Recap / Maya And The Three Chapter 4 The Skull

Go To

Maya and Rico reach Skull Kingdom looking for the Skull Archer, the second of Maya's prophesied allies.

  • Albinos Are Freaks: Chimi was cast out of her tribe shortly after her birth for being an albino. The Skull people even call her "el monstruo blanco" (the white monster) due to her albinism, and consider her existence to be a curse bestowed upon them by the gods.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Chimi was ostracized since birth for being an albino. The Skull people are terrified of the mere mention of her, although the Widow Queen has made several attempts to ask for her forgiveness and invite her back to the tribe.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: Maya and Zatz share a tension-filled conversation in the forest when Zatz asks her to join forces with him and his father in overthrowing Lord Mictlan. Maya tries to remain confrontational, but...
Maya: Join forces? First you wanna kill me, then you send your girlfriend after me.
Zatz: Hmm. Ex— Ex-girlfriend. We broke up.
Maya: (excited) You did? I-I mean, w-whatever. I'll never join forces with the likes of you.
    Zatz: (stepping closer) Why not?!
Maya: (gets up in his face) I can't trust you!
(the two of them share a look before awkwardly turning away from each other)
  • Bits of Me Keep Passing Out: Rico is still feeling the effects of the sleep darts at the start of the episode, and has to climb the giant pyramid and sit through the meeting with the Widow Queen while his right arm and leg are still asleep.
  • Brutal Honesty: Chimi says that Maya smells like a liar and doesn't believe that she's honest with them. And when Maya asks him about his plans for her, Zatz nonchalantly reveals that he intended to take her to his father so they could sacrifice her themselves in order to defeat Lord Mictlan.
Maya: Why is everyone so brutally honest with me today?!
  • The Cloudcuckoolander Was Right: Chimi doubts Maya's sincerity about quest to destroy the Divine Gate, saying that Maya smells like a liar. Maya brushes her off, but Zatz later tells her that he knows her true plan is to cross the Gate and kill the God of War.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Chimi's mother died during childbirth. Furthermore, Chimi's unusual appearance (red eyes, white hair, and pale skin) earned her the title of "el monstruo blanco" (the white monster) among the superstitious people of her tribe, who thought she was a curse sent to them by the gods due to her albinism and the fact she was born under a solar eclipse. In fear, the albino girl was carried far into the forest and left to her fate. Chimi was adopted and raised by the animals of the forest, learning their ways. Eventually, she joined and won an archery tournament in Skull, earning the golden bow and a place the King's personal bodyguard. Offended that the King calls her his "new pet" she punches him, only for the King to order the forest burned down, ignoring his daughter's pleas to stop. In the fire, Chimi lost both her home and Monkey, who raised her since infancy.
  • Defiant to the End: When Acat realizes that Lord Mictlan intends to execute her, she draws her weapons and curses that he'll regret his decision. She unfortunately doesn't get very far before she's killed.
  • Dying Declaration of Love:
    • A parental example. Chimi's mother's last words were that she loved her newborn daughter.
    • Acat's last words are a farewell to Zatz.
  • Establishing Character Moment:
    • The old King has a bunch of his subjects to form a slide and another one to serve as a human surfboard in order for his to descend from his throne on the top of the pyramid to the ground and get a better look at "the monstruo blanco", with the last part of the slide being made up of three children who visibly struggle under his weight.
    • The King's young daughter, who will become known as the Widow Queen, hops down the stairs of the pyramid on her own two feet and uses her pet doll to happily greet Chimi. Chimi in turn cracks a genuine smile at the girl.
  • Exact Words: Acat attempts to invoke it to avoid revealing Zatz's whereabouts (and betrayal) to Lady Micte. Lord Mictlan calls her out on it, forcing her to give them a more pertinent but just as uninformative answer.
  • The Exile: Chimi was cast out of the Skull Kingdom because she was an albino born during a solar eclipse and was believed to be cursed.
  • Family of Choice: Chimi considers the animals of the forest to be her family, with Monkey being something akin to a Parental Substitute.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: During toddler Chimi's escape from Skull, Ah Puch can be seen holding out a bow which the girl grabs before running away. The old lady then sadly mutters the girl's name: Chimi.
