Recap / lonelygirl15 S01 "Aunt Alex"

Go To

"We are going to my Aunt's house. I think that a lot of my parents financial information and, and all the stuff about the foundation they set up is up there, somewhere. And it's safe... for now."
Jonas, "On The Road Again"
Dates Posted: (2007) March 5, 7-17, 20

Bree, Daniel, and Jonas head to the house of Jonas' aunt Alex, both to stay in a safe place and to find more of research that Jonas' parents collected to fight the Order.

"On The Road Again": The gang are driving up the coast to move into Jonas' aunt's house, but Jonas, still irate over being mistaken as a member of the Order, would prefer to pretend that it's just him and Daniel.

"Sorry Jonas": Bree admits that Jonas has every right to hate her right now, but still tries to reconcile with him. She also discusses the stuff Jonas found out about his parents.

"Beach Bum": Daniel goes to the beach, films some scenic shots and talks about how he's been feeling and everything that's been happening lately.

"Flesh Wound": Daniel returns from the beach to Jonas and Bree yelling from the bathroom, and discovers that Jonas has a giant cut on his hand. Daniel and Jonas both want to go to a hospital but Bree argues that the Order will track them if they go there.

"My Hand Hurts": Jonas discusses what he found in his aunt's office and talks briefly about the events of the last few days.

"Aunt Alex": Jonas and Daniel are heading to the airport to pick up Jonas' aunt Alex. On the way, they talk about Bree's very recent departure to hang out with Tachyon and about how to talk to Alex about the events of the last two days, and about Daniel's romantic interest in Alex. They pick Alex up and chat briefly before the video ends.

"Training Hard": Bree stands in the woods and announces that she's at one of Tachyon's camps. She says Tachyon's been training her on how to be a badass. She talks about her time at the camp, how she's been feeling, and recent events with Jonas and Daniel.

"On The Hot Seat": Daniel "interviews" Alex to help her out with her fashion business, and they discuss what she does in her business. Eventually Jonas shows up to break it up.

"Uncle Dan": Daniel and Jonas go to a fashion industry party being hosted by one of Alex's friends. They talk to the camera briefly, then Daniel leaves to start mingling. After filming Damien hitting on Jonas and Alex and David getting into a spat, he hands the camera to Jonas and he takes over filming. He talks to a few people and films Daniel getting friendly with Alex. After Daniel gets drunk, Jonas leads him out of the party and calls a cab, and the two of them talk while they wait.

"Uncle Dan (D-Bone Remix)"note : We see Daniel's perspective on the party's events. It's most of the footage he took before giving Jonas the camera. He meets with various guests, and ends up blundering into a meeting with a guy who's very peevish about getting interrupted when talking to his companion.

"Lucy!?!?!": Bree points out a photo in the background of "Uncle Dan" showing Alex and Lucy together. She says Tachyon told her that Alex's scrapbook is her keeping a record of the deaths of people she helped the Order take out. She warns the guys and says she's coming back.

"Alex Is...": Daniel and Alex are flipping through Alex's photo album, chatting about her photos and her former photography career, until Jonas storms in after seeing Bree's video and confronts Alex about it.

