Art by Crash X Fusion: Hello, my dear...

Luz joins a protest at the Coven Day Parade only to be confronted by several enemies; Kitsuni continues investigatiing at the Knee for clues and finds a bigger secret.

Tropes that appear in this Chapter:

  • Abusive Parents: Destiny slaps Alador while he is having a nervous breakdown during the parade.
  • Accidental Murder:
    • Skara accidentally kills a squirrel trying to get rid of a knife Nina had on her.
    • In what was supposed to be a harmless prank, Cups and Mugs accidentally scared Scooter Crane to death.
  • Ascended Extra: Very downplayed but vital. The pink bat girl from Glandus High seen in "Them's the Breaks, Kid" appears as an adult and speaks out against Terra's cruelty towards children based on her actions at the IFWOT.
  • Asshole Victim: To stick it to Emily and get her off her case, Luz makes her step on an ice glyph which turns her into a near-Witch Popsicle.
  • Big Sister Worship: West and Winter clearly adore Nina and miss her while she's staying at the Brooke's, and she admits she misses them, too.
  • Bittersweet Ending: While King and Hooty's prank for the Coven Day parade succeeds, the whole thing ends in disaster due to the Grim Goblin's attack and Belos announcing the Day of Unity. Crane dies because of Cups and Mugs (who don't get punished for it) which means Belos will be on the hunt for a new Head Witch for the Bard Coven, while Mel gets away with the chaos she caused. The Inner Shapeshifter escapes before Kitsuni can capture him, but at least she rescues Raine from his clutches and brings them Eda to help them recover, though it'll be a while before they're back to full strength after the Mind Rape they went through. And while Terra is burned by Luz and put on probation for making a scene, she's revealed to have Perry at her mercy.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Mel's shadow messed with one of the most intimidating Coven Heads and left everyone else to deal with her.
  • The Bus Came Back:
    • After their cameo in flashbacks and as a shadow in "The Glandus War: Turning Point", Raine finally returns since being captured by the Inner Demon in "The Ballad of Eda: Part 2".
    • Batroc, the beast student in the Plant track, reappears since "Exams to Survive" last season.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Dusty doesn't remember Nina assaulting him in their Beast Battle 26 chapters ago.
  • Call-Back:
    • Luz mentions meeting Dell during her video diary.
    • From "Hexing Out for a Hero", Eda continues helping Camila catch up on current Human events, Luz brings up her tolerance truce with Nina and Beocrow telling her about their extended family, everybody's talking about Skara's spray-painting on the Belos statue, and Kitsuni continues investigating Amity's disappearance at the Knee.
    • Kitsuni brings up Eda taking down the Greater Basilisk and Glandus' forces sneaking into Hexside during the school war when trying to convince Faust to keep her on staff as head of security.
  • The Cameo:
    • Alador spots one of Amity's missing posters during the parade.
    • Louis, Celine and Batroc are among the students talking about the vandalized statue at Hexside.
    • Nicole shows up in Boscha's room at the Healing Coven telling her she hopes she'll forgive her for what she's going to do next.
    • Lilith goes to Dr. Bride's clinic for an update on Hunter and sees that Stella is now working for the doctor.
    • Larry shows up to give Eda news about the Tarot Guild operating in Metropelvis.
    • The Foxes are shown reporting on the parade.
    • Gavin, Angmar and Ukla meet up at the former's house to talk about Boscha's attack and Hunter's disappearance.
    • Grimhilde appears in the crowd during the parade to express her dislike of Sunny.
    • Captain Wolffe is shown commanding Le'Belle and the scouts to investigate King and Hooty's float.
    • LOWTH, Beel, Sarah, Simon, Beck and Samwitch are shown watching Belos' announcement for the Day of Unity.
  • Cassandra Truth: Luz finds herself between telling people she didn't leave grafitti on the Belos statue in Bonesborough and the coven scouts, especially Emily, that she's not going to cause trouble at the parade. With all that she's done in the past, no one but her friends will actually believe she's innocent.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Maya's still not talking due to her guilt over what she did to Hunter.
    • Faust has reinstated Detention Hall, calling the new version "Clawthorne-proof".
    • Gavin mentions Hunter asking him if he could stay at his place the night he disappeared and wonders if it's connected to Boscha being attacked.
  • Easily Forgiven: Played With and Discussed. Dusty immediately accepts Nina's apology, while Amelia does not. Skara points out that Nina hasn't forgiven Calypso for what her side of the family has done and she admits that she hasn't forgiven Boscha yet either.
  • Expy:
    • Cups, Mugs, and Grandpa Kettle are respectively parodies of Cuphead, Mugman, and Elder Kettle and Mel serves as a stand-in for Ms. Chalice.
    • Le'Belle Case is a parody of Courtney of Total Drama.
    • The Grim Goblin parodies the Green Goblin, having red eyes, wearing a loincloth and boots as part of his outfit, and using pumpkin-themed weaponry.
    • Ollie is inspired by Tommy Oliver, the face of Power Rangers. His outfit incorporates all four colors Tommy had as a Ranger: Green, White, Black and Red.
