Dance

"Be careful of charity and kindness, lest you do more harm with open hands than with a clenched fist."
Kreia

As Jaune gets ready to go out with Weiss to the Beacon Dance, all is not what it seems.

Tropes in this chapter include:

  • Be Careful What You Wish For: While asking Weiss out to dance, Jaune is so afraid of being rejected that he internally prays "to the Brothers, to the Spirits, to any god out there willing to listen" and mentally chants "Please say yes Weiss. Please say yes. Say yes!" His desperate wish is granted in one of the most twisted ways imaginable as he accidentally mind-tricks Weiss into falling in love with him without realizing it.
  • "Be Quiet!" Nudge: Ren nudges Nora to be quiet when she bitterly snarks at Jaune due to being angry at him for choosing Weiss as his date instead of Pyrrha.
  • Brick Joke: Nora getting stuck in the vending machine was first mentioned as a Noodle Incident in "Victory". Here, Jaune escapes his awkward conversation with Professor Goodwitch by claiming that he thinks he hears Nora getting stuck in the vending machine again.
  • Call-Back: While giving her You Are Better Than You Think You Are speech to Jaune, Pyrrha reminds him how he fought the terentatek to save Cardin's life in "Fear".
  • Commonality Connection: Jaune and Weiss bond over their Parental Issues. Jaune's parents were extremely overbearing and overprotective of him, while Weiss's father was distant and emotionally abusive. Both also turn out to share a love of music which was initially forced on them by their family members. Weiss's father forced her to learn how to dance and sing, but Weiss grew to enjoy it as an expressive outlet. Meanwhile, Jaune was forced to learn to dance by his sisters so he "wouldn't be a complete dork".
  • Continuity Nod: The name of the clothing store that JNPR goes to is Adel Attire, a nod to Coco Adel of team CFVY.
  • The Corrupter: For the first time in the story, Darth Nihilus telepathically communicates with Jaune and encourages him take advantage of a mind controlled Weiss by raping her.
Darth Nihilus: The girl is now yours, take her. Break her. No one else would know.
  • Dance of Romance: Jaune does this with a mind-tricked Weiss at the Beacon Dance.
  • Death Glare: Glynda gives Jaune one in response to his Did I Just Say That Out Loud? moment listed below.
  • Did I Just Say That Out Loud?: Jaune accidentally insults Professor Goodwitch to her face when she offers him dating advice.
Glynda: Jaune, while I know you will have more dances in the upcoming years, you shouldn't take them for granted. You need to ensure that you enjoy your youth, lest it pass you by too quickly and you become an old man with too few happy memories.
Jaune: (muttering) Is that what happened to you?
Glynda: [gives him a Death Glare] I'm sorry, what did you say?
[cue Jaune's Oh, Crap! expression as he realizes he just said that out loud]
  • Disapproving Look: As they leave their dorm for the dance, Nora gives Jaune a disapproving glare because she can tell that Pyrrha is depressed over not being able to be Jaune's date for the dance.
  • Double Take: When Jaune asks Weiss out, he expects for her to reject him. When she was yes (due to being unknowingly mind-tricked), it takes Jaune a moment to realize that she said yes.
"Yes." Weiss flatly replied, her eyes glazed over.
Jaune unintentionally flinched at the expected rejection. Oh well, at least he got it off of his chest. Maybe he could ask Ruby— wait what?
"I beg your pardon?" Jaune dumbly asked.
Weiss resisted the urge to roll her eyes. "I said yes, Jaune."
  • Fictional Counterpart: While shopping for a new Huntsman outfit as well as a suit for the Beacon Dance, Jaune mentions that he's not used to clothing shopping and just buys most of his clothes from Gold Navy, a shout-out to the real-life Old Navy clothing brand.
  • Headphones Equal Isolation: Invoked by Jaune who asks Nora to keep her headphones on so she won't listen in while he tries to ask Ren advice for dating girls.
  • High-School Dance: The Beacon Dance.
  • I Am a Monster: Jaune considers himself to be a monster after he figure out that he accidentally brainwashed Weiss.
  • I Need to Go Iron My Dog: After accidentally insulting Professor Goodwitch to her face, Jaune awkwardly tries to leave the conversation with the excuse that Nora is stuck in the vending machine.
  • Internal Reveal: Jaune finally realizes that he accidentally mind tricked Cardin earlier.
  • Just Smile and Nod: While listening to Jaune talk about how much their friendship means to him, Ren (thinking that Jaune intends to ask him out) gives a strained smile and nods while silently preparing a polite rejection.
  • Mistaken for Gay: When Jaune goes to ask Ren for romantic advice, he walks in on Ren after the latter had just finished taking a shower and was only wearing a towel. He proceeds to drag a half-naked Ren over to his bed before telling him how he feels as though he's formed a close bond with him. Ren misinterprets this as Jaune trying to hit on him before the latter clarifies that he wants advice on dating girls.
