Initiation

"It is not some great test you require to be what you strive to be. It is only your decision to find the path that matters."
Kreia

Jaune goes through Beacon's initiation process and meets his new team.

Tropes in this chapter include:

  • Adaptational Deviation: Unlike in canon, Jaune doesn't explore the Death Stalker's cave and instead, Nora and Ren are the ones who enter the cavern and encounter the Death Stalker.
  • All Up to You: Pyrrha tells Jaune that only he can catch Weiss using his telekinesis. That isn't entirely true as Pyrrha believes she could use her Polarity to catch Weiss or Weiss could just use her own glyphs. However, Pyrrha sees this as the perfect moment to help Jaune practice using his newfound powers.
  • Being Watched: Jaune admits to Pyrrha that he has the uneasy feeling that someone is secretly watching him, likely sensing the presence of Nihilus' Force ghost.
  • Big Brother Instinct: When Jaune sees a dejected Ruby on the ground after her argument with Weiss, he's reminded of his younger sister Amber who would lie on the ground whenever their parents refused to give her cookies. This leads him to introduce himself to Ruby and offer her a hand to help herself up. He even refers to the feeling as his "big brother instinct".
  • Call-Back: Jaune uses the same lightsaber technique he saw Nihilus use in the previous chapter's flashback to attack the Death Stalker.
  • Detect Evil: The Death Stalker's presence causes Jaune to have a feeling of unease through the Force.
  • Die or Fly:
    • Jaune first unlocks his Force powers when he is catapulted into the Emerald Forest and is terrified that he's going to die. It's at this moment when he first releases a telekinetic blast that cushions his fall.
    • According to Pyrrha, it's not that uncommon for people to unlock their Aura in high-stress situations. Stories of mothers unlocking their Auras to lift cars off their children are said to be an archetypal example of such a scenario.
  • Enemy Rising Behind: After using the Force for the first time to cushion his fall, Jaune has a small panic attack over nearly dying and is so caught up in his thoughts that he doesn't notice a Beowolf sneaking up behind him. Luckily, Pyrrha kills the Grimm with her javelin right before it can attack Jaune.
  • Gosh Darn It to Heck!: Jaune mentally says "Dang it" when Pyrrha interrupts his attempts at flirting with Weiss.
  • Hand Behind Head: Ruby rubs her hand behind her head out of embarassment when Jaune says that he manifested his telekinesis to catch her because he was scared she was going to be hurt.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Even though Jaune and Pyrrha avoid entering the Death Stalker's cave, the scorpion Grimm still ends up attacking the students at the ruins because Nora and Ren entered the cave instead and disturbed its slumber.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: When Nora and Ren come across the Death Stalker's cave, she has this to say:
Nora: Ahh! A cave! What do you think Renny? Do you think there's a secret treasure inside? Maybe the lost artifact of a mysterious, sinister intergalactic cult?
  • Loud Gulp: Jaune loudly gulps after being told that his initiation into Beacon will consist of him fighting Grimm in the Emerald Forest, since he's never actually fought a Grimm before.
  • Malaproper: Jaune refers to his telekinesis as "terrakinesis".
Ruby: Jaune! You saved me? Oh was that your semblance?
Jaune: Wheeze, yeah. Apparently I'm a Terrakinetic.
    Pyrrha: Telekinetic, Jaune.
    Jaune: Yeah, that.
  • Narration Echo: When the narrator says "Jaune wheezed", it is immediately followed by Jaune verbally saying the word "wheeze" out loud.
  • Oh, My Gods!: Jaune says "Oh thank the Brothers" twice. The first time he says it in his head after using his Force powers for the first time to survive his fall and the second time he says it out loud when he sees Weiss rush in and save Ruby from the Death Stalker's stinger.
  • One Dialogue, Two Conversations: As in canon, while explaining Aura to Jaune, Pyrrha asks him if he's ever felt like he was Being Watched. Jaune responds by saying "Yeah… yeah I have." Pyrrha's question was using the context that someone was protectively looking out for him. However, Jaune believed that she was asking if he ever got the feeling that he was being stalked, which he currently was due to being able to sense that Nihilus' ghost was secretly observing him.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted. One of Jaune's younger sisters is named Amber, which happens to be the same name as the Fall Maiden. They are completely separate characters and share no relation beyond coincidentally having the same first name.
  • Quizzical Tilt: Pyrrha tilts her head in confusion when Jaune abruptly shouts out "So that's what it was!" after hearing her explain to him how Aura and Semblances worked. Noticing her confusion, he tells her about how he unlocked his Aura after running into a cave to escape a Beowolf, though leaves out the part about finding the Mask of Nihilus.
  • Saying Sound Effects Out Loud: When Jaune wheezes, he does it by saying the word "wheeze" out loud.
  • Spider-Sense:
    • With his newfound Force abilities, Jaune feels a sense of unease coming from the Death Stalker's cave and decides to look elsewhere for the relic.
    • Jaune has that same sixth feeling just before the Death Stalker attacks RWBY and JNPR at the ruins.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Said verbatim by Weiss when she realizing that Jaune overheard her talking about him the other day but completely misread her dismissal as an attraction.
  • You Remind Me of X: Downplayed. Ruby reminds Jaune of his little sister Amber, although he doesn't tell her that.
