Recap / Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends S6E10 "Goodbye to Bloo"

Go To

The tenth episode of the sixth season of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, as well as the Series Finale.

When Bloo overhears from Mr. Herriman that Mac is moving out of his old apartment, he thinks that Mac is going to move away and that he'll end up getting adopted. He and his friends set out to make Mac's last day at Foster's the greatest he's ever had.

This episode contains tropes of:

  • Bait-and-Switch: The opening has Mac not show up at Foster's, and a family arrive to adopt a new imaginary friend. On their way to Bloo's bedroom, Mr. Herriman informs the family that a new imaginary friend had recently been put up for adoption, this one being short, blue, round, and having no nose. As Mac had made a deal with Madame Foster that Bloo wouldn't get adopted as long as he visited him every day, Bloo begins to accept his fate. As it turned out, the family had adopted a new imaginary friend named No-Nose Ned instead. Bloo is still safe because Mac had earlier phoned Mr. Herriman telling him that he had some important business to attend to and wouldn't be able to go to Foster's, so Mr. Herriman allowed it.
  • Big "NO!": Let out by everybody at the very end of the episode (and series) when Cheese announces he is moving into Foster's because Louise's new home does not allow imaginary friends.
  • Bittersweet Ending: More of a Happy Ending, with Mac moving to the house next door from Foster's, but Cheese is moving into The House, much to everyone's horror. Out of universe, we have the gutwrenching last few seconds of the episode, as the theme plays in reverse and the house is erased out of existence, like the series itself is saying goodbye. It's common for people who grew up with the series to admit that it made them cry.
  • Bookends: The opening intro to the series starts with the world of Foster's being drawn out in pencil line-art until it changes to color with a calliope theme in the background. At the end of the episode, the world of Foster's is essentially un-drawn and the calliope theme plays backwards.
  • Black Comedy Burst: What's Bloo's first idea to prevent Mac from moving away? To kill him.
  • Continuity Cavalcade: The episode has plenty of this
    • Bloo references the events of House of Bloo's and The Bet Mac made with Madame Foster that Bloo wouldn't get adopted as long as he visited him every day.
    • Throughout the episode, the background is full of occasionally-seen objects like the secret door the Scribbles used to be in, the door to the room the imaginary fleas stay in, and the Extremosaur pen.
  • Finale Credits: The end credits ditch the animated stinger in favor of a tearjerking doodle of Mac and Bloo walking into the sunset, along with a message by McCracken and Faust reading "Thanks for watching."
  • Graceful Loser: After Herriman comes to his room, Bloo accepts being adopted with grace and says his goodbyes to his friends, until its revealed he wasn't going to be adopted.
  • Grand Finale: This or Destination: Imagination, depending on your views. With this episode essentially brings up the point that started the series in the first place — Mac having to say goodbye to Bloo for good. Through classic shenanigans, it becomes a huge misunderstanding that Mac and family will move away and leave Bloo up for adoption. In the end, it's strongly disproved... and Cheese ends up being sent to live at Foster's, followed by a thank you note to the viewers in the credits.
  • Jumping the Shark: Bloo thinks Mac is moving away forever and tries to come up with something big they can do for their last day together. After Mac shoots down several of his suggestions as things they have already done before (all of them references to the plots of previous episodes), Bloo decides that the only thing left to do is to Jump the Shark. Unable to find a shark in time, he settles for walking over a fishbowl containing a fish with a paper fin.
  • Moving-Away Ending: Bloo thinks that his owner Mac is moving away from his neighborhood when he finds out from Mr. Herriman that he is moving out of his old apartment. Since Mac made a deal with Madame Foster that Bloo won't get adopted by someone else as long as he visited him every day, Bloo is worried that he will get adopted once Mac moves away. Bloo tries unsuccessfully to convince Mac to stay by listing things they can do, all of which were the plots of previous episodes. Unfortunately for Bloo, Mac tells him they've done all those things already. In the end, Mac has some good news and some bad news; the good news is, he's only moving into his neighbor Louise's apartment since his Mom got a promotion at work and she needs a bigger office space. The bad news is, Louise is moving somewhere that doesn't allow imaginary friends, so Cheese is going to live at Foster's with the other imaginary friends, much to their horror.
  • The Moving Experience: The focus of the final episode is that Mac is believed to be moving, which could jeopardize Bloo's immunity to being adopted by a new kid.
  • Poor Communication Kills: The entire episode could've been completely avoid or done way differently had Mr. Herriman explained to Bloo Mac was only moving into a next door apartment.
  • Series Finale: In airing order.
