Recap / Hell Girl S 3 E 23 Twilight Hills

Go To

A boy named Fumio Mizuhara, who is constantly bullied by Tomohide Matsuda, because Fumio is born in a rich family while Matsuda is from a poor family. After Tomohide overheard that Fumio is going to high school, he continues to bully him. Fumio access Hell Link to get rid of Matsuda.

Tomohide's younger sister has been asking what their father is like. He sees the Hell brand on his chest. As he continue to bully Fumio, Fumio pulled the string from the doll and send Matsuda to Hell. Matsuda apologizes to his sister that he fails to return home as he was ferried to Hell.

The next day on the final year exams, the teacher may find that Matsuda is missing. Matsuda's friends mentioned that they should blame Hell Girl for sending him to Hell. After finishing the exams, Yuzuki sees all the people she came in contact with and contacted the Hell Link so Ai appears towards Yuzuki once more. After hearing about more victims being sent to hell, Yuzuki confronts Ai. She then reveals Yuzuki's hidden desire: That she wants to send Ai to hell using the Hell Link. Upon hearing this, Yuzuki runs home, unable to face the possibility that she too, has been consumed by the feeling of hate and the desire for vengeance.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Adults Are Useless: Mizuhara's mother and an unnamed teacher are oblivious to the bullying happening a few feet away from them, chalking it up to boys having fun despite the target clearly being intimidated.
  • Asshole Victim: Tomohide, who bullied and attempted to kill an innocent Mizuhara for the crime of being better off than he is.
  • As You Know: Suzumi explains to Tomohide their living situation as she encourages him to go to high school to become a baseball player.
  • The Bully: Tomohide of this episode mercilessly bullies Mizuhara out of envy for his well-off living situation. His unnamed gang of lackeys also count.
  • The Cameo: Several past Hell Girl protagonists and side characters coincidentally pass by Yuzuki while she is walking home. It's implied that all of these characters are going to use the Hell Correspondence again:
    • Yukawa from the episode "Big Brother" passes by, accompanied by some students that are clearly bullying him.
    • Mioi from the episode "Neighbor" is seen walking her dog, now fully healed from her previous injuries.
    • Kaede and Chizuru from the episode "Stray Inari Spirit" pass by, though separately. Kaede has descended further into exploring curses, wearing full black and carrying a voodoo doll.
    • Usagi from the episode "The Rabbit and the Turtle" is seen grocery shopping.
    • Kazuya from the episode "The Goldfish In The Mirror" is seen window shopping.
    • Kokoro from the episode "The Midsummer Chart" is seen walking arm and arm with a different man from Ryū, her boyfriend from that episode, implying they broke up again. However, while she's attentively watching and speaking to this new man, he appears to be paying her no mind.
  • Decoy Protagonist: Mizuhara, who is only the episode's focus up until he contacts the Hell Correspondence. Afterward, the perspective switches to Tomohide, the target of his hatred.
  • Dragged Off to Hell: Tomohide by the end of the episode.
  • Disappeared Dad: Tomohide lies to Suzumi that their father went off somewhere while she was still young. It's ultimately revealed that he banished his father to Hell.
  • Downer Ending: Tomohide forces Mizuhara to banish him to Hell, leaving his family in a state of uncertainty, and Mizuhara, who was innocent of any crime, is doomed to be ferried to Hell after his death as well. Yuzuki has seemingly given up on trying to stop people from sending others to Hell, and Ai reveals that Yuzuki wants to send her to Hell.
  • Driven by Envy: Tomohide bullies Mizuhara because he's envious of the latter coming from a well-off, loving family while his family is poor and struggling to get by.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: Mizuhara could easily pass for a female character if it weren't for his voice and male school uniform.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Even Tomohide's posse is shocked when he attempts to beat Mizuhara with a steel pipe and tries to stop him, but only because Tomohide doing so will get them in trouble.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Tomohide hates Mizuhara for coming from a well-off family and unintentionally flaunting his family's wealth. In contrast, he himself comes from a poor family and has to bring up his younger sister while their mother overworks herself.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: When the perspective of the episode switches from Mizuhara to Tomohide, it's shown that Tomohide isn't the horrible person he's initially set up to be, as he raises up his younger sister while his mother works, plans to quit school and stop pursuing his dream of becoming a baseball player so he can work and support his family, and was planning to return the camera he stole from Mizuhara from him, only to change his mind when he sees Mizuhara with his loving family. He loses all sympathy points when he tries to beat Mizuhara to death with a steel pipe.
  • Spoiled Sweet: Mizuhara comes from a wealthy family and in contrast to Tomohide, who comes from a poor family and allows his envy and hatred to drive him to attempt to murder someone, there's no indication that he's a bad person. His only "crimes" were being well-off, having parents that love and spoil him, and existing in the proximity of the envious Tomohide. As well, when he sends Tomohide to Hell, it's in self-defense.
  • Wham Shot: Tomohide is revealed to have a hell-bound symbol on his chest, meaning he's used the Hell Correspondence before. It's later revealed that he banished his father while Suzumi was still young.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: Tomohide younger sister Suzumi, as her very first scene is her scolding her older brother for running the water too long due to the water bill and for using an excessive amount of dish detergent. Given their living situation, she had to grow up fast alongside her brother in order to survive as their mother is never home to take care of them due to work.
