Chapter 89: The Obligatory Beach Day!

All the kids decide to relax by having a beach day. However, nothing is ever relaxing for these kids.

Tropes that appear in this Chapter:

  • Accidental Hand-Hold: A minor case. Marco and Jackie both reach into a bag of marshmallows and their pinkies make contact. Despite both of them getting flustered, Jackie's cool with it.
  • Adaptational Karma: At the end of Star vs. the Forces of Evil, Omnitraxus Prime was merely wiped from existence for his actions against monsterkind. Here, he was killed in battling against Bill Cipher.
  • An Aesop: No matter how bad things get, you can find a way to make the best of a bad situation in order to move forward.
  • Always Someone Better: During their fight, Meteora brags about how Puck has never been able to defeat her in such scenarios, and it shows as she keeps bouncing back from his attacks and leaves him staggering for a majority of the fight until Maleficent orders them to stop.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Given how Cross disappeared during the Scarfish attack, the new Golden Guard showing up soon after and flinching when Lindsay refers to them as Cross, and the guy looking away from Lindsay after he returns, it's really looking like they're the same person.
  • Badass Teacher: Even though she was under mind control at the time, Beck shows why she's St. Epiderm's Bard track teacher, being able to create deafening, powerful shockwaves using her drums.
  • Beach Episode: As the title suggests, the chapter is one but has two for each realm: the first follows Luz, Amity, Willow, Gus, Viney, Jerbo, Barcus, Skara, Amelia, Cat, and Kay spending the day at the beachfront of Echo Creek with Janna, Jackie, and Marco while the second shows Boscha (at Beck's suggestion) and her friends going on a beach trip with St. Epiderm students along with Edric and Emira, who spend the day with their new friends.
  • Big, Screwed-Up Family: Luz acknowledges that she has horrible relatives in both her human and witch families, as Abigail and Clara being her godfamily means she's technically related to in-law Angel and the previous members of the Gates, who are psychopathic witch hunters, while the Clawthornes... well, they have Philip/Belos.
  • Brain Bleach: Seeing Hooty in her swimsuit makes Eda comment that her eyeballs are bleeding from the sight.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy
  • Breather Episode: While the Scarfish acts as the Monster of the Week in the A-plot focusing on Boscha, this is played straight for the B-plot focusing on Luz and her friends.
  • Broken Pedestal: Seth seems to have become this for Star after abandoning his soldiers to die at the hands of creatures he summoned to win a war he started.
  • The Bus Came Back:
    • Meteora and Maleficent make their first appearances since the Halloween sidetrack, "Party at the Bones Yard".
    • Janna, Jackie and Marco are seen for the first time since "Leaving Echo Creek", as Amity takes Luz to Echo Creek to meet and check up on them for the first time since she left.
  • Call-Back:
    • Luz and Amity visit Echo Creek to check on how the latter's human friends are doing since the last time she saw them.
    • Boscha's friends haven't been doing well since the encounter with Demon-Puck in "How to Save a Life", which is why they go to Tibilas Bay with her to take their minds off of what happened.
    • Luz encourages Gus to open up about his problems instead of bottling them up, not wanting to witness a repeat of what Boscha went through.
  • Commonality Connection: As Amity predicted, Luz and Janna immediately click due to their love of classic horror movies.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Luz refers to Marco as "the guy who picks on little kids", as Amity told her about his beef with Jeremy.
    • Puck returns to the Darling house in London, where he has Flashbacks to both his initial meeting with Wendy and his reunion with her after returning Jane home.
    • Boscha's Awesomeness by Analysis skill is seen again when she looks over Mel and her gang and becomes suspicious of them.
    • Nina complains about not having any privacy because a Brooke entered her room at the worst possible private moment.
    • Lilith mentions that her last vacation was fourteen years ago. The prologue showed her taking one after killing Camila.
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • Boscha finally gets to have the A-plot for herself as her going on the beach trip with the St. Epiderm class gives her and her friends, LOWTH, the other St. Epiderm students, and Mel's gang ample focus while Luz and her friends are in the Human Realm for the day.
    • The Clawthorne sisters also get their own plots: Eda goes to the orphanage to see how things operate there while Lilith takes Hunter and Star to investigate the Escape Temple.
  • Death Glare: Serpentina fires one at Mel for insulting the dead Scarfish.
  • Dirty Coward: Seth brought in the Exorcists as reinforcements against the Mewmans but after the creatures double-crossed them and started killing members on both sides of the conflict before starting to merge with the Nightmare Realm, Seth ditched out and escaped to the Demon Realm.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Once Nina realizes she'll have the house to herself, she closes the door to her room and watches videos of her crush in a swimsuit while her tail is raised all the way up in the air. When someone enters her room, she becomes horribly embarrassed, kicks them out, and asks what she has to do to get some privacy.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Although he's unnamed, Professor Cuddlebuns of the former Shadowy Secret Exposers appears at the end of the chapter talking to Athena in the Conformatorium.
