Recap / Legends of Tomorrow S6E10 "Bad Blood"

Go To

John and Spooner travel to 1939 Spain to obtain the Fountain of Imperium and get John's magic back. Mick has a hard time dealing with being pregnant and connecting with Lita. And the rest of the Legends, save Sara and Ava as they're off preparing for their wedding, have to deal with Gus Gus becoming giant and dangerous.

Tropes:

  • Action Girl: The barmaid who helps John, shooting at the fascists.
  • Actually, I Am Him: John and Spooner suspect that the man at the bar is El Gato himself, as does Noriega. They're correct.
  • All for Nothing: Subverted, John's journey to find the Fountain of Imperium amounted to nothing, but he still gets his magic back, from vampire blood.
  • Artistic License – Religion: Spooner said that her Catholic grandmother used to say "we are saved by faith alone." But that is specifically a Protestant doctrine, not a Catholic one.
  • Berserk Button: Rory gets pissed whenever someone reminds him he's pregnant.
  • Big Damn Heroes: John comes back to the tavern disguised as a priest, saving everybody from being further brutalized by the fascists.
  • Bluff the Impostor: Invoked when John claims to have fought in the Spanish Civil War. When the bar owner presses on how he cleaned his rifle, John (no doubt using stories from history books) is able to bring up how he had to use olive oil on an antiqued weapon and other details like the huge lice there to convince the bar owner they were on the same side.
  • The Bus Came Back: John and Allister Crowley, the latter still trapped in the painting.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The lullaby which Gary, Nate and Behrad sing to Gus-Gus in the beginning and which annoys Spooner later gets cited by the latter in order to have an incantation to transfer Fernando's magic to John.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: El Gato himself is waiting in one of the bars John and Spooner visited, even if they don't find out the exact truth until later.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • When Spooner tells Fernando that superheroes are coming, he mentions the Justice Society of America.
    • Colonel Noriega mentions that the Nazis have looked into the Spear of Destiny and the Loom of Fate in order to win.
  • Cute Mute: Fernando, who seems like a sweet and innocent boy.
  • Deal with the Devil: In the end, John trades Crowley's picture with Noelle in exchange for more Vampire blood.
  • Death Seeker: Mick briefly becomes suicidal out of guilt for leaving Kayla behind.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: The vampire blood essentially acts as steroids for magic. John and Allister even refer to its use as "juicing."
  • "Eureka!" Moment: John is trying to figure out how to save the bar patrons when he hears church bells and hits on the idea of posing as a priest.
  • Fake Ultimate Hero: Downplayed, while El Gato is a quite badass revolutionary, he doesn't have any magical powers - his nephew Fernando was the one that has them.
  • Femme Fatale: Noelle, the female vampire.
  • Ghostapo: No Nazis directly appear, but Colonel Noriega the Spanish fascist is looking for the Fountain of Imperium on their behalf.
  • Hate Sink: Captain Noriega, being a fascist and all.
  • Healing Hands: Fernando heals his uncle from a seemingly fatal shot.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal/I Just Want to Be Special: Spooner is the former, John the latter.
  • I Lied: Lita fakes going into labor to trick Mick into going to the Med Bay, since he could've gone into labor.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • John tells Spooner that he lost his magic.
    • Mick tells Lita that Kayla sacrificed herself on the alien planet.
  • It's All About Me: While John does have some sympathetic reasons for wanting his magic back, overall he acts awfully selfish throughout the episode. In the end, he goes so far as to brainwash Spooner to prevent anyone from learning he used vampire blood.
  • Kick the Dog: Captain Noriega threatens to shoot people until El Gato reveals himself. He later tortures the latter and threatens to do the same to Fernando.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Original Zari lampshades that the standoffish Spooner has new girl on the ship vibes. She's saying this to Astra, who went through a similar arc.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: John brainwashes Spooner in order for her to not tell Zari about him using Vampire blood.
  • Massive Numbered Siblings: Mick carries a total of 48 eggs.
  • Motive Rant: John towards Spooner on why he needs his magic, telling her about experiencing racism, being called a degenerate for being bi and being abused by his father. He needs his magic to break the rules and stick it to the rich and the powerful.
  • Mushroom Samba: When John drinks from the blood bottle, the background becomes warped and full of neon colors, giving off this vibe.
  • Must Be Invited: Noelle, as a vampire, requires an invitation to enter John's house. After that, she can return whenever she wants.
  • Mythology Gag: After Constantine laments that his soul is, again, damned, Spooner quips that he sounds an awful lot like a Catholic for someone who hates church. While Constantine is usually portrayed (as here) as a Nay-Theist, there has been one incarnation who was a Catholic.
  • Only the Chosen May Wield: Transferring Fernando's magic to John fails, as "Only those who are worthy may drink from this fountain."
  • Out of Focus:
    • Sara and Ava are off searching for the perfect wedding spot and don't appear until the end of the episode.
    • Gary is in most of the episode, but has lost his glasses for most of it, so it's more his actor (Adam Tsekhman) than fully Gary himself.
  • Rapid Aging: Gus-Gus becomes subject of this, becoming violent and erratic in the process.
  • The Reveal: Spooner is Catholic.
  • Shout-Out: Spooner makes reference to Alien in regards to Mick's alien pregnancy.
  • Spexico: Nobody from Spain would believe that's Albacete or that El Gato is a Spaniard from 1939. And the shout would not be "!Viva la Revolución!" but "¡Viva la República!" Franco and most of the army were the ones who rebelled against the legitimate government, so its defenders would never hail the "Revolution" that has just managed to bring it down.
