Recap / Hamster & Gretel S1E37 "The Bitter Sitter"

Go To

After Bailey finds out her best friend Gretel is the same person as her superhero Gretel, she is upset that Gretel keeps lying and hiding her secret identity, so she refuses to talk to her. Things are getting awkward when Bailey and Gretel have to be babysat when Dave and Carolina take Kevin to an interactive murder mystery theater with Bailey's parents... with the babysitter being Lauren (who, unbeknownst to Gretel and Bailey, is The Destructress's civilian form).

Tropes:

  • Bad Liar: After Bailey recovered, Gretel tries to tell her that she had a dream where Gretel was a superhero, but to no avail.
  • Black Comedy: The beginning of the episode has a commercial for human shaped popsicles, which have cherry syrup filling. Gretel wanted to get the Hamster and Gretel ones with Bailey when they come out and bite their heads off together.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: After Bailey left the auditorium, you can see a tear coming out of Gretel's eye just before the door closes.
  • Good Pays Better: While Lauren still would do evil as The Destructress, she takes a side gig as babysitter because earning money this way instead of stealing it won't get her and her brother in trouble.
  • Internal Reveal: As of the last episode, Bailey knows about Gretel's secret identity, which is a focal point for this episode. Gretel also learns about The Destructress's civilian identity being the babysitter (though, Lauren doesn't figure out Gretel's double life in return).
  • Lazy Bum: The murder mystery theater is just a ploy of the host to get attendees to pay him money in order to do chores around his house. Kevin sees through it immediately, but appears to be the only one to do so.
  • Lethal Chef: Lauren (The Destructress) burns the heart-shaped cookies and tries to offer them to Gretel and Bailey.
  • Locked in a Freezer: FistPuncher gets locked inside the Human Pops warehouse and has to call Lauren to get him out.
  • Plot-Mandated Friendship Failure: Between Gretel and Bailey when the latter finds out the former is superhero Gretel and becomes upset for lying to her. They patch things up by the end of the episode, after Bailey goes to retrieve a box of Hamster and Gretel Pops stolen by FistPuncher.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Not wanting to be the middleman, Hamster tries to get away, but Bailey blocks his path with her book.
  • Tell Him I'm Not Speaking to Him: Bailey still refuses to speak to Gretel, so she speaks to Hamster instead; poor guy is forced to be the middleman.
  • Villainous Rescue: Lauren pushes Lyle back into the freezer before he could punch Bailey, simultaneously protecting her charge from harm and keeping her brother from getting into more trouble.
  • Would Hurt a Child: FistPuncher seems to have zero qualms about punching a child, even if they have no powers, as he was about to hit Bailey for stealing back the Hamster and Gretel ice pops he was about to destroy. Luckily, The Destructress manages to save her charge before her brother could do her any harm.
