Go To

The Legends must deal with Bishop's unexpected arrival onboard the ship, while Mick goes into labor. Meanwhile, Zari and Astra try to determine what Constantine is keeping from them.

Tropes:

  • Ambiguously Evil: Throughout the episode, it's kept genuinely ambiguous whether Bishop really has or hasn't reformed, with both the Legends themselves and the viewers being thrown for a loop each time. It's not until they discover that Bishop purposely induced Mick's labor so he could steal his earpiece that it's clear that no, he really is still a bad guy.
  • Body Horror: Mick giving birth to Kayla's babies would have involved them coming out of his ears, but they end up being born out of his nose. His head is writhing throughout the whole process, including his eyes bulging out of his head as they work their way out.
  • Bottle Episode: As with the previous episode, this episode mostly takes place on the Waverider, with a few scenes taking place in Constantine's house.
  • The Bus Came Back: Bishop returns in this episode.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Ava's fascination with psychotic killers is brought up again, as she wants to explore Bishop's psyche.
    • Zari and Astra approach Spooner to get the true details of her mission to Spain with Constantine, and they learn of the latter wiping key events from her memories.
    • Sara telling Bishop "Destiny is so last season!" is a nod to her being a Blind Seer in the previous season.
  • Deal with the Devil: At the end of the episode, John Constantine is taken over by his dark side and makes a deal with Bishop to get his powers back.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Once again, allusions to substance addiction is brought up regarding Constantine's condition, and Zari, Spooner and Astra even stage an intervention.
  • Exact Words: Gideon analyzed that Bishop's genetic makeup is 100% human. Later, the Legends find out that it's because he spliced himself with 6% of Sara's DNA.
  • Expecting Someone Taller: The Legends are disappointed with how ordinary Bishop actually looks.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Sara and Ava are going over Bishop's suggestions for wedding dresses/food, both agreeing with every one and Sara saying it's like "Bishop is reading my mind." Ava then checks a nearby console...
Ava: Hon... it's not "like" that... it is that.
  • Express Delivery: Sara cooks up a brew that Bishop suggested is supposed to help with Mick's pregnancy. According to Gary, the brew actually made Mick go into labor early instead.
  • Falsely Reformed Villain: Bishop pretends to have turned over a new leaf and is now desperately searching for a place to belong with family, among the Legends. It's all an act, though to what true end is currently unknown.
  • Foreshadowing: Gary telling Mick that he's having contractions earlier than expected. This is before he finds out about the brew Sara and Ava gave Mick.
  • Gambit Roulette: Had Gary discovered the ingredients of the cocktail Bishop instructed Sara and Ava to whip up for Mick earlier in the episode his scheme would have been unraveled, so Bishop is fortunate this did not happen until it was too late for them to do anything about it.
  • Genetic Memory: To exaggerated levels when Bishop is suddenly a martial artist on par with Sara because he spliced himself with six percent of her DNA when cloning himself. Apparently, that time spent cloning her involved isolating the genes that determined her fighting skills. It gets a bit more ludicrous that said genetic memory also includes Gideon's override codes.
  • Gilligan Cut: Ava telling Bishop that John is fine cues a cut of him going through violent withdrawal.
  • Immediate Sequel: Starts right where the last episode left off with Sara confronting a recently recreated Bishop.
  • Internal Reveal: Spooner learns that Constantine erased her memories of him taking vampire blood and Astra restores them at the behest of Zari.
  • Love Cannot Overcome: Zari genuinely loves John, which is why his addiction hurts her so much, but she's still willing to help him detox and work on their relationship. John loves her back, but is ultimately full of too much self-loathing to give up holding onto some magical power, even if it's killing him.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Bishop spends the episode trying to find ways to worm himself into the Legends' good graces. He feigns redemption to Sara, preys on Ava's insecurities to garner sympathy and ultimately manages to sneak a conversation with John to cut a deal for his freedom in exchange for helping him get his magic back.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero:
    • Zari is so much more concerned about John than Bishop, she freely speaks about the former with Spooner and Astra in front of the latter. This results in Bishop coming up with a plan to use John to get what he wants.
    • No-one actually disposes of the vampire blood after John throws it in the trash bin.
  • Override Command: The genetic material Bishop took from Sarah somehow gives him access to Gideon's override commands, which he uses to escape his cell.
  • Play-Along Prisoner: Bishop could've left any time, due to having Sara's memories of the access code, and does so once Mick goes into labor.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: John initially rejects Bishop's offer to help get his magic back without a second thought. Unfortunately, John's Enemy Within has other ideas.
  • Split-Personality Takeover: The dark side of Constantine that incarnated as the Beast in the last episode is still taunting him over his desire for magical power. At the end it forces John to keep drinking vampire blood.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome:
    • John struggles with withdrawal throughout the episode... and fails miserably due to self-loathing. This shows that it is very hard to get clean the first time around.
    • Someone who grew up without a real family is going to struggle with the idea of having one of her own. Ava is hit hard with this, thanks to Bishop.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: Bishop successfully preys on Ava's insecurities about being a clone with no family trying to start one with Sara to get her sympathy, claiming to not have a family himself.
  • Virtue Is Weakness: Bishop thinks that humility is a ludicrous and hypocritical concept.
  • Wham Episode: John fails to deal with his addiction. Bishop manipulates everyone by inducing Mick's pregnancy to get to his comms and manipulate one of them to his side. While everyone does figure this out, it is too late: he gets to John by promising him the return of his magic.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: After knocking out Mick last episode, Kayla is nowhere left to be found for the rest of this episode.
