Art by Crash X Fusion: First thing you do in a new town: get a new look.

After making a new friend, Amity is convinced to spend the day exploring Echo Creek.

Tropes that appear in this Chapter:

  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Since Alfonzo and Ferguson moved and he hasn't met Star in this timeline, Marco's closest friends are Janna and Jackie, who he is closer to here than he was at the start of the original series.
  • Adaptational Explanation: For Star Vs.'s canon;
    • We never got an answer for why Gustav was measuring the Diaz parents in their sleep. In Luz Clawthorne, it turns out Janna was blackmailing him, though why she wants the measurements is still a mystery.
    • Jackie mentioned that she once lived in the creek but she didn't elaborate on it. In Luz Clawthorne, it is revealed that it was because she ran away from home after learning she was half-mermaid.
  • Adaptation Species Change: Jackie is never shown to be anything other than human in canon, but in the LC universe she is half-mermaid as a reference to the popular fan theory.
  • Ascended Extra: Brigid, a minor character from a single episode in her parent series, gets a larger role here, where it's revealed she is a vodou practitioner who helped Jackie out once.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Janna tells Amity that the Diazes have a foreign exchange student with them, implying that it's Star... but instead it's Gustav/Charlie Booth.
  • Blackmail: Implied with Janna keeping Gustav's secret of being a Fauxreigner in exchange for him giving her Rafael and Angie's measurements.
  • Breather Episode: The chapter is this for Amity, and it's looong overdue.
  • Call-Back:
    • Janna contacts Dipper for Amity, showing that she's part of the same chat room that Dipper uses.
    • Amity remembers when Boscha put up posters with "human facts", recognizing the pages in "The War on Witchcraft" as having the same words on them.
    • While on the ferris wheel at the pier, Amity tells Janna that her last two experiences at amusement parks ended in disaster.
  • The Cameo:
    • Brittney Wong appears briefly, finding Ghost cute and wanting to have her.
    • Jeremy Birnbaum briefly appears to taunt Marco, while Sensei Brantley makes an unnamed cameo as well.
    • Star appears at the end of this chapter, scavenging for food.
  • Continuity Nod: Amity mentions her job working on a fishing boat in the past.
  • Crossover: With Star vs. the Forces of Evil.
  • Crush Blush: Janna blushes when Marco compliments her pink hair. Marco also blushes a few times because of his crush on Jackie.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: When Jackie was 12, she started transforming into a mermaid for the first time and out of anger towards her parents for not telling her about her heritage, she ran away from home. She stayed with Brigid until she encouraged Jackie to talk to her folks.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Amity's the lone star from the Boiling Isles for this chapter.
  • Everyone Knew Already: Jackie had her suspicions about Amity not being human and upon seeing her ears, she accepts it and lets her in on her own little secret.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: Amity decides she's overdue for a hairstyling and Jackie cuts her hair so it's shorter and she has bangs. And with Amity's encouragement, Janna dyes her hair fuschia with a few strands of her natural hair color.
  • The Ghost:
    • Janna mentions Pastor McCay, saying she'll tell him she'll be helping Amity from here on out.
    • Dipper doesn't physically appear; he's referenced through the private group chat Janna sets up so he can "speak" to Amity.
    • Alfonzo and Ferguson are only mentioned, having apparently moved away some time prior to the present day.
    • The Blight family is given a mention, with Amity talking to Jackie about Odalia trying to reach out to her.
  • Immediate Sequel: The chapter is set the morning after Amity arrived in Echo Creek in "Viva Last Vegans!"
  • In Spite of a Nail:
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Amity learns where Boscha got her 'human facts' from and sees a picture of the Collector within the book.
    • Dipper learns that Amity's in Echo Creek at the moment and informs her of his meeting with Luz.
  • Kick the Dog: Once Amity finishes chewing out Marco over his beef with Jeremy, Janna and Jackie roast him as well, leaving him to retreat into his hoodie.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Marco questions how Brittney isn't able to pronounce "Ghost", calling her "Goost" instead.
  • Limited Wardrobe: Discussed. Amity admits she's been wearing her snow wear for the last 3 days, which leads to Jackie offering to buy her some new clothes. Janna then brings up how Marco has multiple copies of the same red hoodie.
Marco: I just like red hoodies!
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Marco is left out of the loop about Amity being a witch by chapter's end, he and Janna are completely in the dark about Jackie being a mermaid and only Janna is told about Amity being part Fae.
