Art by Crash X Fusion: Place your bets, 'cuz neither one's backing down!

Luz confronts Amity as their conflict is taken to the Covention. As a result, Luz ends up meeting someone new.

Tropes that appear in this Chapter:

  • Accidental Misnaming: Eda calls Amity "Annie" while she and Luz are discussing the witch's duel.
  • Actually Pretty Funny: When Eda lets slip Lilith peeing a little seeing the Emperor's Coven for the first time, Amity briefly giggles along with the kids.
  • Adaptation Deviation: Unlike the actual "Covention", Luz and Amity don't get the chance to duel because Amity sees the boy who mugged her and runs off to hide.
  • Animate Inanimate Object: The furnace in the custodian's closet is shown to be alive.
  • Berserk Button: Hearing Lilith say Luz should be dead by now given how dangerous the Demon Realm is gets enough of a rise out of Eda to slap her hard enough for everyone around them to hear.
  • The Bet: The one between Luz and Amity is altered from canon: if Luz wins, Amity can't interfere with her personal life. If Amity wins, Luz has to admit she can't learn from all the covens.
  • Bitch Slap: Upon hearing Lilith say Luz doesn't belong in the Boiling Isles and she's lucky not to be dead yet Eda slaps her so hard, the sound echoes and draws the attention of everyone nearby.
  • The Cameo:
    • Celine makes her first appearance here by asking Amity what the story is with her and Luz.
    • Braxas is shown getting an autograph from Amity.
  • Double Entendre: In calling Amity out for attempting to force her to join one coven, Luz accuses her of screwing her over. Twice. Amity calls her an idiot for not realizing how that sounds.
  • Foreshadowing: Lilith tells Amity she will forgive her for not showing up to the witch's duel "with the right motivation", which will have an overarching effect on events going forward...
  • The Ghost: The artist who came up with "Corndog on a Plate" isn't physically seen, but they do end up debuting far later on in the series.
  • Graceful Loser: Even though she takes the second place ribbon in the Bard track art show, Luz is happy with it since it's the first award she's ever received.
  • Immediate Sequel: Things pick up after the last chapter, with Luz on the warpath to confront Amity about entering one of her paintings in the Covention art show.
  • Internal Reveal: Luz meets Lilith for the first time, with Amity realizing Lilith actually is related to Eda and by extension, Luz, having thought it was just coincidence they had the same surname.
  • Luminescent Blush: Amity does this when Luz calls her optimistic.
  • Mama Bear: While Lilith could attempt to arrest her, Eda doesn't hold back on slapping her for insulting her parenting style or her care towards Luz.
  • Noodle Incident:
    • Luz got banned from Hexside's library for overdue fees and instigating a sit-in for the book elves.
    • After hearing Luz call her "mom", Lilith mentions that's the second time that happened.
    • According to Eda, Lilith also suffered from stage fright during a school play and barfed a lot.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Amity submitted Luz's art in the Covention art show because she wanted to support her. Luz, taking it as wanting to encourage her to join the Bard Coven, calls her out and challenges Amity to a witch's duel. They clear the air after Luz finds Amity hiding and crying after seeing one of her muggers.
  • Produce Pelting: Craig, a coven guard, gets pelted with tomatoes for telling jokes about Hexside losing a grudgby game in the 80's to a crowd of Hexside students.
  • The Reveal: Eda admits she was married at some point.
  • Second Place Is for Losers: Subverted. Luz is initially disappointed that her piece in the art show took second place to something so ridiculous, but soon gets over it since it's her first award.
  • Shout-Out: Luz's response after she learns the library guard makes as much as a teacher? "That's rough, buddy."
  • Side Bet: On top of The Bet she has with Amity, Luz has the troublemakers organize a betting pool against her so they can make a profit when she wins. Since the duel never happens, they're forced to give refunds since no one bet on a forfeit.
  • Spit Take: Eda does one after learning the witch's duel will be at the Covention.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: Luz prides herself on the "hi" part: after failing to scare Amity at the library, she successfully does so at the Covention.
  • Stunned Silence: Lilith is speechless by both the Bitch Slap and by Eda's maternal instinct towards Luz.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Luz admits to Amity she was once optimistic.
  • Wham Episode: Luz meets Lilith and the detention trackers get a new teacher.
  • Wham Shot: The detention track's new teacher is shown to be a anthropomorphic blue jackal.
  • "You!" Exclamation: Subverted. Luz hides out in a box outside the school library in order to scare Amity by doing this (including finger point), but Amity had seen her do that before and calls her out on it.
