungle Kingdom. Then she and Rico turn around and notice a bajillion of guards hiding in the trees, aiming their dart guns at them.
  • A Minor Kidroduction: The episode starts with Rico as a little boy about to take part in a talent show in the Luna Island Academy. When he fails to use proper magic to make his toad disappear, the crowd's jeering leads him to snap his wand and tap into Peasant Magic, destroying the Academy and accidentally killing his mentor, the Gran Brujo. The Gran Bruja exiles him on the spot, and he's been living as an outcast ever since.
  • No Sense of Direction: In Maya's words, "I always know where I'm going. But sometimes when I get there, it's somewhere else."
  • Obfuscating Disability: Rico pretends to be a one-legged beggar. The ruse is exposed when Maya accidentally knocks him down and his hidden leg is exposed.
  • Offscreen Teleportation: Maya walks past the one-legged beggar on a narrow corridor, yet he somehow appears next to her outside the door. It's her first hint that the "beggar" is more than he appears to be.
  • Passed-Over Promotion: The dying Gran Brujo passes his staff, Estefan, to Rico instead of his own daughter. This is one of the reasons the Gran Bruja hates Rico.
  • Screams Like a Little Girl: Rico lets out a high-pitch screech when he's surprised by Maya.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: The Gran Bruja makes her contempt for the Teca's arrogance very clear:
Gran Bruja: You Tecas, you thought you knew the meaning of the Prophecy. You were wrong! So now, you come to my kingdom, disrespect me, and demand that I join your ridiculous quest to save the world.
    Maya: Yes, but—
Gran Bruja: A world made unsafe by your father's indescretion and your family's declaration of war on the God of War. Well, guess what? Lord Mictlan is guaranteed to be better at war than you because he is the God Of War'. Child, this may come as a shock to you, but Luna Island does not exist solely to clean up Teca's messes.
  • Trauma Button: Rico is reluctant to revisit the Luna Island Academy, the site of the greatest tragedy of his life. It takes Maya sincerely asking for his help for him to agree.
  • Women Are Wiser: Unlike Cabrakan, Cipactli is on the fence of sacrificing Maya for themselves on account of Mictlan killing them if it fails. She also constantly chides her husband for his impulsivity and temper.