    • Nina's younger siblings, West and Winter, are based off of Wily Kat and Wily Kit from ThunderCats (1985).
  • Eye Scream: Crane's eye falls out of its socket and onto Graye's shoe, causing him to scream and alerting people to Crane's death.
  • Failed a Spot Check: King lampshades how Raine was at the Knee when the Clawthornes traveled to Eclipse Lake and they didn't even find a clue hinting they were there.
  • Felony Misdemeanor: After Mel's shadow sets Terra's float on fire, she looks around and spots Luz, immediately blaming her and trying to shut down the protest until Calypso stops her.
  • Firing Day: Subverted for Kitsuni as even though Faust has put in a new Detention Hall and attempts to let her go, she and Ms. Traveler convince him to let her stay and teach their future self-defense classes.
  • Foreshadowing: Winter mentioning that Purristan is not happy with Nina's actions.
  • Given Name Reveal:
    • The twin kittens who appeared during "Prelude to War: Part Two" are named West and Winter.
    • Mrs. Carpenter mentions that her daughter's middle name is "Day", making her full name "Bria Day Carpenter".
  • Heroic BSoD: As Alador isn't used to doing public appearances, he has a nervous breakdown during the parade.
  • Hidden Depths: Both Kitsuni and Ms. Traveler can speak Japanese, using it to talk in code since no one can understand them.
  • Hiding Behind the Language Barrier: Kitsuni and Ms. Traveler speak in Japanese to discuss how they could save themselves the trouble of putting up with Faust by making him disappear.
Kitsuni: (in Japanese) You know, we could have just taken him out and hidden the body.
Ms. Traveler: (in Japanese) No, too risky.
  • Immediate Sequel: This chapter is set the day after "Hexing Out for a Hero".
  • Innocently Insensitive: Skara realizes she is being this when she asks Nina if she misses her home and family.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Luz begins making video diaries for her loved ones in the Human Realm, King and Hooty build an effigy of Belos for the parade and cause havoc, Belos announces the Day of Unity, reveals his face to the Isles and has one of his associates tell Luz "he looks forward to meeting her". Plus, Luz starts calling Amity "Sweet Potato".
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Nina realizes that Skara had Boscha to cover for her.
    • Luz discovers that Emily's out of the Conformatorium and working for Graye.
    • Odalia realizes that Destiny is out of the retirement home she put her and Arthur in.
    • Luz meets Danny and Abel for the first time, with Eda meeting the latter after fighting Terra with Luz.
  • Karma Houdini: Cups and Mugs get off scot-free for accidentally killing Scooter Crane. Mel also gets away with causing pandemonium at the parade.
  • Killed Off for Real: Scooter Crane dies due to choking and having a heart attack after being startled by two pranksters.
  • Large Ham: Danny when getting his classmates to show some pep while working on their float, as Riley points out.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: For provoking a crowd of worried families into starting a riot and attacking Luz despite Belos' orders not to threaten her, Terra gets the right half of her face burned and is put on probation with Calypso being praised for keeping her head straight when Terra could not.
  • Luminescent Blush: Lindsay hides one after the Golden Guard saves her.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Cups and Mugs get hysterical when they realize the old man they just pranked and accidentally killed was a Coven Head.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain:
    • In chastising Alador on a live broadcast, Destiny indirectly lets Odalia know she's back and turning her husband against her.
    • Terra calls the children who went missing stupid during her confronting Luz; the parents at the parade riot as a result, plus Summer's recording it on her scroll and uploading it to Penstagram reinforces everyone's anger and belief that the Emperor's Coven is unreliable.
  • Noodle Incident:
    • Luz played a prank every year at the Coven Day parade, last year's being called the "rabbit incident".
    • Geist once attended a protest to save an old tree, and it didn't end well.
  • Not Helping Your Case: Terra calls the children who got kidnapped stupid during her ranting, Calypso lampshading how she's making things worse. Sure enough, all the parents in the crowd begin rioting.
  • Not Me This Time: Everyone keeps thinking Luz vandalized the Belos statue despite her repeatedly saying it wasn't. Danny even openly accuses her once he sees her at Cat's protest, but she turns it back on him by saying unless there's proof, he's just profiling.
  • Oh, Crap!: Amelia, Jerbo and Barcus are terrified when they see the Plant Coven float going up in flames as it invokes Terra's fury.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: The "rabbit incident" Luz pulled off at the last Coven Day parade. Every time someone brings it up, they either freak out or have a Thousand-Yard Stare.
  • People Puppets: Cups and Mugs have to resort to this to keep people from learning Crane's dead. It doesn't work.
  • Point of Divergence: Differences from "Follies at the Coven Day Parade":
    • For obvious reasons, Amity (who has a photo cameo), Gus, and Willow are absent. Skara and Nina are given a plot line to substitute for the former and latter's roles. Eda also replaces Amity in fighting one of the Emperor's allies with Luz, with Terra replacing Kikimora.
    • Luz ignores Kikimora's breakdown and with Raine MIA, she decides to spend her time at the parade volunteering at Cat's protest against the Coven System. Kikimora, meanwhile, actually gets to attend her family reunion.
