Recap / Maya And The Three Chapter 2 The Prophecy

Go To

Wanting to protect Maya from Lord Mictlan, the Tecas declare war against the gods and march to destroy the Divine Gate, only to be annihilated by the God of Death. With a little help from the mysterious old woman, Ah Puch, Maya finds out that the prophecy was wrong and sets out to fulfill the true prophecy: find the Rooster wizard, the Skull archer and the Puma warrior, and lead them against the gods.

Tropes present in this episode:

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Acat and Zatz seem to be in a relationship, but while Acat is shown to be flirty with Zatz, he barely seems able to stand her. Zatz has enough after Acat tries to kill Maya by stabbing her In the Back, and ends it off with her.
  • Amazon Chaser: Downplayed. Despite the grim circumstances of their meeting (him returning her brothers' wrecked weapons to her), Zatz is impressed with Maya's courage when she uses two broken arrows to hold him at bay. Later, he describes her to his father as "courageous, loyal, and beautiful".
  • Battle Discretion Shot: The Teca army, spearheaded by the King and his three sons, is charging against the sadistically smirking God Of War. Cue opening card.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Maya's brothers swear to fight the gods not because of the prophecy, but in order to protect their sister from being sacrificed.
  • Character Death: Lance, Daggers, Shield, and the entire Teca army are killed by Lord Mictlan.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The God of War, alone, against the entire Teca army. Lord Mictlan annihilated them.
  • Due to the Dead: Zatz seeks out King Teca and Maya to deliver to them the remains of the triplets' weapons so their family may honor them properly. Immediately after, the scene changes to the city of Teca holding a public funeral for them.
  • Foreshadowing: The part of the true prophecy that Maya reads aloud says that the Rooster, Skull, Puma, and Little Eagle will fight a "two-headed serpent".
  • Good Stepmother: Queen Teca tells Maya that even though she was angry at her husband for cheating on her with the Goddess of Death, she couldn't be angry with Maya, the child born of that affair. Instead, she immediately embraced Maya and raised her as her own.
  • Good Parents: Despite his intimidating appearance, Camazotz, the God of Bats, is shown to care a great deal about his son. Zatz feels comfortable confiding his growing feelings for Maya to his father; Camazotz listen to his son's babbling and looks worried when Lord Mictlan sends Zatz after Maya again with the explicit threat that this will be his last chance.
  • I Shall Taunt You: Acat taunts Maya by hiding in the shadows and asking her to "come out and plaaaay!" In response, Maya starts calling Acat a chicken for not facing her head-on.
Acat: That stupid half-breed did not just call me out!
  • Joke and Receive: Queen Teca asks the King to be safe as the army is marching off to the Divine Gate, only for the King to reply that, "I have a battle jaguar! What could be safer?" He meant it as a joke, but Chiapa is the only reason he survives the battle with the God of War.
  • Lock-and-Load Montage: Maya is shown putting on her mother's old armor and her father's old sword, Eagle Claw.
  • Not So Above It All: The usually stoic Zatz watches the fight between Maya and Acat with a smile on his face. When Maya wins, he loudly cheers and congratulates her.
    Maya: Cállate, Zatz!
  • Properly Paranoid: Acat volunteers to accompany Zatz on his search for Maya and promises to show restraint. Lady Micte knows better than to trust her, and makes a point of asking Zatz to make sure that Maya is brought back alive. Sure enough, Acat gets a little too much pleasure in hurting Maya, especially after Zatz voices his concern for her; Zatz's involvement is the only reason Maya comes out of this alive.
  • Prophecy Twist: Maya discovers, with a little help with the kooky old lady, that the Tecas had the prophecy all wrong. It wasn't about the Great Eagle and the Three Jaguars; instead, the Rooster (a wizard), the Skull (an archer), the Puma (a warrior), and the Little Eagle (Maya herself) will be the ones to fight the dark gods and save the world.
  • The Reveal: Lord Mictlan was the one who removed Zatz's left eye at some unspecified point.
  • Sacrificial Lion: Maya's brothers are among the God of War's victims, showing that Lord Mictlan is a dangerous foe and that even the best warriors of Teca can't protect Maya from him.
  • Semi-Divine: Zatz tells Maya that he's not a demon, but rather a Half-Human Hybrid like her.
  • Tell Me About My Father: Mother, in this case. Maya asks her parents about her birth mother, wanting to know why Lady Micte suddenly took an interest in her and wants to sacrifice her now, after fifteen years. She also asks them why they didn't tell her the truth about her parentage sooner.
  • Tempting Fate:
    • Maya lays out her plan to get the Rooster, Skull, and Puma, which will be entirely fight-less and safe. She's proven wrong before she's even left Teca territory.
    • Queen Teca tells Maya that, "If you're not in Teca, it will be harder for Lord Mictlan to find you." His servants, on the other hand...
  • Wrecked Weapon: Zatz returns the Lance, Daggers, and Shield's broken weapons to their father and sister, and offers them his condolences for their loss.
  • Woman Scorned: Acat does not appreciate Zatz calling Maya's name out of concern for her. Her response is to grab Eagle Claw and try to Murder the Hypotenuse.