  • Love Confession: Amity confides in Janna that she loves Luz since she misses her so much and appreciates that she gave the Good Witch Azura a shot for her.
  • Luminescent Blush: Janna has one after Marco compliments her new hair color.
  • Minimalist Cast: Amity, Ghost and Sam are the only members of the main cast and the only Demon Realm inhabitants to appear.
  • Multi-Part Episode: The story of this chapter continues on in Chapter 77.
  • No Antagonist: As part of the dedication to this being a proper Breather Chapter, there's absolutely no villains of any sort who show up to mess with Amity. Although, the ending implies that there's one biding their time...
  • Nosebleed: Discussed. Janna states that Luz would have one when she sees Amity in her new outfit.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: At some point, Amity learned how to make a skateboard out of her abomination matter for alternate transportation to her abomi-bike.
  • Our Mermaids Are Different: Jackie is half-mermaid, her father having been a merman who fell in love with a human woman and decided to become human to be with her. When Jackie was twelve, she started to transform into a mermaid and she required magic to transform back into a human. Now she can shift between her human and mermaid forms.
  • Out of Focus:
    • With the focus solely on Amity, Ghost and Sam, the rest of the main cast and the Demon Realm as a whole is absent.
    • Marco Diaz, who is the Deuteragonist of Star vs. the Forces of Evil, doesn't get as much focus as Janna and Jackie. Star, meanwhile, only gets a cameo.
  • Point of Divergence:
    • Star is living on the streets of Echo Creek rather than with the Diazes.
    • Alfonzo and Ferguson have both moved away to Nebraska, so Janna and Jackie are Marco's main friends now.
    • Amity created her abomi-skateboard offscreen prior to "Follies at the Coven Day Parade".
    • Marco and Jackie hang out at the Echo Creek Pier before they become a couple. They also end up freeing more than one lobster from the fancy restaurant.
  • The Reveal:
    • Janna is a member of the group chat Dipper mentioned he and Wade are a part of.
    • Ghost tells Amity that she once knew G.B. Gates.
    • Amity mentions it's been three days since she got stuck in the Human realm.
    • Janna, Marco, and Jackie haven't met Star, who is homeless and eating out of Echo Creek's dumpsters.
  • The Runaway: Jackie. See Dark and Troubled Past above.
  • Secret-Keeper: Both Janna and Jackie get the rundown about Amity being a witch and agree to keep it to themselves. Jackie entrusts Amity with her secret about being half-mermaid and Amity lets Janna know about her being part Fae and allows her to meet Sam.
  • Sequel Hook:
    • Now that Amity knows where Boscha got her "human facts" from, she intends to get confirmation when she recovers from her paralysis.
    • Jackie gives Amity some advice that makes her consider talking to Odalia about her letter.
    • Whoever's spying on Amity may attempt to capture her soon, before she leaves Echo Creek.
  • Ship Tease: Janna takes Amity to Marco first when she decides to show her around town and hides her Luminescent Blush when he compliments her new hairstyle.
  • Shout-Out: One of the supernatural books Janna has is "Dr. P's Extraordinary Guide to Magic & Mystery".
  • Significant Wardrobe Shift: After a shopping trip with Jackie picking out clothes, Amity dons an all-purple outfit composed of a shirt with fishnet arm-sleeves, a pink waist belt over her white belt with a purple buckle, ripped jeans and platform shoes. She also sports a red and white striped witch hat, a blue sleeveless right-glove and two wrist rings on her left arm.
  • Synchronous Episodes: This chapter occurs at the same time as "Hexing Out for a Hero".
  • Take That!: Janna claims that Alfonzo and Ferguson probably got their own unpopular spinnoff that only lasted 10 episodes after moving away.
  • Two Girls and a Guy: The friendship between Janna, Jackie and Marco.
  • Unseen No More: Star Butterfly, having previously been The Ghost, finally appears in person at the end of the chapter.
  • Wham Episode: Amity befriends Janna who agrees to help her get to Gravity Falls and Star is shown to be in Echo Creek and can use magic without a wand.
  • Wham Shot:
    • Amity sees that Janna's got a copy of "The War of Witchcraft".
    • Jackie removes her seashell necklace, and to Amity's surprise, she transforms into a mermaid!
    • An ice cream truck with a clown head and a satellite dish on the roof is shown watching Amity and Janna when they head back to Janna's place, and there's only one guy who uses an ice cream truck as his base of operations...
    • The chapter ends with Star Butterfly scavenging a dumpster for food, clearly having undergone Sanity Slippage like Ludo. She also doesn't have her wand and can use magic naturally.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Played for Laughs when Amity is telling off Marco over his Sitcom Arch-Nemesis relationship with Jeremy, as Janna and Jackie jokingly razz him for how pathetic it actually is.
