Recap / Learning How to Be a Princess Chapter 11 "The Covention"

Go To

Luz butts heads with Amity when she goes to the covention, while King gets some insight from an oracle.

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Accidental Pun:
Eda: What makes you so certain that Luz will luz, I mean, lose?
  • Adaptation Expansion:
    • It is revealed that King purposefully goaded Luz and Amity into a battle not for his "honor", but because an oracle told him to do so in exchange for information.
    • After Amity runs off, having been outed as a reluctant cheater, she accidentally steps on a mound that catapults her, leading to Luz taking on a Super Mode to save her.
  • The Apprentice: Lord Lovelace was apparently Eda's last apprentice, having given him her favorite prank-based illusion spell book as a birthday gift and tutored him as a favor to his father. Now, Gus is currently his apprentice.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: When Amity knocks King's cupcake out of his hand, Lord Lovelace addresses the reader, excited to see how the whole thing plays out.
"Now that was harsh folks," Lord Lovelace said, turning to the readers, "Let's see what happens next..." He turned the imaginary camera towards Luz and Amity as he lowered his illusion around them, letting the Covention goers watch the scene unfold.
  • Bullet Time: Luz's instinctual magic activates, causing her to momentarily become fast enough to avoid a killing blow from Amity's abomination.
  • Captain Ersatz: The fact that Lord Lovelace's first appearance has him appear as a genie could be a deliberate attempt at making parallels between him and the Genie from Aladdin, as he wears all blue, tends to talk directly to the reader and makes anachronistic jokes that Luz question if people on the Boiling Isles would get, like framing her Wizard Duel with Amity similar to a boxing match.
  • Comm Links: As it turns out, the medallion Belos gave Luz lets him communicate with her.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Lord Lovelace, Leader of the Illusion Coven, is first introduced when an elderly merchant — poorly disguised as Principle Bump — tries selling Luz a lamp containing a Jerkass Genie who declares that he will destroy the Emperor for imprisoning him, only to drop the act when Gus recognizes him, establishing him as an overly-dramatic Trickster Mentor.
  • For Want Of A Nail: While in canon, the covention's Special Guest was Lilith, here it's Emperor Belos, due to Lilith running late due to an important mission.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: It is implied that King's missing horn was caused in an incident where he defended his sister, and thus serves as physical evidence that he is worthy of the throne.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Camila has Eda and Lilith put to work in the pegasus stables (without using their magic) as punishment not only because Eda failed to stop her daughter from entering a Wizard Duel, but also because both sisters cheated and risked the lives of their respective apprentices for the sake of their childish Sibling Rivalry.
  • Post-Stress Overeating: Luz does this before her duel with Amity.
  • Spot the Imposter: When Luz and Amity bump into Principle Bump, Amity immediately sees through the disguise by noticing the various inaccuracies in it, like how the real Bump only refers to people by their surnames and the imposter didn't, as well as the demon-mask on his head is lacking a tail.
  • Teen Genius: Lord Lovelace is the Head of the Illusion Coven and Gus' mentor despite still being a teenager.