"Truckstop Reunion": The video cuts between the perspectives of Daniel and Jonas driving to pick up Bree and Bree at the truckstop waiting. Daniel and Jonas discuss the revelations at the end of the previous episode and get lost on the way, while Bree talks to the camera about her plans to become a truck driver. Daniel and Jonas arrive and pick up Bree, and they chat and drive off to their next destination.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Misnaming: Carla calls Jonas "Joseph" upon meeting him for the first time in "Uncle Dan".
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Played for Laughs in "Aunt Alex" when Daniel asks Jonas several questions about what he's going to tell his aunt that he doesn't have a proper answer for, culminating in this:
Daniel: What are you gonna tell her about your hand?
    Jonas: Ah... I don't think I'm gonna...
Jonas: (looks at Daniel with a smile) Yes, Daniel-san. It is a conundrum.
  • Blatant Lies: In "On The Hot Seat", Daniel tells Alex that the camera's off and he'll tell her when he turns it on.
  • Breather Episode: "Beach Bum" is just Daniel at the beach talking about stuff with no plot stuff happening.
  • Buried Alive: In "Uncle Dan", Jonas threatens to do this to Daniel and Alex if they hook up.
  • Call-Back:
    • Jonas' threat to Daniel in "Aunt Alex" to "go Bree" on him if he hits on Alex, referring to Bree's treatment of Jonas after she thought he was with the Order.
    • In "Training Hard", Bree breaks out P. Monkey for the first time since "Purple Monkey Returns".
    • Also in "Training Hard", Bree says when she saw a spider in her tent, she almost did a "Proving Science Wrong" right there.
  • Comically Missing the Point: In "Uncle Dan", Daniel talks about how fun it would be if he ended up being Jonas' uncle if things worked out with Alex, then Jonas threatens to bury them if this happens, leading to this:
Daniel: Think about it, think about it. It'd be fun.
Jonas: It would not be fun, Daniel! That would not be fun.
Daniel: No, it wouldn't be fun being buried, it would be fun being your uncle!
  • The Conspiracy: In his report, Jonas' dad framed the Order as one of these, involving politicians and corporate executives. The accusations understandably disturb Bree a bit when she talks about it in "Sorry Jonas".
  • Déjà Vu: Daniel jokingly asks in "On The Road Again" if the others have deja vu from them traveling along the coast yet again.
  • Directionless Driver: Jonas gets very lost on the way to the truckstop in "Truckstop Reunion", briefly ending up on a road with no truckstop anywhere in sight.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: As Jonas peruses the food table for the second time in "Uncle Dan", we see a shot of Damien, who was flirting with Jonas earlier, sucking on a chicken bone...
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Carl and Sonia show up in "Uncle Dan (D-Bone Remix)" long before they actually become relevant.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: In "Uncle Dan", Jonas gets hit on by both Damien and Carla, the latter even suggesting he come to her room after the party.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: This exchange in "Alex Is..." right before Jonas storms in, and minutes before it's confirmed she backstabbed her own brother in the old resistance (they're talking about her photography):
Daniel: How could you do that? How could you just give up something you love?
Alex: Oh, it's easier than you'd think.
  • Foreshadowing: Alex warns Jonas in "Alex Is..." that the Order is going to be coming after Bree soon, which it turns out they really should've paid attention to...
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: At 1:51 in "Uncle Dan", in the lower-left corner, you can see a framed photo of Alex with Lucy. This was pointed out by Bree in "Lucy!?!?!".
  • Improvised Lockpick: Bree films Jonas in "Sorry Jonas" trying to use of these to break into his aunt's office, but he doesn't have any success. He has more success later in "Flesh Wound", but at the cost of an injury.
  • Jerkass: A couple characters at the party in "Uncle Dan" and "Uncle Dan (D-Bone Remix)":
    • Finn the musician blows Daniel off straight away in "D-Bone Remix", flatly telling him to leave him alone if he doesn't know his music.
    • Carl is just a total jackass to Daniel when he interrupts his conversation with Sonia in "D-Bone Remix". It may not have been the most polite thing, but Carl decides to just take it a level of petty revenge, which was seen when he hassled Daniel at the end of "Uncle Dan" as Daniel and Jonas were leaving.
  • Key Under the Doormat: Subverted in "On The Road Again". Jonas says there's a hidden key, but it's "well hidden" so he has to jump the fence and break in the backdoor instead.
  • Kick the Dog: Right after claiming Jonas' parents are in fact still alive in "Alex Is...", Alex ends her speech by suggesting his parents are happy and don't care about him anymore.
  • La Résistance: Bree explains in "Sorry Jonas" that Jonas' parents ran one of these to oppose the Order.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Daniel in "Beach Bum" talks about how living on the run sucks, then says this:
Daniel: Unless I turn this into some sort of documentary or something, I don't know. If only the Order paid us, paid us to be on the run, that would be great.
