Recap / King Of The Hill S 4 E 5 Aisle 8 A

Go To

Connie stays over with the Hills for vacation, when she gets her first period, resulting in her snapping at Bobby and Hank having to help her out.

Tropes:

  • Age-Appropriate Angst: The episode deals with Connie having to adjust to womanhood while having her period and Bobby's reaction to it, leaving him scared since he still hasn't reached puberty yet and sees himself as a kid, while feeling hurt by Connie snapping at him.
  • All Men Are Perverts: Discussed by Minh when she's talking to Connie about how boys only want one thing, even Bobby. Then later when Connie and Bobby make up, she's confused about how he wants one thing and Bobby wants to know what the one thing is.
  • All Periods Are PMS: Connie's first period has her getting incredibly moody, especially towards Bobby. Or as Hank describes it, a time of the month where woman get angry at everything and men are the everything. How they're like a tire fire; trying to put it out will make it worse and the best thing to do is let it burn.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: When Hank talks to Bobby (in his own way) about Connie's time of the month, he starts off the sentence with saying "Bobby, every woman has a period...", then hastily adds on "...of time, every month".
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: With Dale's new premium trash can, he eagerly awaits garbage day. And then it comes where the trash truck grabs it with its mechanical arm and empties it before driving away with the trash can still latched on, depressing Bill and Dale, while Boomhauer vainly chases after it.
  • Comical Overreacting: Hank's ways of trying to help Connie out, with him draping a towel over her and taking her to the hospital when he learns of her period and later on, he has the police escort Peggy out of the school to bring her to the house after Connie asks how to change her tampons.
    • Kahn and Minh also freak when they learn about Connie's situation, cutting their trip short and rushing home as if Connie were dying.
  • Comically Missing the Point: With Joseph and Bobby. Joseph puts it as Connie's Aunt Flo is in town, and Bobby responds it's probably because of her first period.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Peggy is fully unimpressed with Kahn and Minh giving her and Hank a babysitting manual, complete with recipes and pictures of the food.
"Oh, thank goodness. Because I had no idea what scrambled eggs looked like."
    • And then later on, when making macaroni and cheese:
"Minh suggested that I use a spoon. You hear that, Hank? No more burnt hands."
  • Death Is a Sad Thing: Peggy waits for Bobby after school to take him to Whataburger to tell him about what's going on with Connie. Bobby then fears this as the last time Peggy waited for him like this, she told him about goldfish heaven and he freaks out when he doesn't see Ladybird.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: Hank tries to call Peggy to help with Connie while she's in the middle of class and ends up getting her voice-mail:
Female Voiceover: The person you have reached-
Peggy: Hello, this is Peggy Hill. I am so sorry I cannot take your call. Please leave a message.
Female Voiceover: is not available. To leave a message- (Hank hangs up)
  • Disney Death: Played for Laughs after Peggy accidentally runs over Dale's new trash can, touted to be indestructible, and leaves a big dent in it. Dale and Bill cry over it before it reforms back to normal, to the excitement of the guys.
  • Embarrassing Pyjamas: Before his sleepover with Connie, Bobby looks through less-than-ideal pyjamas for his time for Connie. He asks Boomhauer for advice, but he doesn't have any age-appropriate advice for him. He sees ones that have Choo-Choo Trains (which seems to resemble Thomas the Tank Engine) and a onesie saying "Mommy's Little Man" (which is especially worse for him) before he settles on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles pjs. Gets subverted later on after another fight with Connie where he goes into his room and lovingly embraces his "Mommy's Little Man" pjs.
  • False Start: After his first day with Connie where he gets too scared to get close to her, Bobby talks with Joseph. The latter asks if they made out, while the former says "A gentleman does not kiss and tell". Joseph then says that he chickened out and Bobby confirms this, causing doubt in his relationship with Connie and deciding he's going to make the move tonight. But then for him, things go From Bad to Worse.
  • First Period Panic: Connie's first period is quite the trying time for everyone, with Hank going to extremes to help Connie get through this. He even has to go down to Aisle 8A (feminine products), something he abhors.
  • Frivolous Lawsuit: Khan threatens to sue Hank because Connie got her period while under his care, and Hank just shakes it off knowing Kahn has no grounds to sue.
  • Helicopter Parents: Kahn wants to make sure Connie is in a safe environment before leaving her with Hank. He checks to see the smoke detectors are working, as Hank assures him they work, along with having a clamped-down toilet seat and non-slip daisies in each tub. He even goes as far as giving the Hills an entire book about guidelines on how to raise Connie, such as diet, recipes and appropriate reading material. And Kahn even leaves Connie anti-bacterial hand gel and tells her to have it on her body at all times.
  • Heroic BSoD:
    • Throughout the episode, Bobby is depressed and anxious, due to Connie constantly snapping at him. He thinks Connie wants to break up with him, but they make up in the end.
    • Connie goes down Aisle 8A to try and find some tampons, but her overwhelming emotions (and inexperience) make her break down. Hank, who's incredibly uneasy going down the aisle, nevertheless does so and helps Connie out, paying for everything.
  • Idiot Ball: Hank is quite ill-prepared to deal with Connie's first period. He tells Connie he took a required OSHA course, asks her if she's ever tied a tourniquet and even takes her to the hospital. And while at the hospital, he's told he has to buy Connie her supplies. While Hank is incredibly squeamish about feminine issues, you would at least expect him to have some common sense throughout this ordeal.
  • It's All My Fault: Bobby has a brief moment of this, blaming himself for Connie's period due to his hormones being too close to her hormones.
  • Jerkass Ball: Due to PMS making her irritable, Connie gets pretty moody, especially with Bobby, who easily gets the worst of it.
  • Jerkass Realization: Connie feels bad for being rude to Bobby and not knowing why.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: A variation. At the end, when Bobby tells Hank Connie may break up with him because she's angry at him, Hank explains that all women have a "period of time in the month" when they are angry at anything with usually men being the "anything." When Bobby asks how to deal with that, Hank responds: "it's like a tire fire, trying to extinguish it only makes it worse, the only thing you can do is let it burn itself out." The episode ends with Connie telling Bobby that the symptoms of a period usually go away in two days, and Bobby happily tells her he'll talk to her then, and goes back home.
  • Lesser of Two Evils: Played with. When Kahn and Minh have to decide which of the neighbors Connie should stay with, asking which is the lesser evil, they witness Hank refusing to climb into the new trash can, while Bill, Dale and Boomhauer pile in there.
  • Little "No": After Peggy gets home when Hank had her taken out of school due to an "emergency," she tells him that she'll take of everything, including talking to Bobby about Connie getting her period:
Hank: I don't think Bobby should know about this. It's bad enough that I know about this.
Peggy: Do you want to be in charge, Hank?!
    Hank: (defeated) No.
  • Moment Killer: During their first night together, Bobby hints to Connie about cuddling and she seems interested to do so, but he chickens out at the last moment. Then the next day when he finally builds up courage to make his moves, Connie rebuffs him, due to her beginning her period.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Hank's startled scream after Connie writes her note telling him she's just had her first period.
    • Hank's startled face when Connie asks him how to change a tampon. Leading him to have Peggy escorted home by the police.
    • Then Kahn during his speech in Hawaii when he gets the note telling him what happened, making he and Minh rush for home.
  • Title Drop: Aisle 8A is where Hank and Connie go to get their Connie's tampons, which is an area Hank was previously too squeamish to go into.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Kahn is upset at Hank for Connie's period problems instead of helping her out, threatening to sue him and saying Hank ruined his life.
