Recap / Legends of Tomorrow S6E12 "Bored On Board Onboard"

Go To

The Legends are ready to get back home, but after Constantine overloaded Gideon, they are going to have to go the old-fashioned way to preserve the ship's energy. Trying to entertain themselves, tensions start to grow high, so Gary suggests playing a murder mystery game to pass the time. Constantine decides to make the game more interesting, which makes Behrad worried about him but is met with pushback from Zari. Meanwhile, Rory and Gary deal with an unexpected guest that arrives on the Waverider...

Tropes:

  • Art Initiates Life: "Beast/Slayers" becomes a true game of life and death after John's spell.
  • Blood from the Mouth: John is fighting with this throughout the episode; his character in the game is the "Consumptive Doctor" with tuberculosis and they become more like those characters the longer the game lasts.
  • Brain Bleach: Once they get out of the game, one of the first things the Legends sees is "Lefty" slithering away, resulting in a grossed-out reaction from them all.
  • The Bus Came Back: Kayla and Bishop return in this episode.
  • Chekhov's Boomerang: The device in the medbay that regrows limbs reappears for the first time since Season 1, with Kayla using it to bring Bishop Back from the Dead
  • Continuity Nod: While speaking about possible wedding guests, Sara and Ava mention Barry, Iris, and Black Siren.
  • Death by Genre Savviness: At the start of the game, Ava boasts that she's drawn up a list of exactly who the Beast would be for each possible first kill. Naturally, she is killed first before she can share this.
  • Decoy Protagonist: Ava is cast as the Sherlock Holmes caricature in the game, yet she winds up being the first victim.
  • Dwindling Party: Ava is the first to die, followed swiftly by Nate and then Sara. Then the Beast picks off Spooner and Astra, leaving only Zari, Behrad, and John.
  • Enemy Within: The Beast is a manifestation of Constantine's dark side.
  • Faceā€“Heel Turn: Kayla is revealed to be under Bishop's command now, since he saved her.
  • Fictional Counterpart: "Beast/Slayers" is (as Nate points out) another version of Werewolf/Mafia.
  • Genre Savvy: When making wedding invitation lists, Ava puts Barry Allen on the "better that they don't know we're getting married until it's too late" list. When Sara asks why, as Barry is one of her best friends, Ava points out that if he and Iris attend, the wedding is bound to be blown up by a supervillain.
  • Here We Go Again!: Since she was the first to "die", Ava was completely unaware of the horrors the others experienced playing Gary's game and wants a replay. Fortunately it's defied by the others vetoing her.
  • Immediate Sequel: Takes place after "The Final Frame" with the team returning from the bowling alley still in bowling clothes.
  • Internal Reveal: Mick tells Kayla he's carrying her eggs.
  • Let's Split Up, Gang!: Behrad points out the stupidity of it when Spooner and Astra decide to do so.
  • Off the Rails: Happens when Sara attempts to end the game, declaring "Look, I'm the—" but is Killed Mid-Sentence by the Beast. The ending confirms that she originally drew the Beast card and was about to confess.
  • Organ Autonomy: The tentacles of Gary's and Kayla's species apparently have a mind of their own. Gary even calls one of Kayla's tentacles "Lefty".
  • Sealed Evil in a Duel: If the Beast succeeds in killing all the players, the game only restarts all over again, trapping everyone within.
  • Sequel Hook: Sara follows a suspicious noise and walks in on Bishop being reborn.
  • Wham Shot: At the end, Zari is about to wake a sleeping John to tell him she loves him, only to see a large puncture wound on his neck where she stabbed the Beast.