  • The Mole: Alex is revealed in "Alex Is..." to have been working for the Order for years.
  • Mood Whiplash: "Flesh Wound": The transition from the craziness and tension inside the car to the comical reveal that they took Jonas to the vet and checked him in as Fido certainly qualifies.
  • Must Have Caffeine: From "On The Hot Seat": Alex starts her work day by ordering one hell of a coffee drink.
Alex: ...[G]o to my favorite coffee place and order a "Depth Charge", which is two shots of espresso in a big black coffee, and I usually finish drinking it before I get back to my car.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: Jonas warns Daniel off his aunt Alex in a few episodes. Unfortunately for him, the attraction is mutual.
Jonas: Do not hit on my aunt. If you hit on my aunt, I will go Bree on you.
  • Open Heart Dentistry: Bree and Daniel end up taking Jonas to the vet to get his hand fixed in "Flesh Wound".
  • Pass the Popcorn: Daniel's attitude toward Bree and Jonas' spats, as stated in "Beach Bum".
Daniel: If you had free pay-per view, would you tell the cable company?
  • P.O.V. Sequel: "Uncle Dan" shows a big-time fashion industry party primarily from Jonas' perspective, while "Uncle Dan (D-Bone Remix)" shows it from Daniel's.
  • Pretentious Pronunciation: From "Uncle Dan (D-Bone Remix)": Claudia's name is pronounced "CLOUD-ia".
  • Product Placement: The first instance of it on the show occurs in "Truckstop Reunion", involving Bree showing off Ice Breakers Sours Gum to Daniel and Jonas and asking if they want any.
  • Pun-Based Title: "On The Hot Seat": On the "hot seat" being a high-pressure position (like being asked live questions) and Alex being hot.
  • Saying Too Much: Daniel ends up running afoul of this late in the interview in "On The Hot Seat". After poking fun at how boring Alex's job is, this exchange happens, which manages to be surprisingly tense:
Alex: Oh, what? Like your life is so exciting.
Daniel: Well, actually, we're on the run f... uh...
    Alex: What?
    Daniel: Nothing.
Alex: No, seriously. You're on the run from what?
Daniel: (long pause; low voice) Um, the Order. It's complicated. Just whatever. Nevermind.
  • Shout-Out: The title of "Flesh Wound" is one to the black knight scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, where the knight insists his increasingly grave wounds are merely flesh wounds.
  • Silent Treatment: Played with every which way across "On The Road Again" and "Sorry Jonas".
    • "On The Road Again" has Jonas refusing to speak to Bree or even directly acknowledge her existence.
    • The first half of "Sorry Jonas" has Bree initially call what Jonas is doing to her this trope, before correcting herself and noting that he talks to her, just only with insults, and cuts to some unused footage from the last episode:
Jonas: Is there like a mosquito in here or something? I hear this buzzing. Bzzzz! (cut) You know, I think when we stopped, one of those small dogs got in the car. It's like yeppp, yeppp, yeppp, yeppp! They're the worst.
    • Then at the end of "Sorry Jonas" when Bree is trying to apologize to Jonas again, she initially ignores him by saying she didn't think he was talking to her, then she actually gets Jonas to say something to her without telling her off or insulting her.
  • Squick: Played for laughs In-Universe in "Uncle Dan" when Jonas is watching Daniel flirt with Alex.
Jonas: I think I'm gonna throw up. (struggles for a moment) No, it's cool, it's cool, it— (swallows) it went back down.
  • Sunglasses at Night: Lucy wearing her sunglasses while having the picture seen during the party taken certainly qualifies.
  • Tell Him I'm Not Speaking to Him: Jonas is so mad at Bree he refuses to acknowledge her existence (aside from being an annoyance) so Bree talks to Daniel instead.
Bree: Daniel, since I don't exist, apparently, will you please tell your oafish friend that, I'm sorry, and where are we going?
Jonas: Oh my God, Dan—did you hear—I swear I just heard it and it—I think I heard someone saying "oafish".
  • There Are No Coincidences: Jonas expresses doubt in "My Hand Hurts" at the possibility of it being a coincidence that all of the people in his aunt's scrapbook, who were likely members of La Résistance, all died or went missing under suspicious circumstances.
  • Totally Radical:
    • Lampshaded in "Training Hard".
Bree: Anyway Jonas, crazy mad props on cracking your aunt's stash. (cut) Did I really just say "crazy mad props"? God, what is wrong with me?
    • The title of "Uncle Dan (D-Bone Remix)", of course.
  • Troll:
    • As seen in "Uncle Dan (D-Bone Remix)", Daniel actively encourages Damien to purse Jonas, much to the latter's chagrin.
    • Bree holds out a few pieces of gum to Daniel and Jonas after they say they want some... and then pulls them away at the last second and puts them all in her mouth.
Daniel: We're not friends anymore. That's it.
  • Unwanted Assistance: In "Flesh Wound", Jonas does not appreciate Bree's attempts to help by putting pressure on his wound or offers to try and stitch it up herself.
  • Your Little Dismissive Diminutive: In "Alex Is...", Alex refers to Bree as Jonas and Daniel's "little friend" twice during her ending speech.

"I said the same thing 'cause I'm sorry too. I really am, too, I mean after, after what happened with my aunt, I can... really understand how... confusing things can get when someone that you trust betrays you."