  • Emotion Suppression: True to canon, Willow represses her feelings about what she endured in the Human Realm when asked about her experiences by Ms. Traveler, telling her to focus on Gus instead.
  • Everyone Can See It: Upon hearing that Bo's hanging out with Mattholomule alone, all the girls in Luz's friend group pick up on the implications.
  • Everyone Meets Everyone:
    • Luz and the rest of her friend group are introduced to Amity's friends in Echo Creek.
    • Boscha and her friends interact with several St. Epiderm students, including LOWTH, along with Mel's gang.
  • Expy: The Scarfish is one to Starro the Conquerer from Justice League of America.
  • Fanservice: All the witches and Echo Creek characters in both plotlines appear in swimsuits since, a-duh, it's a Beach Episode.
  • Fur Bikini: Downplayed, but Skara wears a white-furred tube top as part of her swimwear.
  • Furry Confusion: Maya sees some Human Realm crabs on Echo Creek's beach and tries talking to them because she thinks they're palismen, even taking control of Luz's body to do so.
  • The Ghost:
    • Matt and Bo have other plans, so they're only mentioned when asked why they're not coming to Echo Creek.
    • Mr. X is brought up, having apologized for his previous actions towards Jackie and her friends.
  • Given Name Reveal:
    • The winged creatures are revealed to be called Exorcists.
    • Ukla's last name is revealed to be "Ulma".
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Janna is showing signs of this towards Marco and Jackie getting closer.
  • I Am Not Weasel: Upon meeting Ukla, Cross assumes she's a dragon biped demon and she explains that she's actually a lizard biped.
  • Instant Costume Change: To help deal with the Scarfish, Sarah douses herself with a potion that instantly materializes a black and yellow superhero costume for her to wear.
Sarah: There's a reason I'm the top potions student!
  • In Spite of a Nail: Star learns that she's not related to Eclipsa and that the royal family from Festivia to her aren't true Butterflys. She later starts seeing Glossaryck in random places.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Luz, Willow, Gus, Viney, Jerbo, Barcus, Skara, Amelia, Cat, and Kay meet Janna, Jackie & Marco, visit Echo Creek, and see Jackie in her mermaid form.
      • In addition, Viney, Jerbo, Barcus, Skara, Amelia, Cat, and Kay visit Earth for the first time.
      • Marco learns about Maya and her situation with Luz from Gus.
    • Lilith, Hunter and Star meet Eclipsa for the first time and are filled in about her hearing by Kitsuni.
    • Eclipsa has been given the rundown about Philip becoming Belos.
    • Boscha, Gavin, Riley, Sarah, Roxy, Lindsay and Minerva learn or have learned that Donna and her friends are LOWTH.
    • Donna learns from Eda that Amber and Derwin are in the Conformatorium and Belos told Luz not to break them out after her failed attempt to do so before.
  • Jaw Drop: Performed by Luz upon seeing Amity in her swimsuit.
  • Karma Houdini: Seth turns out to be both this and a Dirty Coward as he's the reason the Exorcists slaughtered several Mewmans and Monsters only to escape punishment and reach the Boiling Isles.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Ukla's statement about regularly being confused for a dragon biped demon is a nod to how fans believed that until she was reclassified as a reptile demon on the Owl House wiki.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": After returning home, Luz's friend group is stunned to see the news of the Scarfish attack on their scrolls and are amazed they lucked out on not getting caught up in that hot mess.
  • Noodle Incident: Viney forced Jerbo and Barcus to watch Puddles once; he nearly mauled them.
Jerbo: I still have nightmares from the last time you made us watch him...
    Barcus: Woof (Never again.)
Viney: I know, I should've picked Luz to watch over Puddles when I was out that day.
  • Not in Front of the Kid: Luz gets a bit too hyped when talking about the 1988 Blob movie and says it f#@$ed her up... in front of Kay, prompting Amity to cover her ears.
  • Obviously Not Fine: Following the Scarfish attack, Boscha tells her friends that she's been struggling not to feel as miserable as they've been due to all the crap she's gone through, especially with her family and Tom being in the Conformatorium. But while she knows things suck now, she won't let it lord over her and keep pressing on, something Gavin, Angmar, and Ukla agree on.
  • Out of Focus: Luz's friends spend a relaxing day in the Human Realm, giving the A-plot to Boscha and her friends so they can shine with the St. Epiderm students.
  • Retcon: As of this chapter, Ukla is now a lizard biped demon instead of a dragon biped.
