Recap / Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger E 26 Be Careful Of Shaved Ice

Go To

While the Zyurangers are playing tennis, Totpat creates a concoction designed to bring about their end and then contaminates their shaved ice with it. Dan and Mei eat the shaved ice and suffer a sudden personality change, forsaking their roles as Zyurangers and becoming delinquents. Geki, Goushi, and Boi try to stop them, but Totpat explains that Dan and Mei now have evil spirits. While Dan and Mei engage in various criminal acts, Witch Bandora sends down Dora Boogaranan to deal with the remaining Zyurangers. The monster proves to be immune to the Zyurangers' attacks uses a beam projected from its horn to swallow Boi, forcing Geki and Goushi to retreat.

Geki and Goushi convene with Barza and, after some research, find that Dora Boogaranan's weak point is the "Face of Truth". Barza also decides to retrieve a Mandragora; a mystical plant, which he believes will cure Dan and Mei of their affliction. Bandora sends Golems down to stop Barza, but he vanquishes them all with the Mandrake's scream. Meanwhile, Geki and Goushi, believing the "Face of Truth" is Boogaranan's actual face, attack it, but to no avail. Boogaranan swallows Goushi, leaving Geki to fight the monster alone. Barza tracks down Dan and Mei and forces them to drink juice from the Mandragora. The juice doesn't work, but it ends up being the Mandragora's laughter that cures them. The two rush off to help Geki.

Dora Boogaranan prepares to eat Geki, but Dan and Mei arrive in time to stop him. Dan and Mei cut off Boogaranan's horn, but he retaliates by grabbing Geki with his tongue and swallowing him. However, while the monster moves it jaw up, it reveals the "Face of Truth" hidden beneath its neck flaps. Dan allows himself to be eaten so Mei can attack its face while it's exposed, but Totpat arrives and pushes Mei down before she can attack. The only Zyuranger left, Mei flees into the forest and hides from the two as she devises a plan. She then feigns surrender and activates her trap, launching arrows into Boogaranan's neck and freeing the others. Mei then fires an arrow into Boogaranan's mouth, destroying the monster for good. The Zyurangers return to their normal lives, but Dan and Mei are approached by some punks who they had beat up earlier and they beg them to take them under their wing.

