As always, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji continue to not get along. If that wasn't enough trouble for them, some corpses escape confinement at a time when both are without their weapons and within the corpses' line of sight.
- Adaptational Backstory Change: This episode adds in a detail to the novel's backstory of the rabbits given to Lan Wangji that were seen in Episode 2. While it's not specified where Wei Wuxian got the rabbits from in the novel, here he saves one of them from a group of fierce corpses and catches another the next day (so that the first one would have some company) before giving them both to Lan Wangji.
- Adaptation Distillation:
- In the novel not only was Wei Wuxian caught sneaking in with alcohol, but he and many of the other guest disciples (Jiang Cheng and Nie Huaisang included) were also caught the next morning with hangovers after a night of messing around and various other rule-breaking. To speed things up, the episode focuses on just Wei Wuxian getting into trouble with Lan Wangji and the two receiving their punishments.
- The scene of Wei Wuxian giving two rabbits to Lan Wangji reduced to The Stinger, with the part where they notice that both rabbits are male being omitted.
- Adaptation Expansion: The episode adds a minor subplot after the Cold Springs scene where some captured corpses are let loose, prompting the protagonists to take action. The addition both shows off Lan Wangji's guqin skills and provides more hints to the Foregone Conclusion of Wei Wuxian taking up demonic cultivation.
- Battle in the Rain: The episode begins with Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji fighting during a rainy evening.
- Bathtub Bonding: Attempted by Wei Wuxian with Lan Wangji. He joins the latter in the Cold Springs to recover from his injuries and tries to socialize with him, but an irritated Lan Wangji repeatedly rejects him.
- Big Damn Heroes: Lan Wangji saves both Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng in dramatic fashion when they're nearly overwhelmed by the corpses.
- Call-Forward: The Stinger where Wei Wuxian gives Lan Wangji a pair of rabbits as a gift explains the presence of rabbits in the Cloud Recesses in Episode 2.
- Clark Kent Outfit: As the scene of the protagonists bathing in the Cold Springs shows, their robes do a good job hiding just how ripped they actually are.
- Continuity Nod: Jiang Cheng angrily warns Wei Wuxian that the cultivation world will brand him a dead man if he's caught using demonic cultivation, almost echoing what Lan Qiren told Wei Wuxian in Episode 3.
- The Corruption: Attempted by the resentful energy Wei Wuxian encounters. It almost turns him into a feral zombie, attempting to overtake him and power him up.
- Honor Before Reason: Lan Wangji insists on turning in both himself and Wei Wuxian for sneaking out and takes his punishment alongside the latter... despite that fact that the only reason he was outside the compound was because Wei Wuxian pushed him out.
- Luminescent Blush: Downplayed. Lan Wangji's ears turn red out of embarrassment and irritation when Wei Wuxian teasingly compliments his physique.
- My God, What Have I Done?: After nearly succumbing to the effects of The Corruption from resentful energy, Wei Wuxian is so horrified that he meekly accepts Jiang Cheng's outburst at him before sincerely promising the latter that he won't practice demonic cultivation again (although it's a Foregone Conclusion that the promise doesn't last).
- Oh, Crap!: While initially nonchalant about his predicament, Wei Wuxian begins to panic when he sees that Lan Wangji is also willing to be punished for breaking the rules.
- Principles Zealot: As per his usual self, Lan Wangji confronts Wei Wuxian over sneaking in and out at night with alcohol and holds him at swordpoint. This time he's even more determined to have Wei Wuxian face punishment, and even willingly turns himself in even though the only reason he was outside the Cloud Recesses premises was because he was pushed out.
- The Stinger: After the ending credits, Wei Wuxian gives Lan Wangji a pair of rabbits. The latter initially refuses but changes his mind after the former jokingly contemplates eating them. He's later disgusted when the two rabbits attempt to mate.
