Recap / Legends Of Tomorrow S 7 E 8 Paranoid Android

Go To

The Legends, now a lot nastier and grittier, are hunting down "robotic duplicates" of themselves, but they discover that they themselves are the robots, created by Bishop's clone of Gideon, who are to hunt down the real Legends. Robo!Sara discovers this and attempts to free her comrades.

Tropes:

  • All for Nothing:
    • Gwyn and Zari's efforts to save the Chernobyl population from radiation sickness as it turn out.
    • Sara's attempt to save her comrades and become a true good guy, when Zari betrays her and Gideon reprograms her to be a ruthless assassin once again.
    • Dr. Irina Petrov spends six years of her newfound life in hiding, then comes up with a way to speed up safely disposing of radioactive decay. However, Gideon used a reprogrammed Robo!Sara to kill her before she can give her plans to the proper authorities.
  • And Knowing Is Half the Battle: Robo!Nate stars in a parody about bullying for a couple of kids, but they apologize to each other pretty quickly and spend the rest of the time mocking Nate for his huge "John Cena arms", even deciding to attack him with the bat to see if he's as strong as Cena.
  • Arc Words: "Time is like cement." Every time it's said, the one on the receiving end is confused, asking what it means, which no one could provide an answer for.
  • Big Eater: In stark contrast to his real counterpart, Robo!Gary is constantly itching to eat people, even his own teammates' corpses.
  • Blood Knight: The Robo!Legends have a near sadistic glee carrying out their often lethal mission of correcting the timeline.
  • Body-Count Competition: Robo!Behrad and Robo!Spooner constantly compete over who gets the most kills.
  • Butt-Monkey: Robo!Gary, because some things always stay the same. He constantly gets belittled and made fun of, particularly by Robo!Nate.
  • Composite Character: In a way. Zari's android doppelganger combines elements of both Zari 1.0 (her hacking skills) and Zari 2.0 (her behavior and speech patterns, including her early habit of calling Gideon "Gidget").
  • The Dragon: Dr. Ava for Evil Gideon, being in on the true identities of their team from the very beginning.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Despite being programmed to be an evil doppelganger, even Robo!Sara is appalled that the weapons Dr. Ava gave them inflicted radiation poisoning upon their victims. She also considers threatening someone's family to be going too far.
  • Evil Knockoff: The Robo!Legends are shallow copies of the real Legends, missing most of the powers Gideon couldn't replicate and only driven to carry out her orders as violently as possible.
  • Evil Sounds Raspy: Robo!Nate, to an extreme degree.
  • Heel–Face Door-Slam: Robo!Sara is denied her chance at redemption when Gideon either reprograms her or destroys her and makes a new, more ruthless version.
  • Heroic Build: Absolutely exaggerated by Robo!Nate, who gets directly compared to John Cena by some kids at the end.
  • Heroic Willpower: Something Robo!Sara has in common with her real counterpart, as she stays quiet during a surgery, pretending to be under anesthesia.
  • Ignored Epiphany: Even after hearing the truth about their identities from Robo!Sara, the team is very quick to just get back to business as usual when Robo!Zari and Evil Gideon convince them.
  • Kitschy Local Commercial: The final scene shows Robo!Nate in a very crappy Public Service Announcement against bullying.
  • Knight Templar: The Robo-Legends are absolutely convinced by the righteousness of their actions, to the point where they act outright annoyed when General Kalashnik reacts with understandable horror about them threatening his family.
  • Mad Scientist: Dr. Ava in a nutshell. She shows absolutely zero emotions while cutting up her own teammates.
  • Mythology Gag: Robo!Nate uses the name Citizen Steel, rather than just Steel, which is the name used by Nathan Heywood in the comics.
  • Out of Focus: Aside from alternate angles of last episode's ending and some brief archival footage, the proper Legends do not show up at all in the episode.
  • Perspective Flip: The start of the episode shows the attack from the last episode from the Robo-Legends' perspective, even starting out with an Opening Narration by Robo!Sara.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • During the opening scene, Spooner insists on waiting for the civilians to clear out until they attack. However, once she's told that civilian deaths are part of the correct history, she has zero problem with making them come back.
    • Sara also, see Even Evil Has Standards. This eventually proves to be her doom.
  • Robotic Reveal: For Robo!Sara, when she sees Dr. Ava removing a metal joint from her body.
  • Secret Test: The Chernobyl mission was Gideon making sure that the superficial personality traits of the actual Legends didn't interfere with the Robo Legends doing what they're told, however appalling. Most of them pass, but Robo!Sara turns out to be too Sara to comply.
  • Special Edition Title: The episode has its own intro with the Robo-Legends.
  • Spotting the Thread: Sara is quick in figuring out that something isn't right, and with Robo!Zari's help, she quickly discovers the truth about herself and the team. Unfortunately, Dr. Ava is also quick to spot the irregularities in her behavior, such as missing a target.
  • Stock Scream: One of the Russians lets out a Wilhelm scream when Robo!Nate throws him into the air.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: In stark contrast to their real counterparts' Official Couple status, Robo!Sara and Dr. Ava can barely stand each other.
  • Threat Backfire: When Nate threatens the General's life, the man smirks that a quick death by a super-punch is preferable to slow death by a nuclear meltdown. Subverted when they threaten his family to go along with this.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: The opening narration is done by Robo!Sara, who explains how she and the Legends were gathered to stop their evil robotic duplicates from altering the timeline. Naturally, she and Robo!Zari discover to their horror that they're the androids. The rest of the team get informed, but they shrug it off much faster, especially when offered the chance to be upgraded.
  • Villain Episode: This episode is focused on the android doppelgangers of the Legends, who were created by Gideon to hunt down the real Legends.
  • We Can Rebuild Him: Dr. Ava quickly builds new bodies for Robo!Astra and Robo!Zari at the beginning of the episode.
  • We Can Rule Together: When Robo!Zari is about to shut Evil Gideon down, the latter offers to make her even smarter in the next upgrade. Sadly, she accepts and even convinces the rest of the team to not listen to Robo!Sara.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Robo!Sara received one from the head of the Chernobyl plant, who angrily asks how they can call themselves superheroes given what they're doing.
