Recap / Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia S 06 E 07 Who Got Dee Pregnant

Go To

Mac: Dee, we don't care about you or your body or your baby or that baby bird that you're probably carrying inside of you.
Dee: Oh, really? Well, you should give a shit, because one of you is the father.

When Dee reveals that she is pregnant and that one of the guys is the father, the gang attempts to recall their last hazy Halloween party with the help of Artemis and the McPoyles in order to figure out who the culprit is.

This episode provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Actor/Role Confusion: Mac's Halloween costume is "that character from Lord of the Rings, Viggio Morgenstein".
Dennis: Okay, that is not the character's name, that's the actor's name. And you're not even getting that right!
  • The Alcoholic: Implied to be the case with Artemis, who claims that she doesn't remember most evenings.
  • A Man Is Always Eager: Mac has sex with Margaret McPoyle simply because she offered.
  • Big Eater: The beginning of the episode has the gang making fun of Dee for eating so much until she clarifies that she's pregnant.
  • Brother–Sister Incest:
    • Played with; the guys come to believe that Dennis is the father of Dee's baby after remembering that she switched costumes with the girl he'd been hitting on all night and dragged him into the back office, believing him to be Charlie. Dennis literally can't stop throwing up after this revelation, but Dee eventually admits that though they did go into the office together, they didn't have sex, and she was lying about one of the guys being the father in order to mess with them.
    • The McPoyle Brothers get a little too excited imagining their sister having sex with Mac, which absolutely disgusts Mac.
    Mac: God, that's your sister!
  • Call-Back: When Dee announces that she's pregnant, Frank immediately responds by telling her to "flush it".
  • Captain Ersatz: Frank goes to the Halloween party as Man-Spider, not Spider-Man.note
  • Clothing Switch: Dennis switches costumes with Charlie and Dee switches costumes with the sexy peacock lady, resulting in them both going into the back office together.
  • Comically Missing the Point:
    • Once Dee reveals none of the guys is the father of her baby, she thinks she can mess with them further by refusing to tell them who it really is. But as the guys explain, they only spent the night trying to figure out the father's identity because she said it was one of them. Now that it's confirmed it isn't, they don't care.
    • Dee is upset that everyone confuses her angel costume with a bird and switches costumes with a woman with a peacock costume, even though it's an actual bird.
  • Continuity Nod:
  • Coordinated Clothes: Discussed; Mac and Dennis were originally supposed to go to the Halloween party in matching costumes as Mario and Luigi, but Mac changed his costume at the last second, leaving Dennis in the lurch.
Dennis: Without my Mario, what am I? I'm just like some weird Italian plumber, I look like an asshole!
  • Delirious Misidentification: The McPoyles reveal that the Waitress was never at the party. Charlie was just so drunk that he mistook a different woman with short blonde hair for her.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: As little as the boys think of Dee, when they believe Dee's been impregnated by Dennis they rush over to her place and try to convince her to go with them to Mexico and get an abortion.
    • The McPoyles are their usual creepy selves, but they're vocally disturbed that Mac punched out some random girl at the party that Charlie had mistaken for the Waitress.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Happens when the McPoyles tell the guys that Dee took Charlie into the back office with her:
Charlie: That wasn't me. I switched costumes with Dennis. That was Dennis.
Frank: (beat) So Dennis thought Deandra was the peacock chick.
Mac: And Dee thought that Dennis was Charlie.
Charlie: So Dee thinks that I'm the dad, but, Dennis, you're the dad!
    Dennis: (sits there mouth agape)
  • For Doom the Bell Tolls: Used when Dennis thinks he's the one who got Dee pregnant.
  • Fridge Horror: The McPoyles believe Dee had sex with Charlie since they saw her pull his Phantom of the Opera-clad self into the backroom. Charlie had switched costumes with Dennis prior to this.
  • Group Costume Fail: During the Gang's Halloween party, Mac ruined his and Dennis' plan to attend as Mario and Luigi by changing his costume at the last minute to "that character from Lord of the Rings, Viggio Morgenstein" without telling Dennis.
  • Halloween Episode: The flashbacks all take place during the gang's last Halloween party as they try to figure out which one of them could be responsible for Dee's pregnancy.
  • It's All About Me:
    • While recounting his memories of the Halloween party, Dennis gets sidetracked and starts trying to piece together whether he banged the peacock lady instead of who was the one who got Dee pregnant.
    • The guys only care about who the father of Dee's baby is when they think it's one of them; when she admits that it isn't, they couldn't give a shit.
  • Lack of Empathy: At the beginning of the episode the guys make repeated fat jokes to Dee knowing full well she's pregnant.
  • Naughty Nuns: Artemis's costume.