  • Mood Dissonance: After coming to the realization that he may have accidentally brainwashed Weiss, Jaune tests this out by asking her to spin around three times and then bark like a dog. Weiss proceeds to do three pirouettes before letting out a cute "Arf!" While most of the dance's attendees either find this confusing or funny, Jaune is absolutely horrified and heartbroken since it confirms his theory that he accidentally mind-tricked Weiss into falling in love with him.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: When Jaune realizes that he accidentally used his powers to mind control Weiss into being his date, he is horrified at himself and runs away while shedding Tears of Remorse from his eyes.
  • Near-Rape Experience: While their date thankfully never gets to that point, Jaune still comes close to unknowingly doing this to Weiss due to not knowing that her feelings of attraction towards him were the result of an accidental mind trick. After he figures out that he accidentally brainwashed Weiss, he has a massive My God, What Have I Done? moment before abruptly breaking off his date with Weiss and running out of the ballroom in shame.
  • No Hero Discount: As Jaune finds out, the clothing store he visits to buy his tuxedo won't give any discounts for student Huntsmen.
  • Not-So-Innocent Whistle: Yang glances to the side and starts whistling when Jaune and Weiss catch her trying to listen in on their conversation.
  • Not That There's Anything Wrong with That: Played with. Following the Mistaken for Gay example listed above, Ren is relieved that Jaune wasn't hitting on him (primarily since Ren has a Single-Target Sexuality for Nora). He then internally clarifies that he has no problem with gay people and believes that people should be able to love who they want to without judgment.
  • Oblivious to Love: Jaune is completely oblivious to Pyrrha's feelings for him and fails to notice her Stepford Smiler act or Nora's not-so-subtle disapproval at him choosing Weiss instead of Pyrrha for his date.
  • Oh, Crap!: Played for Laughs. Jaune reacts this way after realizing he talked back to Professor Goodwitch out loud.
  • Out-of-Character Alert: When Jaune notices how a mind-tricked Weiss is blindly doing everything he asks of her, he realizes that something is seriously wrong since Weiss is normally anything but subservient.
  • Pet the Dog: Again showing that she's not the Stern Teacher she makes herself out as, Glynda takes the extra time out of her day to sit down with Jaune and give him some advice about dating.
  • Powerful and Helpless: Despite all his physical prowess and strong Force powers, Jaune feels completely helpless when he realizes that he accidentally brainwashed Weiss and has no idea how to fix it. He then breaks down into tears and flees the ballroom.
  • Rushed Inverted Reading: When Jaune visits RWBY's dorm and asks Weiss if they can speak in private, Ruby tries to hide that she's eavesdropping by pretending to read a magazine, not realizing that she's holding it upside down.
  • She's Not My Girlfriend: Jaune assumes that Nora and Ren are a couple, hence why he goes to Ren for dating advice and asks him how he got together with Nora. Nora then interrupts to clarify that she and Ren are not "'together' together".
  • Shirtless Scene: While Jaune is asking Ren for dating advice, Ren is shirtless for the entire scene because he just got out of the shower with a towel around his waist.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Although Cardin is only briefly seen boasting to his team at the dance, seeing Cardin causes Jaune to think back to how he made Cardin leave him alone. This leads Jaune to the realization that he had somehow controlled Cardin's mind and was now doing the same thing to Weiss.
  • Stepford Smiler: On the night of the dance, Pyrrha uses a professional smile to hide her depression at not being asked out by Jaune.
  • Tears of Remorse: Jaune breaks down into tears because he's horrified at himself for unknowingly mind controlling Weiss into falling in love with him.
  • Terror Hero: Invoked by the designers of the Valean monk assassin garb, who styled it after a death cult and intended it for stealthy Huntsmen who want to inspire fear and hope.
  • Wham Line: As Jaune internally freaks out after realizing that he accidentally mind controlled Weiss into falling in love with him, he suddenly hears a new voice inside his head:
    Darth Nihilus: Does it matter?
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Pyrrha to Jaune when she tells him to just be honest with Weiss while trying to ask her out.
Pyrrha: Jaune. What happened to the courageous leader who led us during initiation? Or the man who charged head first against that monster to save Cardin? You are brave, honorable, and so many other things, and have more than proven yourself to be worthy of affection. Just tell her the truth.

"Thanks Pyrrha. For everything, for being there for me."