Tropes

  • A Day in the Limelight: Totpat take a central role in the episode.
  • Action Girl: One of Mei's finest examples as she rescues all of her friends from Dora Boogaranan and then delivers the killing blow to the monster.
  • Amphibian Assault: The Monster of the Week Dora Boogaranan is a frog monster sent to devour the Zyurangers.
  • Attack Its Weak Point: Dora Boogarana's only weak spot is the "Face of Truth" hidden beneath its neck flaps and it only appears when he swallows someone whole. Otherwise, he's basically invulnerable.
  • Arrow Cam: Mei's final shot that flies through the forest and lands in Dora Boogaranan's mouth, killing the monster.
  • Batman Gambit: Bandora expected Barza to seek out the mandragora and sends Golems to deal with him.
    • Mei plans for Dora Boogaranan to wrap his tongue around her so she can activate her trap and send several arrows flying into his throat.
  • Curbstomp Battle: Dora Boogaranan easily overpowers and eats the Zyurangers through most of the battle. In the end, they turn the tables and dominate the monster with Mei delivering the finishing blow.
  • Defeated and Trophified: When Dora Boogaranan swallows the Zyurangers, an image of their helmet appears on his belly, certifying and serving as a cruel reminder that they have been eaten.
  • Eat Me: Dan allows himself to be eaten by Dora Boogaranan so Mei can deliver the killing shot. However, the plan fails as Totpat knocks Mei down before she can attack, meaning Dan's sacrifice was All for Nothing.
    • Mei utilizes the same tactic as she feigns surrender and allows herself to be ensnared by Boogaranan's tongue, but she mananges to enact her plan and strike the monster's weak spot without actually being eaten.
  • Eating the Enemy: Dora Boogaranan's primary method of eliminating the Zyurangers was to swallow them, which proved quite effective. He devoured his victims in two ways:
    • Transformation Ray: Dora Boogaranan projects a tongue-like beam from his horn that turns the Zyurangers into small orbs for him to swallow. This technique is apparently unblockable.
    • Multipurpose Tongue: Dora Boogaranan uses his long tongue as a lasso to catch the Zyurangers and then yank them into his mouth. He can also use it as a powerful whip.
  • Dwindling Party: Dora Boogaranan eats the Zyurangers one-by-one until only Mei is left.
  • Fantastic Fruits and Vegetables: To cure Dan and Mei, Barza seeks the mythical Mandragora whose shriek can kill anyone that hears it.
  • Feed It a Bomb: Mei finishes off Dora Boogaranan by shooting an arrow into its mouth, causing it to subsequently explode.
  • Getting Eaten Is Harmless: The four eaten Zyurangers seem completely unfazed after being released from Dora Boogaranan's belly and triumphantly join Mei in giving the monster a trouncing.
  • Helpless Kicking: Geki and Dan kick their legs madly as they are swallowed headfirst by Dora Boogaranan.
  • Idiot Ball: After learning that Dora Boogaranan's weakness is its "true face", they assume it means his actual face and never catch on that it means his hidden face. The monster even tells them where it is.
    • Additionally, in a case of Just Eat Him (or "her" in this case), Dora Boogaranan twice had the opportunity to devour Mei and blew it both times. The first time, rather than grabbing Mei with his tongue, he instead used it as a whip to damage her, after which she escaped into the forest. The second time, he actually had his tongue wrapped around her, but hesitated to pull her into his mouth, giving her the opportunity to spring her trap.
  • Mind Manipulation: A unique example as Dan and Mei's personalities change was caused by a liquid poison.
  • Monster of the Week: Dora Boogaranan
  • Mythical Motifs: Averted. Most of the monsters in this series are based mythical creatures or characters (usually Greek), but Dora Boogaranan just seems to be based on a frog. Even its name has no discernible origin.
  • Near-Villain Victory: Dora Boogaranan swallows four of the Zyurangers and severely weakens Mei before nearly doing the same to her.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Dora Boogaranan (and Totpat) fall for Mei's deception as he wraps his tongue around her, allowing her to spring her trap and strike his weak spot, freeing the other Zyurangers. Had he pulled her into his mouth immediately as he had done with Geki and Dan, he likely would've emerged victorious.
  • No-Sell: Dora Boogaranan is immune to basically all of the Zyurangers, including a dual attack from Geki and Goushi's Ryugeki Sword and Mothbreaker.
  • Plot Hole: Debatable. The episode appears to establish that Dora Boogaranan's true face is only exposed while eating someone. But Mei somehow gets around this by just launching some arrows into his neck without him eating anyone.
    • Again, Dora Boogaranan seems a lot more vulnerable when suffering the Zyurangers' onslaught at the end, even though his weak point isn't exposed.
    • Finally, nowhere is it ever established that shooting an arrow into Dora Boogaranan's mouth will cause it to explode, so the killing blow doesn't make much sense.
  • Swallowed Whole: Four of the Zyurangers are swallowed by Dora Boogaranan. Boi and Goushi are turned into energy orbs before being swallowed, and Geki and Dan are simply pulled right into the monster's mouth.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Totpat manages to pull a successful version of the trope after Dora Boogaranann is destroyed.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: After all the build up of curing Dan of the poison alongside Mei, you'd think he would play a bigger role in taking down Dora Boogaranan. At first it does appears that he and Mei will strike a critical blow to the monster with the power of teamwork, but the plan fails and Dan has to be saved with the rest of the Zyurangers with Mei taking center stage.
  • Tampering with Food and Drink: Totpat contaminates the Zyurangers' shaved ice with a poison that turns them evil.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Dan and Mei transition to hoodlums to gangsters.
  • Trap Master: Mei demonstrates she is an exceptional example of this as she devices a trap that successfully launches three arrows into the enemy's neck, all in the span of a few minutes while hiding from Dora Boogaranan and Totpat.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Geki, Goushi, and Boi's reaction to Dan and Mei when they turn into delinquents.
  • The Worf Effect: Geki is swallowed by Dora Boogaranan halfway through the fight.
