After getting into trouble one too many times, Wei Wuxian is sent back home to Lotus Pier where life is almost perfect for him. Almost.

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: The rest of the Jiang family make their first onscreen appearances here, whereas they first appeared in later flashbacks in the novel.
  • Adaptation Expansion: The scenes of Wei Wuxian returning to Yunmeng and the glimpse of the Jiang family's life is original to the adaptation, giving more exposure to the Jiangs' dynamic with each other and Wei Wuxian.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: When Jiang Fengmian argues to Yu Ziyuan that their daughter shouldn't be in a loveless marriage for their families' sake, she questions if he means a marriage just like theirs. He's too stunned to give an immediate reply.
Jiang Fengmian: If they don't love each other and are forced to be together just to further their families' interests...
    Yu Ziyuan: Just like us?
  • Awful Wedded Life: The episode shows that Jiang Cheng's parents have a very strained marriage where they always argue about their family (and Wei Wuxian) and are rarely on good terms.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: The episode shows that one would do well not to insult Wei Wuxian's martial siblings lest they want to get their faces bashed in, which Jin Zixuan experiences firsthand after insulting Jiang Yanli (directly) and Jiang Cheng (indirectly).
  • Big Brother Instinct: An inverted example with Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng being the younger and protective martial/blood brothers. When Jin Zixuan states that his fiancee isn't worth mentioning, the two immediately approach him and asks what he means by that. When he makes disparaging remarks about Jiang Yanli, Wei Wuxian doesn't hesitate to clobber him, and Jiang Cheng's reaction makes it clear that he would have done the same thing had the other not acted first.
  • Breather Episode: Downplayed. While there's still some drama as shown through the conflicts of the Jiang family, the episode takes a short break from all the cultivation business and stress that comes with it.
  • Cool Big Sis: Jiang Yanli is shown to a sweet and likeable older sister figure to Wei Wuxian and is an overall Nice Girl. Her kindness makes it easy to understand why the latter was more than willing to start a fight to defend her honor, and why she's the only one who can calm anyone in the family should tensions arise.
  • Easily Forgiven: Jiang Yanli doesn't hold it against Wei Wuxian for ending her engagement to Jin Zixuan, stating that if they don't mutually agree to the marriage then it's better that they do not wed.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: Jiang Yanli sounds nervous when she tells her father where her mother is. A few seconds later said mother turns out to be Drill Sergeant Nasty with a horrible temper towards even her family.
  • Hope Spot: When Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan discuss about what to do regarding their daughter's Arranged Marriage, the conversation is slightly tense but mostly civil, which is rare for them. But then Jiang Fengmian argues that he wouldn't want their child to enter a loveless marriage, which Yu Ziyuan takes as a dig at their own marriage... and their talk immediately devolves into another argument.
  • Informed Deformity: Jiang Yanli is widely gossiped about as being rather plain. Thanks to Generic Cuteness, she turns out to be lovely and beautiful when she finally appears onscreen.
  • Man Hug: Wei Wuxian glomps the junior Jiang disciples after reuniting with them, tacking them to the ground as a result.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Wei Wuxian feels guilty when he sees that his actions caused Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan to have another big fight.
  • Not So Above It All: Jiang Cheng briefly breaks from his no-nonsense demeanour to let out a smile after Wei Wuxian greets him by Playing Possum, though he pretends to not be amused.
  • Oh, Crap!: The pheasant Wei Wuxian hunts looks shocked right before it gets a rock to the head.
  • Parental Favoritism: Yu Ziyuan accuses Jiang Fengmian of coddling Wei Wuxian who he treats like his own children, even stating that he wouldn't have been as nurturing towards Jiang Cheng.
  • Parents as People: Both leaders of the Yunmeng Jiang Clan prove that, no matter how much they care for their children, they're not doing a perfect job at parenting.
    • Jiang Fengmian is a mild-mannered man who cares for his children and is also a kind father figure to Wei Wuxian. However, he's accused of failing to be the same loving father to his own biological son, allegedly because he's in an unwanted Arranged Marriage with a woman whom he tries to make his relationship with work... except that they keep on clashing because of their different opinions on Wei Wuxian.
    • Yu Ziyuan is a powerful woman who is strict and no-nonsense, but is shown to sincerely love her children. However she's too upset about the dissolved Arranged Marriage to care that her daughter would had married someone who doesn't love her, and she'd rather blame any problems with her children on Wei Wuxian instead of taking responsibility.
  • Playing Possum: As part of his prank, Wei Wuxian floats on the water like a corpse when Jiang Cheng returns from Gusu.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: After hearing about the scuffle between Wei Wuxian and Jin Zixuan and the reason behind it, Jiang Fengmian has the Arranged Marriage between Jiang Yanli and the latter dissolved since he doesn't want his daughter to marry someone who doesn't even like her. It not only shows him being a Papa Wolf but also that he's willing to break up an unhappy political marriage arrangement even if it's meant to benefit his clan.
  • Sneeze Cut: As Wei Wuxian tells Jiang Yanli that she deserves someone better than Jin Zixuan, the scene segues to the very latter sneezing in his room.
  • Time Skip: After Wei Wuxian and Jiang Yanli's conversation about marriage, the story moves forward by a year.
  • The Unfavorite: Both Jin Zixuan and Yu Ziyuan insinuate that Jiang Cheng is the least appreciated child in the family (Wei Wuxian included). It's implied their accusations aren't baseless — after Wei Wuxian gets kicked out of the study program for getting into another brawl, Jiang Fengmian arrives at Gusu as soon as possible to pick him up and warmly greets him, but he doesn't so much as acknowledge Jiang Cheng.
  • Unishment: As punishment for starting a fistfight, Wei Wuxian is forced to kneel in repentance. Since he's unsupervised while kneeling, he manages to keep himself entertained by digging out the ant hills in the ground.
