Recap / Hamster & Gretel S1E38 "Let's Sea What You've Got"

Go To

During their visit at the Lovely Lagoon, Gretel and Bailey decide it to be a great opportunity to try discover new superpowers and experiment with her already established ones. However, one of the experiments leads to an overgrowing infestation of stinking sea moss.

Tropes:

  • An Aesop: Powers should be used responsibly.
  • Bad Boss: Every time Gary calls his boss, Mr. Henderson, the latter doesn't seem to remember him at all even though he hired the lifeguard not long ago.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: After recognizing the giant otter from earlier in the season, Kevin specifies that he meant earlier in the summer, looking at the camera in the process.
  • Brick Joke: While trying to find a parking spot, Kevin asks Hamster if he knows more prose of wisdom after "parking spaces never come to those who whine", to which Hamster responds with "never eat gas station sushi." At the end of the episode, Gretel learns she can taste what others are eating... which in this case turns out to be gas station sushi.
  • The Bus Came Back: The Giant Otter returns to help eat the urchins before the lagoon could be cleaned up.
  • Call-Back: Hamster brings in the Giant Otter from "Cutie and the Beach" to get rid of the final infestation.
  • Doorstopper: Bailey brought an encyclopedia of marine life for "light reading". When she puts down the book, it causes a ground quaking boom.
  • Forgettable Character: When the lifeguard, Gary, calls his superior, Mr. Henderson, about the infestations, said superior can't seem to remember him at all despite hiring him two days prior, much to Gary's frustration. Not helping is that Gary looks rather ordinary and yet the superior guesses appearances of other lifeguards.
  • From Bad to Worse: Gretel heating up the lagoon with her heat vision causes an infestation of malodorous stench moss, and her attempts to fix it leads to an infestation of sea slugs and giant sea urchins.
  • Introduced Species Calamity:
    • Bailey's book on aquatic sea life states that New Zealand spotted sea slugs eat the malodorous stench moss that's infesting the lagoon, so Gretel gets a bucket full of them. Unfortunately, this causes the slugs to reproduce rapidly, leading into an infestation of sea slugs.
    • In response to this second infestation, Bailey consults her book and find out Japanese sea urchins feed on New Zealand spotted sea slugs, as Gretel gets a box full of sea urchins. However, this causes the sea urchins to grow rapidly, leading into a third infestation.
  • Miracle-Gro Monster: Gretel heating up the water causes the malodorous stench moss to grow. The New Zealand spotted sea slugs she brings in to eat the moss also grow slightly and multiply. And then the Japanese frosted sea urchins she brings to deal with the slugs grow to the size of minivans.
  • New Superpower: Discussed when Gretel tells Bailey that the aliens didn't give a list of the powers they were being granted, so she and Hamster occasionally discover new ones. The first half of the episode regards Gretel and Bailey trying to find out what more superpowers Gretel may have. In the end, they discover that Gretel can taste when someone else is eating gas station sushi.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Gretel heating up the water leads to a chain of reactions that get worse every time she and Bailey try to rectify them.
  • Parking Problems: Kevin is stuck finding an empty parking spot for half of the episode. When he finally finds one, he is quickly intercepted by an Action News van, since the beach is already being infested by giant urchin. After he returns with Gretel and Bailey, he finds the minivan being towed away since he left it in the middle of the road.
  • Sea Hurtchin: Gretel brings in Japanese frosted sea urchins to deal with the New Zealand spotted sea slugs, only for the urchins to grow big. She tries to punch one, with predictable results.
  • Shout-Out: When Hamster brings in the giant otter, Kevin recalls how it showed up earlier in the season. Bailey asks what season, and Kevin specifies the season of the year.