    • Instead of a private investigator giving her info on Raine, Eda meets Larry for news about the Tarot Guild.
    • In canon, Belos announced that the Day of Unity will commence in a month. Here, Belos doesn't say exactly how much time there is until the Day of Unity commences.
  • Produce Pelting: Mel's shadow nails Terra with a tomato during her rant, and soon the crowd begins throwing stuff at Terra and Calypso.
  • The Reveal:
    • Principal Faust reinstated Detention Hall, attempting to fire Kitsuni as a result.
    • Stella (now going by her real name, Glinda) was bailed out of prison by her family and is now working for Dr. Bride.
    • Emily has been inducted into the Illusion Coven and is working as a coven scout as part of her apprenticeship. Sonya is also still in contact with her and convinced the Producer to save her life by talking Graye into mentoring Emily.
    • The Old Witch and the Shapeshifter are one and the same, and he's in possession of both Philip's journal (showing that he kidnapped Eve) and "The War on Witchcraft" that Boscha threw away.
    • The Slitherbeast cave the Inner Demon's been keeping Raine prisoner in is close to Eclipse Lake.
    • Hunter has been replaced with a new Golden Guard.
    • Belos reveals he intends to possess Luz and claim her body as a new form on the Day of Unity.
    • It turns out that Perry isn't locked up in the Conformatorium with the BAT's; Terra is holding him prisoner in her own quarters.
  • Rich Kid Turned Social Activist: Cat's become an activist against the Coven system and puts together a protest at the Coven Day Parade to speak for allowing mixing magic.
  • Screams Like a Little Girl: Adrian does this when Crane's eye falls onto his shoe, alerting the coven scouts to the latter's death.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Amelia immediately turns around and walks in the direction opposite of Nina during her first attempt to appologize for attacking her.
  • Sequel Hook:
    • Kitsuni will now be teaching self-defense at Hexside.
    • Sonya's planning to manipulate Nina so she'll continue following Emily through her.
    • Raine's now being kept in the Owl House basement to recover their strength and so Belos doesn't learn about them being found.
    • Exactly why is Terra keeping Perry hostage and why were his eyes glowing white?
  • Ship Tease:
    • Between Steve and Sunny, who have a Meet Cute moment. Steve also gets flustered when Matt questions if he knows Sunny when he waves at her.
    • Lindsay seems to fall for the new Golden Guard as a result of them saving her during the Grim Goblin's attack, setting the seeds of a Rescue Romance.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Skewed Priorities: During the start of the Grim Goblin's attack, Cat can only focus on keeping her protest going until Luz tells her they have to leave for their own safety.
  • Thousand-Yard Stare: Eda has one while remembering the "rabbit incident".
Eda: I can still hear the screaming...
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Kikimora gets to attend her family's reunion at Palm Springs and later laughs at Terra's misfortune.
  • Troubled Fetal Position: Alador ends up in this position when he has his Heroic BSoD.
  • The Un-Reveal:
    • Mel disappears during the parade. Immediately after this, Kitsuni gets attacked by the Shapeshifter. When Kitsuni notices that the Shapeshifter doesn't have a shadow, we see Mel's shadow acting on its own during the parade. Whether this means Mel is the Shapeshifter or not is unclear.
    • What's Nicole plotting to do now?
    • Who is the New Golden Guard? Is it another grimwalker, or did someone else take up the mantle? Not even their gender is revealed.
    • Why didn't Terra's tea work on Calypso?
    • It is unknown whether or not Belos or any of the coven heads are aware that Terra is holding Perry prisoner.
  • Vagueness Is Coming: While readers know what Belos's plans for Luz are by now, In-Universe the characters are only told that he plans to take a new form on the Day of Unity. The Clawthornes only guess that what he's got in mind has to do with his cambion form.
  • Waving Signs Around: Cat's protest has several people doing this to protest the Coven System; Roden in particular is holding a sign that says "PAY WORKERS MORE!" because he's protesting the lack of unionization in the Fast Food Coven.
  • Wham Episode: A new Golden Guard shows up to battle the latest villain, the Grim Goblin, Luz learns how to cast fire spells while fighting Terra, Kitsuni rescues Raine from the Shapeshifter (who's confirmed to be the old witch) and brings them to the Owl House to recover in secret, Crane dies which means the Bard Coven now has no Head Witch, and Terra's now on probation and revealed to be detaining Perry in her greenhouse.
  • Wham Shot:
    • Everyone is stunned to see the Golden Guard at the parade, even more so when he uses magic. That's how everyone who knows Hunter can tell it isn't him.
    • As Luz tries to escape Terra, she casts a spell circle... instead of a light spell, she casts a fire spell!
    • The last scene shows Perry wrapped in vines at Terra's greenhouse.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Danny and Riley have disappeared by the time the riot begins, and they don't reappear before the ending.
  • You, Get Me Coffee: Hinted at. After learning that Emily's working for Graye as he saw her use, Luz snarks that the only thing she'd be useful for is being his coffee girl.