  • The Reveal:
    • Eda has taken the offer to run Scooter Crane's orphanage.
    • Amity finally got around to telling Luz about her time in Echo Creek, so she knows about her human friends.
    • Hunter's at potential risk of suffering from grimwalker deterioration, meaning he could rot since Belos may not have perfected the experimentations on the process.
    • Jackie told her parents about Amity's true origins and Mr. X apologized for his previous actions against the girls.
    • Eclipsa has moved into the Escape Temple and Kitsuni (now her parole officer) has been helping her settle in.
    • The winged creatures that attacked Mewni called themselves Exorcists. Seth made a deal with their master to use them to turn the tide in the war against the Solarian Warriors, but they double-crossed the monsters and killed several members on both sides before Mewni merged with the Nightmare Realm, Seth escaping soon after.
    • Omnitraxus Prime and Lekmet were killed fighting Bill Cipher.
    • The reason the Order has no jurisdiction in the Boiling Isles is because the Demon Realm is a sovereign realm and they can't do anything about Belos unless he declares war first. If he does, Eclipsa will be the last resort in stopping him by talking him out of going through with it if it comes down to it.
    • Donna has a history with Eustace and Serpentina, who mention that they knew her as "Party-Donna".
    • Jackie confirms that Kay will grow her limbs soon.
    • Though not said out loud, Janna is confirmed to have feelings for Marco.
    • Professor Cuddlebuns is currently incarcerated in the Conformatorium.
  • Scary Stinging Swarm: During the fight against Meteora, Puck transforms into a swarm of bees to escape her snake constriction, stinging her a few times.
  • Seashell Bra: Serpentina has a green sheashell top with her beach attire.
  • Sensible Heroes, Skimpy Villains: A majority of the kids are wearing proper swimming attire; the only exception is Trini, who's revealing a lot of skin.
  • Sequel Hook:
    • Meteora and Maleficent have planted the idea of overthrowing Oberon into Puck's head and will now wait for him to accept their proposition.
    • Thanks to Janna giving them her copy of "The War on Witchcraft", the Clawthornes now have knowledge on the beings Gabriel wrote about to research.
    • As implied by Barcus, Marco will soon earn his red belt.
    • Boscha and Emira become suspicious of Mel's gang.
    • Mel takes interest in Donna's keyblade.
    • Gavin, Roxy, Sarah, and Riley express interest in joining or assisting LOWTH in the future.
    • Thanks to Janna, Amelia and Cat have the knowledge to start a counterculture in the Isles for their revolution.
    • Amity hopes to bring Janna and Jackie to the Isles someday, Janna hoping to learn glyph magic.
    • Star begins to see Glossaryk in reflections despite him being dead.
    • Professor Cuddlebuns is planning his escape, and is biding his time until things are in his favor.
  • Ship Tease:
    • Kyle becomes flustered after Ukla helps him out when he's being picked on by the Graux sisters.
      • Muka of the Graux sisters also becomes flustered after Kyle helps her out during the Scarfish invasion.
    • Jackie and Marco both react accordingly when their pinkies touch while they're roasting marshmallows.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Sigh of Love: Now that Lindsay's more convinced than ever that Cross is the new Golden Guard, she lets one of these out.
  • Significant Wardrobe Shift:
    • Eclipsa's traded out her gown for more practical clothing after moving to the Boiling Isles: a purple flannel shirt, jeans, and sneakers.
    • Implied for Cat, who buys an all-jean outfit while shopping on the Echo Creek pier and intends to use it to market her counterculture.
  • Something Else Also Rises: Nina has her tail raised in the air while she's watching Donna's livestream.
  • Sticky Fingers: Eustace pickpockets several people at the beach, taking items such as Kyle's watch.
  • Take That!: The very chapter is a direct statement to how The Owl House didn't have enough of a runtime to include a Beach Episode, which already got highlighted in "O Titan, Where Art Thou".
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave
  • Unfortunate Names: Ms. Hickelton is nicknamed "Ms Hicky" by the kids and staff at the orphanage, and Eda prefers her nickname too much to address her properly.
  • The Un-Reveal: How did Professor Cuddlebuns know Boscha had recovered from her paralysis? And why is he in the Conformatorium?
  • Wham Episode: Boscha and Emira begin keeping an eye on Mel's gang, Gavin, Sarah, Roxy, and Riley become open to joining LOWTH, Eclipsa makes herself at home in the escape temple, Star begins having visions of Glossaryck, Lilith and Hunter see someone visiting Marilyn's grave, and Athena and Tom meet Professor Cuddlebuns, who tells them he's planning to break out once the time is right.
  • Written-In Absence: Danny doesn't attend the trip to the beach because he came down with a stomach flu.