  • Oh, Crap!: All four of the guys when Dee claims that one of them is the father.
    • Dennis' story ends with him having sex with the peacock lady. Charlie's story ends with him mentioning he switched costumes with Dennis. The McPoyles' story ends with Dee switching costumes with the peacock lady and then pulling Charlie into the backroom... except Charlie had already switched costumes with Dennis... Dennis, understandably, proceeds to vomit. Repeatedly.
      • Dee, however, reveals they never had sex.
  • Operation: Jealousy: Artemis kisses Charlie at the Halloween party to make Frank jealous.
  • Pop-Cultural Osmosis Failure: Charlie doesn't know what The Phantom of the Opera is, despite being dressed as the Phantom. He assumes the character is some kind of vampire.
  • "Rashomon"-Style: Since the gang were all wasted the night of the Halloween party and only remember bits and pieces of the event, each version of the story varies subtly depending on who's telling it:
    • Dennis's version: After being annoyed that Mac ruined their plan to attend the party as Mario and Luigi, Dennis sees an attractive woman in a peacock costume and flirts with her. Following her rejecting him, Dennis convinces Charlie, dressed as the Phantom of the Opera, to switch costumes with him after the latter starts crying that his is "too sexy" and subsequently manages to charm the peacock lady into sleeping with him. Also, everyone makes fun of Dee for wearing an angel costume with big fluffy wings.
    • Charlie's version: Charlie manages to negotiate a truce with the McPoyles when the Waitress walks in with her new boyfriend in tow. Charlie punches the new guy to "defend her honor", after which the Waitress declares him insanely masculine and makes out with him, so he was crying tears of joy when he ran into Dennis. Also, Dee's costume is now covered in random yellow feathers.
    • Frank's version: Frank is dressed as "Man-Spider" (not Spiderman, as everyone else had said) and fights with Artemis over whether to leave the party. Charlie doesn't attack the Waitress's boyfriend, but gets pushed into him by Mac, and Artemis is the one who kisses Charlie in order to make Frank jealous.
    • Artemis's version: Dee (now covered in even more feathers and a beak and making cawing noises) goes into the men's bathroom when the line for the ladies' is too long, and finds Mac in there washing the blood off his knuckles from the fight. Artemis later hears the what she assumes to be the two of them having sex in there.
    • Mac's version: After heroically punching out the Waitress's douchey boyfriend (who's now about a foot taller), Mac goes to the bathroom to wash the blood off his knuckles and is followed in by Dee, who's now just a live ostrich. After she leaves, Margaret McPoyle comes in, and Mac has sex with her.
    • The McPoyles' version: (Assumed to be true, since they were sober and have no vested interest in the outcome). The entire gang are completely wasted. The woman who Charlie accosts isn't even the Waitress, just someone who looks a bit like her wearing a mask, and Mac accidentally punches her in the face while aiming for her boyfriend, while Artemis kisses Charlie because she's "insanely high on mescaline". After Mac shoos her out of the bathroom, Dee makes the peacock lady switch costumes with her and drags Dennis - who she thinks is Charlie - into the back office to prove that she can be sexy. Later on, Dee reveals that while she did take Dennis into the office, they actually didn't have sex.
  • Running Gag:
    • Charlie bumping fists with the McPoyles, except that this time they're the ones who decline his offer.
    • Mac once again ends up accidentally punching a woman in the face.
  • Serial Escalation: Dee's costume gets more and more birdlike with every retelling of the story, until finally in Mac's version she's replaced with a live ostrich.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Dee admits at the end of the episode that she was lying about one of the guys being the father, meaning that they've all wasted an entire evening trying to remember the events of the Halloween party.
  • Shout-Out: At the beginning of the episode the guys plan to spend a night in the museum in the hopes that some of the exhibits might come to life.
  • Suddenly Shouting: Liam McPoyle does this when Mac refuses to call Margaret.
    Liam: YOU WILL CALL HERRRRRR!!!!
  • Take That!:
Charlie: I'm doing a vampire thing 'cause chicks are all into vampires and stuff, you know, 'cause of the stupid Twilight movie and all that other crap.
  • The Teetotaler: The gang are forced to go the McPoyles to find out what really happened at the party, as they were drinking milk all night and therefore the only ones who weren't wasted.
  • Too Much Information: Frank and Artemis both get derailed into talking about their food-related dumpster sex, much to the collective disgust of everybody else.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: Dennis throws up multiple times offscreen when he thinks he slept with Dee.
  • Who's Your Daddy?: A variation; Dee knows who the father is, but she's not telling, leaving the guys scrambling to figure out which one of them it could be.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Mac drunkenly punches a random woman in the face while trying to back Charlie up in a fight.
