Recap / Legends of Tomorrow S6E14 "There Will Be Brood"

Go To

John and Bishop steal the Waverider and travel back to 1925 Texas to find the Fountain of Imperium. Spooner and Astra, who were on board the ship when it was taken, attempt to stop the two when they find the truth of Spooner's origin. Meanwhile, Sara and the others try to contact Kayla to take them to the past while Bishop reveals his plans.

Tropes:

  • Actually a Doombot: John leaves an astral projection of himself in his house as a distraction to give Bishop time to hijack the Waverider.
  • Alien Invasion: Bishop's Evil Plan — to destroy the Fountain so Earth can be taken over by hostile alien forces.
  • All Your Base Are Belong to Us: Bishop hijacks the Waverider, and shuts Gideon down. Without Gideon, Astra and Spooner (who were still onboard) couldn't use the ship to return to the present.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Bishop poisons John and destroys the Fountain that was protecting Earth from any invaders.
  • Beethoven Was an Alien Spy: To the nth degree. It turns out that in the Earth-Prime Arrowverse, the entire fungi kingdom of life are actually an alien species, planted on Earth to safeguard it against alien threats, imbuing children with powerful magic to do so.
  • Benevolent Precursors: The aliens who planted the Fountain, acting as a barrier from more hostile invaders.
  • Call-Back: To hide from Bishop and Constantine, Astra turns both Spooner and herself into inanimate objects; Astra is a snowglobe, while Spooner is a fork again.
  • Character Death: John Constantine.
  • Cliffhanger: John is betrayed by Bishop and dies, along with the Fountain, which means that Earth is now in open to Alien Invasion. And Mick is caught in an explosion on the Waverider while trying to save his children.
  • Deep South: John, Bishop, Spooner and Astra end up in Texas, 1925.
  • Drunk on the Dark Side: Literally, in this case. John's addiction unleashes his worst self, who is in the driver's seat for most of the episode.
  • Evil Is Not a Toy: John's attempt to work with the Big Bad to help get his magic back ends with the latter betraying and murdering him.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Spooner's mom is prepared to die for her daughter to become what she is meant to be. Spooner has other ideas...
  • Fungus Humongous: The fountain is a giant, glowing mushroom.
  • Hero Killer: Bishop poisons John and seemingly also blows Mick up.
  • Hope Spot: It looks like John is finally getting his magic back, then Bishop reveals that it is actually poison he is feeling.
  • Idiot Ball: The rest of the Legends get stranded in the present when the Waverider is hijacked, because nobody thought to bring a time courier along. Lampshaded when Nate wonders why they ever go anywhere without one.
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: Everyone, especially Astra and Zari, trying to bring some sense to John. It doesn't work.
  • Immediate Sequel: Zari enters the mansion right after John made his deal with Bishop.
  • Kick the Dog:
    • John rants to everyone that he was never a Legend. He also tells Astra that her mother would roll in her grave if she knew that Astra is using the same magic that drove her from John.
    • Bishop gloating to John that he is collateral damage. Also, he leaves a bomb on the Waverider in the same room as Mick's children.
  • Laser-Guided Karma:
    • Subverted, then downplayed. John tries to trick Bishop the way he had tricked others in the past, only for Bishop to reveal that he knew what John planned, and turns it on him. While John has behaved badly in this episode, he doesn't deserve to die at the hands of Bishop.
    • Spooner makes Doc experience all the pain she suffered because of his actions.
  • Love Cannot Overcome: John's issues and eventual death put an end to his relationship with Zari.
  • Love Confession: Mick confesses his feelings to Kayla.
  • Magic Mushroom: The Fountain of Imperium is revealed to be mushrooms, every fungal species, which are aliens and are aware enough to choose which person to bestow their immense magical power unto.
  • My Friends... and Zoidberg: John points out how he never really felt like he truly belonged in the Legends.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: John realizes the horrible consequences his actions wrought while he lies dying.
  • Newspaper Dating: Astra grabs a newspaper to learn that she and Spooner are in 1925.
  • Nothing Personal: What Bishop tells John as he lies dying.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: Bishop's previous claims about trying to save the world fall flat when he reveals he's actively seeking to destroy it.
  • An Offer You Can't Refuse: After Gloria declines his attempts to buy her land repeatedly, the oil baron decides he's going to have to kill her instead.
  • Out-Gambitted: John's attempt to betray Bishop gets him killed.
  • Out of Focus: Only Spooner, Astra and Constantine are given significant spotlight. With the Waverider stolen (again), the rest of the Legends are stranded in the present for most of the episode.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech:
  • The Reveal: Spooner was never abducted from Earth, by Bishop or any of his proxies. She ran away when a mob of oil men who wanted her family's land killed her mother, in Frontier times, and was taken in by the Fountain of Imperium. The Fountain itself is revealed to not be a literal fountain of water, but is actually all mushrooms on Earth, which are an alien species who were placed there to protect the planet from alien threats. The reason Spooner could connect with the last child empowered by them is because she was empowered herself.
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: The real reason the Fountain rejected John is because it knew on some level that he was destined to destroy it. This just forced the circumstances for said destiny to be fulfilled.
  • Shout-Out: The episode title is a reference to There Will Be Blood.
  • Shut Up, Kirk!: John repeatedly shuts down Astra's attempts to get him to turn back.
  • So Proud of You: In his dying breath, Constantine tells Astra "You're my greatest failure... and my biggest accomplishment." He also tells her that Natalie would have felt the same way.
  • Stealth Pun: As noted above, the Fountain of Imperium is a literal magic mushroom.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome:
    • John's addiction ends in a bad way, in this case death.
    • As the newbies, both Astra and Spooner have no idea how to pilot the Waverider. Also, Astra doesn't have a driver's license, due to growing up in hell.
  • Synchronization: Exploited by Bishop to kill the Fountain of Imperium through John. He uses Spooner's blood to develop a serum that fakes the worthiness necessary to forge a connection with the Fountain, which is poisoned to kill John and the Fountain through him.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork:
    • Kayla only teams up with the Legends to save her kids.
    • John makes it very clear to Bishop that he hates him, and is only working with him to get his magic back.
  • Tricked Out Time: Spooner saves her mother, and has Astra take her past self to the Fountain so she’ll still go to the future and become the person she is.
  • Uncertain Doom:
    • The last we see of Mick, he is caught in the blast of a bomb set up by Bishop when trying to save the last egg.
    • Spooner, who is connected to the Fountain, falls to the same poison as John.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Partially subverted. John knows that Bishop is using him; however, he is under the impression that Bishop wants to use the Fountain for himself. He is then blindsided when Bishop poisons him and reveals that he now wants to destroy the world instead.
  • We Need a Distraction: John uses an Astral Projection of himself to stall the team while he and Bishop steal the Waverider.
  • The Wild West: Despite being 1925, the setting is still a small Texan town, rather than New York or California.
  • World Tree: The real Fountain of Imperium is a towering mushroom planted by Benevolent Precursors that acts as a barrier to protect Earth from more hostile aliens.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Bishop puts the Legends in a simple yet Deadly Game with Mick and Kayla's eggs at stake.
  • You Can't Fight Fate: Spooner's mom feels this way after hearing from Astra about what Spooner is destined to do. Spooner has other ideas.