  • Groin Attack: Rico gets one from Chimi after he dreamily calls her a "miracle".
  • Human Pincushion: Maya and especially Rico are covered in sleep darts from the Skull warriors' ambush in the previous episode's finale.
  • I Know Kung Fu: Monkey strikes a kung-fu pose before beating the snot out of the snake trying to eat baby Chimi.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Maya complains to the orphaned and outcast Chimi about how being the daughter of the Goddess of Death ruined her life and disrupted her relationship with her father and stepmother. Chimi understandably growls at her.
Chimi: Enough. Before you start complaining about what you don't have, be thankful for what you do have.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: "Chiapa, trust me, there's nothing to be afraid of." Cue a barrage of arrows.
  • Irony: The people of Skull Kingdom paint white skull masks on their faces, but they are deathly afraid of a girl who has naturally pale skin (a natural "skull face", if you will).
  • I Work Alone: Chimi agrees to follow Maya to the Divine Gate but doesn't want to work with her and Rico at first because she doesn't trust them. She changes her mind after she sees them defending her from Hura and Can, and starts thinking of them as her True Companions.
  • Language Fluency Denial: Chimi can speak the language of the humans, she just sees little point in doing so since most humans before Maya and Rico showed up were either terrified of her or trying to hurt her.
  • Love at First Sight: Rico is smitten with Chimi the moment he gets a good look at her, calling her "a miracle". She responds with a Groin Attack, a judo backflip, and an attempt to skewer him with an arrow. His jaw hits the floor again when he sees Chimi all made up with Skull warrior warpaint.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": Every god gasps when Acat foolishly insists to be allowed to continue hunting for Maya, knowing that Lord Mictlan won't tolerate such insolence.
  • Master Archer: Chimi is a fantastic archer, able to shoot multiple arrows at once and perform insane trick shots. She won the only archery tournament she joined by a landslide, earning the golden bow she wields.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Lord Camazotz has a brief look of fear when it looks like Acat will betray Zatz and doom him to death in order to save her own skin.
    • Lord Camazotz has another look of fear when Lord Mictlan consumes Acat's heart; his fear is surprisingly shared by Lady Micte.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Despite some childish habits (such as carrying a doll around and throwing tea parties), the Widow Queen is a surprisingly level-headed ruler. She voices her surprise that the Jungle Lands' involvement in the Teca prophecy, bemoans her father's shortsightedness, has been trying to fix her father's mistakes, and identifies the outcast Chimi as the best archer in the Jungle Lands.
  • Sins of the Father: The former King burned down Chimi's home in the forest, killing many of Chimi's animal friends. His daughter the Widow Queen considers the way her father treated Chimi to be abominable. She seeks to make reparations to Chimi by asking for her forgiveness and inviting her back to the tribe to take her rightful place as the best archer among their people.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: Having been raised by the animals of the forest, Chimi is able to speak to them using each animal's language. In fact, it's because of her fluency in animal-speak that Maya and Rico initially assumed she couldn't understand what they were telling her.
  • The Reveal: Lord Mictlan can become stronger by consuming the hearts of other gods.
  • This Means Warpaint: Chimi paints her skin with traditional Skull warrior marking before joining Maya on her quest.
  • You Have Failed Me: Zig-Zagged. Lord Mictlan doesn't punish Acat for failing to bring Maya back to him, but he does kill her when she foolishly insists to continue looking for Maya in order to "atone for her failure" (i.e. look for Zatz and possibly find a way to kill Maya).
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Rico's reaction when the Widow Queen invites him and Maya to a tea party.
Rico: (quietly, to Maya) Make-believe tea party time? You can't be serious.
Widow Queen: Would you prefer the hyenas?
Rico: I'll take my tea with two lumps.
(Maya smiles and hastily nods in agreement)
