  • Absurd Phobia: Though Rory has never been established as a sleep-walker, Paris fears that by living in the pool house she'll sleepwalk into the pool and drown.
  • Brick Joke: Lorelai proposed to Luke.
  • Call-Back: Emily tells Rory the code to her panic room.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: Lorelai considers her parents to suffer from this disorder. That's how she can be so calm about it.
  • Comically Missing the Point:
    • Lorelai thinks Luke changed his mind about marrying her when all he meant was that he didn't have alcohol.
    • Emily stopping Richard from figuratively killing Charlie. They're in a courthouse after all.
  • Compliment Backfire: Subverted. Richard says of Charlie that if Rory knew how many criminals he had gotten back on the street, she would never believe in the criminal justice system again.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: Paris assumes Rory is pregnant when she tells her she's dropping out.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Logan figures it won't take Rory long to end up back at Yale.
    • In season 8, we learn that Logan is right. Rory doesn't do too well outside of school.
  • Gossipy Hens: Babette and Miss Patty are annoyed with East Side Tilly getting all the juice on Lorelai's life first.
  • Literal-Minded: Luke anticipates this for Kirk, making sure he means the rings are real diamonds, not real in the sense that they exist.
  • Product Placement: Zima
  • Running Joke: Paris still doesn't recognize Luke.
  • Sarcasm Mode: How Michel deals with Emily.
  • Shout-Out
    • Lorelai wants celebrate by hittin Funky Town, a song by Lipps Inc.
    • Taylor thought it was more likely that all four Beatles reunited than for Lorelai and Luke to get engaged.
    • Dylan Thomas came through town and drank all the alcohol except a box of Zima.
    • The town troubador sings Pre-owned Heart by Alexa Rose.
    • Star Trek also has intercom, like the Gilmore house.
    • Richard's lawyer handled a defamation suit involving Ellen Degeneres.
    • Paris feels like Doyle's family are Oompa-loompas.
    • Paris offer Rory to live with her and Doyle. Rory points out that it's very Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, minus Bob.
    • The woman who used to own Lorelai's engagement ring thought she was Frida Kahlo near the end.
    • Paris thinks Logan is a Christopher Atkins wannabe and the reason Rory blue lagoons it out of Yale.
    • Rory is Paris's Björn Borg, and Paris feels she needs her to compete against to be at the top of her game.
    • Finn went to Spain to study Miguel de Cervantes.
    • One of the girls at the party stayed home for a month after she got apocalyptic highlights that made her look like a Tim Burton character.
    • Michel is made to answer doors, like Benson.
    • Richard comments on Lorelai feeling that she's been conned. Lorelai says it's only a Paper Moon.
  • Stealth Insult: Taylor asks Lorelai if she feels the need to be drunk to be with Luke.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: Luke and Paris separately come up with the same ideas for getting Rory back to Yale.
  • Surrender Backfire: Rory's guilty plea backfires and her twenty hours of community service turn into 300.
  • Teen Pregnancy: Lorelai argues that Rory needs to make this mistake, just as Lorelai had to go through that one.
  • Themed Party: Logan and his friends throw Rory a prison-themed party.
  • Threat Backfire: Discussed. Paris says she'll hold Lorelai to her promise to talk to her. Lorelai responds that it's not a threat if they're offering it to you.
  • Too Much Information: Subverted with Babette's story about how Morey proposed, since she forgot to mention that they were playing Twister.
  • Wacky Marriage Proposal: While the craziest thing about the proposal itself was that Lorelai proposed and Luke, while taken aback, accepted without protesting his masculinity, Lorelai insists they do something "Funkytown" to celebrate.
